DESCRIPTION:This new screen adaptation of the Dumas novel premiered at last year’s Festival de Cannes. The critics liked it: The New York Times called it “stirringly acted and gorgeously filmed” and said “this swashbuckler leaves previous versions of Dumas’s famous revenge saga in the dust”. The Guardian rated it 4/5\, noting it was “directed with verve and acted with gusto”. It certainly rocks along: the original novel is a sprawling episodic adventure\, and somehow this version manages to make it feel pacy and engaging. The story in brief:  Edmond Dantès\, a young sailor betrayed and falsely imprisoned on the day of his wedding\, is jailed for years in the Château d’If where a fellow prisoner reveals the truth behind his downfall. He learns of a fortune that he can access\, escapes from the island fortress in a classically unlikely fashion\, establishes a new identity\, and proceeds to tack down those who destroyed his life in a powerful story of justice\, transformation\, and revenge … \nIn French with English subtitles. SUMMARY:Young Picasso: dir Phil Grabsky (2019)
DESCRIPTION:Documentarist Phil Grabsky has carved a niche for himself by concentrating for the most part on films about artists – composers first\, then more recently painters; Young Picasso is both typical of this work and one the best examples of it. The film looks at the early period in the artist’s life from his birth in Málaga in 1881 to the shocked reactions to Les Demoiselles d’Avignon\, painted in 1907 when he was just 25. It’s true that even greater shocks lay ahead for the art world\, with increasingly innovative and stylised work\, but the art of Picasso’s youth – ranging from childhood paintings through the Blue Period (1901-1904) to the Rose Period (1904 -1906) and Les Demoiselles – are a fascinating story of how he got there from here. \nIn Young Picasso\, a number of curators comment on Picasso’s development\, along with his grandson Olivier Widmaier Picasso; we also here the words of Picasso himself and others responding to his art. Grabsky lets modern-day shots indicate the atmosphere of the important locations of his development\, Málaga\, Barcelona and Paris; but the past is captured vividly enough\, not least through the tragic end of his friend Carlos Casagema and the influence of his mistress Fernande Olivier. Grabsky delivers all of this in a well-judged and unforced approach. There’s nothing here in the way of revelations or shocks; what you do get is a consistently reliable\, intelligent and highly watchable introduction to Picasso. Recommended. \n

SUMMARY:Le mystère Picasso | The Mystery of Picasso: dir Henri-Georges Clouzot (1956)
DESCRIPTION:One of the best films about Picasso\, a documentary that captures his creative process by using novel filming techniques. The artist produced around 20 drawings and paintings specifically for the film\, using inks and paints that bled through the paper\, with a camera mounted at the back of the easel to capture the act of creation in real time. In the edit Clouzot employed a kind of stop-motion effect to speed up the process and depict the development of the works. \nThis should be a great accompaniment to the current Louvre show. It’s free\, but you will have to buy a museum general admission ticket.

