SUMMARY:Douglas White: The Great Wave
DESCRIPTION:Throughout his practice\, White approaches sculpture as a kind of material alchemy – discarded substances are reworked forms that appear uncannily animate: industrial debris becomes wave\, tree\, or cosmic surface\, revealing unexpected continuities between natural forces and technological systems. \nTwo sculptures form the centre of the exhibition. In The Great Wave (after Hokusai)\, fragments of torn tyre rubber collected from roadsides around the world gather into a dense\, turbulent crest that rises above the viewer – one of the most recognisable images in art history\, understood as a moment of impending force poised above fragile human lives. And the monumental Black Palm rises through the gallery like an improbable organism\, assembled from lengths of discarded tyre rubber\, its trunk and fronds have presence of a living structure – an artificial tree grown from the residues of global mobility. \nAcross the exhibition White’s works reveal the hidden energies that shape material form. In the Lichtenberg Drawings\, high-voltage electrical discharges burn branching patterns directly into the surface of wood\, creating lightning-like structures that emerge through the interaction of energy and resistance. And the electroformed Black Sun works develop slowly through the accumulation of copper in electrically charged baths\, allowing metallic surfaces to crystallise over time. \nTo 6 May.

SUMMARY:Bahar Sabzevari: Ancestral Algorithms
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in Indo-Persian mythology\, Ancestral Algorithms feature a series of drawings\, paintings\, and sculptural works that merge organic and mechanical forms to reimagine the legendary Talking Tree (Derakht-e Sokhangoo) – a mythical being that could speak\, listen\, and connect the human\, animal\, and spiritual realms. Sabzevari reinterprets this ancient symbol through the lens of our technological era\, where the voice of nature evolves into the digital consciousness of AI. Says the artist: “the project explores how storytelling and communication evolve across time — from myth and magic to code and machine learning — revealing that our longing for connection remains constant. The Talking Tree becomes a hybrid network of memory\, where plants\, animals\, humans\, and machines coexist in an ever-expanding conversation …” \nAbove: Bahar Sabzevari\, Party (crown series) (2019)

SUMMARY:Ayad Alkadhi: Sunken Republic
DESCRIPTION:Based in New York\, Alkadhi has academic degrees in art\, engineering\, and design – and as a result brings a multidisciplinary approach to a practice that engages with the cultural and political realities of global and Middle Eastern events. \nThis exhibition reflecting the turbulence of political conflict\, social unrest\, and survival. Figures twist and merge\, anatomical precision is disrupted by drips\, neon bursts\, and dissolving edges\, battle scenes or fever dreams are evoked\, echoes of historical grandeur meet ghostly overlays and street art grit … The result\, as the gallery puts it\, is “a diasporic\, hybrid language that defies categorisation”. \nAbove: Ayad Alkadhi The Four Horsemen (2025)

SUMMARY:Darvish: Enrapture
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is described by the gallery as “a visual dialogue\, suspended between Occidental heritage and Oriental sensibilities” and “rooted in the belief that love is a direct conduit to the Divine – a state that dissolves societal constructs and expectations\, dismantling the walls they build between our true nature and the infinite …”\nDarvish acts as the living thread that ties the paintings together\, his presence an unfolding rhythm that draws the room into a single\, shared frequency. “The work represents a quiet refusal to be shaped or subdued by worldly constructs. Turning away from the discordant noise of the mundane\, the artist aligns instead with a primordial pulse – a deep\, indwelling frequency that guides the spirit into a state of heightened clarity …” \nAbove: Darvish\, Fly-By (2026)

DESCRIPTION:Influenced by the likes of Lucian Freud and Egon Schiele\, Khosravi’s drawings and paintings suggest that he’s looking for artistic ideas – “for him\, how to encounter pieces is important than pieces itself”. But does have a characteristic style of painting groups of people that appear to be faded photographs; the viewer has the same sense of nostalgia and reminiscence of better times as they would if they were looking at old family photos. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Wassef Boutros-Ghali: A Retrospective (1965-2016)
DESCRIPTION:In the canvases of Wassef Boutros-Ghali\, colours informed by a knowledge of unrelenting Mediterranean sunlight flood the flat plane of the canvas; architectural forms emerge\, collide and re-engineer themselves without a narrative. Boutros-Ghali’s art speaks to the pure and unrestricted physicality of painting\, and his compositions reflect a meticulous yet openhearted response to the human condition – marvels of reason buoyed by a lifetime’s worth of lyricism.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Bahman Mohasses: The Existential Grotesque
DESCRIPTION:The gallery describes Mohasses (d.2020) as “one of Iran’s most enigmatic modern artists … A painter\, sculptor\, and translator\, Mohasses carved out a unique space in Iranian art\, setting himself apart through his radical embrace of European modernism and a profound existential inquiry into human existence”. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Morteza Khazaie: Upside Down
DESCRIPTION:Khazaie’s solo show is inspired by nature\, particularly by trees that bend in the face of wind and storms yet do not break. These symbolise resilience and flexibility; just as in life\, people too change under pressure and harsh conditions\, being guided towards new paths. The artist’s craftsmanship and thoughtful use of wood create pieces that are both grounded