DESCRIPTION:The fifth edition of the Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here exhibition\, featuring six artworks by seven artists shortlisted for the Richard Mille Art Prize\, has been curated by guest curator Sophie Mayuko Arni under the theme Shadows – “exploring the interplay between light and absence\, visibility and concealment\, and the layered dimensions of memory\, identity\, and transformation”. \nThis year’s edition invited proposals from artists based in the GCC and Japan\, along with artists from the MENA region with a GCC connection. There were more than 400 submissions\, from which six were shortlisted for the Richard Mille Art Prize; the winner will be announced in December. \nThe exhibits: \nI remember a light: sculpture by Palestinian architect\, artist\, and researcher Ahmed Alaqra that reimagines shadows as urban traces\, referencing the traditional mashrabiya lattice screen. Made of stacked acrylic cubes containing 3D-printed shapes from shadow photographs of Sharjah\, the sculpture transforms fleeting encounters of light and architecture into enduring sculptural artifacts. \nEcho: an interactive light installation by Emirati artist and musician Jumairy. Visitors encounter a still water pond\, a single flower\, and ambient sound; reimagining the myth of Echo and Narcissus\, the work uses light and shadow to transform absence into intimacy and invite a deeper encounter with memory and the unconscious. \nskadw: an immersive audiovisual installation of light\, fog\, and sound by Japanese artist Ryoichi Kurokawa. Shadows are transformed into sculptural form; a single beam cuts through shifting mist\, creating ever-changing patterns of shadow and resonance. Inspired by the Japanese concept of Ma\, the beauty of negative space\, the work invites viewers into a meditative environment where absence becomes presence. \nTree Studies: the Kuwaiti-Pakistani artist Hamra Abbas has an installation of 31 stone inlay sculptures inspired by trees found in Pakistan and in the UAE\, including olive\, pomegranate\, and cherry. Using her distinctive lapis-on-lapis technique to create shadow-like foliage\, the works balance realism and abstraction. \nA Sundial for the Night Without End: a sculptural sundial conceived for a world after the sun by Japanese artist Rintaro Fuse. Formed from polished stainless steel\, the work reflects its surroundings while aligning three gnomons to past\, present\, and future North Stars. Installed beneath the museum’s dome\, it transforms cosmic time into a meditation on memory\, absence\, and the persistence of eternity. \nDancing shadows: a pavilion of swaying stainless-steel mesh\, inspired by traditional Kawachi weaving. Supported by slender columns\, the structure creates shifting patterns of shadow and light. Using recycled industrial material\, the architect duo YOKOMAE et BOUAYAD (Takuma Yokomae from Japan and Ghali Bouayad from Morocco) have created an installation that blends Tokyo and Marrakesh design traditions\, offering a poetic space where architecture moves like nature.

DESCRIPTION:The fifth edition of the Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here exhibition\, featuring six artworks by seven artists shortlisted for the Richard Mille Art Prize\, has been curated by guest curator Sophie Mayuko Arni under the theme Shadows – “exploring the interplay between light and absence\, visibility and concealment\, and the layered dimensions of memory\, identity\, and transformation”. \nThis year’s edition invited proposals from artists based in the GCC and Japan\, along with artists from the MENA region with a GCC connection. There were more than 400 submissions\, from which six were shortlisted for the Richard Mille Art Prize; the winner will be announced in December. \nThe exhibits: \nI remember a light: sculpture by Palestinian architect\, artist\, and researcher Ahmed Alaqra that reimagines shadows as urban traces\, referencing the traditional mashrabiya lattice screen. Made of stacked acrylic cubes containing 3D-printed shapes from shadow photographs of Sharjah\, the sculpture transforms fleeting encounters of light and architecture into enduring sculptural artifacts. \nEcho: an interactive light installation by Emirati artist and musician Jumairy. Visitors encounter a still water pond\, a single flower\, and ambient sound; reimagining the myth of Echo and Narcissus\, the work uses light and shadow to transform absence into intimacy and invite a deeper encounter with memory and the unconscious. \nskadw: an immersive audiovisual installation of light\, fog\, and sound by Japanese artist Ryoichi Kurokawa. Shadows are transformed into sculptural form; a single beam cuts through shifting mist\, creating ever-changing patterns of shadow and resonance. Inspired by the Japanese concept of Ma\, the beauty of negative space\, the work invites viewers into a meditative environment where absence becomes presence. \nTree Studies: the Kuwaiti-Pakistani artist Hamra Abbas has an installation of 31 stone inlay sculptures inspired by trees found in Pakistan and in the UAE\, including olive\, pomegranate\, and cherry. Using her distinctive lapis-on-lapis technique to create shadow-like foliage\, the works balance realism and abstraction. \nA Sundial for the Night Without End: a sculptural sundial conceived for a world after the sun by Japanese artist Rintaro Fuse. Formed from polished stainless steel\, the work reflects its surroundings while aligning three gnomons to past\, present\, and future North Stars. Installed beneath the museum’s dome\, it transforms cosmic time into a meditation on memory\, absence\, and the persistence of eternity. \nDancing shadows: a pavilion of swaying stainless-steel mesh\, inspired by traditional Kawachi weaving. Supported by slender columns\, the structure creates shifting patterns of shadow and light. Using recycled industrial material\, the architect duo YOKOMAE et BOUAYAD (Takuma Yokomae from Japan and Ghali Bouayad from Morocco) have created an installation that blends Tokyo and Marrakesh design traditions\, offering a poetic space where architecture moves like nature. \nTo 28 December.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibition on the rich heritage of the Mamluk Sultanate\, a dynasty that ruled a vast expanse of territory encompassing the most significant Islamic holy sites for more than 250 years (1250–1517)\, with more than 270 works  gatheredfrom 34 museums and cultural institutions in 13 countries – including objects of art\, glasswork\, metalwork\, ceramics\, textiles\, coinage\, manuscripts and more. DESCRIPTION:Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Art Here 2024\, now in its fourth edition\, has rapidly become a significant entry in the Middle East’s art exhibition calendar – a regional competition for 3D work that benefits from sponsorship by luxe watchmaker Richard Mille to the extent that at the end of the exhibition one of the five artists shown will get a not insignificant $60\,000 cash award as part of the Richard Mille Art Prize. \nThis year\, Louvre Abu Dhabi and guest curator Simon Njami invited responses to the theme ‘Awakenings’; the selected artists are tasked with translating the concept of openness into visual forms via sculptures or audiovisual installations “that address questions of today and the near future”. \nThere were 230 submissions in total\, and five have been selected for the exhibition. The competition this year has been expanded to include North Africa alongside the GCC\, and three of the shortlist came from outside the Gulf. Franco-Tunisian artist Férielle Doulain-Zouari explores the coexistence of natural and artificial worlds via installations\, sculptures\, and weaving. Moataz Nasr from Egypt investigates the geopolitics and social development of Egypt and Africa\, testing the notion of identity and belonging in a world of globalisation. And Nicène Kossentini (Tunisia) uses video to capture the slow transformation of people and things\, revealing intimate places and bodies and uncovering the buried truths of her heritage. \nThe other two on the shortlist will probably be more familiar to local arty audiences – Lamya Gargash (Dubai) and Sarah Almehairi (Abu Dhabi). Gargash usually works in film and photography to document the essence of inhabited and abandoned spaces\, delving into cultural heritage amidst rapid modernisation\, and capturing the beauty of human trace and the value of the mundane – “my desire for seclusion\, and my grieving for our inevitable fate\, has led me to find beauty in ordinary things and bring to life these reticent moments in time …” She’s a Third Line artist and has had several shows there\, including one of our favourites. \nSarah Almehairi has worked in various media – sculpture\, painting\, book art\, fibre art\, photography\, poetry – to explore themes of identity\, language\, materiality and memory. Now signed with Carbon 12\, she was part of the 2019 Youth Takeover at Jameel Arts Centre\, was one of Abu Dhabi Art’s 2022 Beyond: Emerging Artists (a group which also went to Cromwell Place the following year)\, and was commissioned for Alserkal Avenue’s public art projects in 2022 for Alserkal Art Week – she transformed the passages alongside Concrete into a rather good visual poem with her work don’t overlook the weather (as your thoughts collect)\, asking visitors to linger and observe both the earth and the sky as they passed through. \n

DESCRIPTION:Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Art Here 2024\, now in its fourth edition\, has rapidly become a significant entry in the Middle East’s art exhibition calendar – a regional competition for 3D work that benefits from sponsorship by luxe watchmaker Richard Mille to the extent that at the end of the exhibition one of the five artists shown will get a not insignificant $60\,000 cash award as part of the Richard Mille Art Prize. \nThis year\, Louvre Abu Dhabi and guest curator Simon Njami invited responses to the theme ‘Awakenings’; the selected artists are tasked with translating the concept of openness into visual forms via sculptures or audiovisual installations “that address questions of today and the near future”. The resulting artworks will be shown at the museum from 20 September to 15 December. \nThere were 230 submissions in total\, and five have been selected for the exhibition. The competition this year has been expanded to include North Africa alongside the GCC\, and three of the shortlist came from outside the Gulf. Franco-Tunisian artist Férielle Doulain-Zouari explores the coexistence of natural and artificial worlds via installations\, sculptures\, and weaving. Moataz Nasr from Egypt investigates the geopolitics and social development of Egypt and Africa\, testing the notion of identity and belonging in a world of globalisation. And Nicène Kossentini (Tunisia) uses video to capture the slow transformation of people and things\, revealing intimate places and bodies and uncovering the buried truths of her heritage. \nThe other two on the shortlist will probably be more familiar to local arty audiences – Lamya Gargash (Dubai) and Sarah Almehairi (Abu Dhabi). Gargash usually works in film and photography to document the essence of inhabited and abandoned spaces\, delving into cultural heritage amidst rapid modernisation\, and capturing the beauty of human trace and the value of the mundane – “my desire for seclusion\, and my grieving for our inevitable fate\, has led me to find beauty in ordinary things and bring to life these reticent moments in time …” She’s a Third Line artist and has had several shows there\, including one of our favourites. \nSarah Almehairi has worked in various media – sculpture\, painting\, book art\, fibre art\, photography\, poetry – to explore themes of identity\, language\, materiality and memory. Now signed with Carbon 12\, she was part of the 2019 Youth Takeover at Jameel Arts Centre\, was one of Abu Dhabi Art’s 2022 Beyond: Emerging Artists (a group which also went to Cromwell Place the following year)\, and was commissioned for Alserkal Avenue’s public art projects in 2022 for Alserkal Art Week – she transformed the passages alongside Concrete into a rather good visual poem with her work don’t overlook the weather (as your thoughts collect)\, asking visitors to linger and observe both the earth and the sky as they passed through. \nThe Art Here 2024 exhibition take place under Louvre Abu Dhabi’s iconic dome\, including the courtyard with the Damascene fountain and extending via a passageway towards a meditative shallow pool and the Jenny Holzer wall installation. \n

It’s divided into three main sections – Travelling Tales\, Telling Stories\, and The Fables Today – with more than 132 artworks on display\, an eclectic collection of rare manuscripts\, paintings\, contemporary works\, and more pieces from France\, Saudi Arabia\, and the Emirates. \nCurated by Annie Vernay-Nouri\, Former Chief Curator\, Oriental Manuscripts Department\, Bibliothèque nationale de France\, the exhibition is held in partnership with Bibliothèque nationale de France and France Muséums and is supported by Van Cleef & Arpels. \nThe exhibition traces the origins of the genre in India and Greece\, following its evolution through the contributions of two key figures: Aesop in the Greco-Roman world and Ibn al-Muqaffa in the Arab-Islamic world. Says curator Annie Vernay-Nouri: “For the first time\, visitors have a unique opportunity to witness and compare rare and precious artworks representing three distinct traditions of fables. The Eastern and Western traditions\, rooted in a shared universal heritage\, have evolved independently without direct contact\, each charting its own course. It is only through the works of the eminent fabulist Jean de La Fontaine that these traditions have finally converged and united in a singular collection showcased at Louvre Abu Dhabi.”

It is only through the works of the eminent fabulist Jean de La Fontaine that these traditions have finally converged and united in a singular collection showcased at Louvre Abu Dhabi.” \nNotable loans from Louvre Abu Dhabi’s partners include one of the oldest illustrated manuscripts of Ibn al-Muqaffa’s Kalīla wa Dimna from the Ayyubid dynasty (1171-1250 CE); ‘The Two Adventurers and the Wondrous Writ’ illustrated by the noted French Rococo painter\, tapestry designer\, and illustrator Jean-Baptiste Oudry with engraving by Bonaventure Louis Prévost; an engraving of Emile Bayard’s nineteenth century Portrait of Jean de La Fontaine; and La Fontaine composant ses fables by François Vayron\, engraver. \nFor the first time Louvre Abu Dhabi is utilising artificial intelligence within the mediation devices for this exhibition\, allowing visitors to create their own fable by selecting characters and a moral\, which they can download by scanning a QR code. Visitors can customise their fables.
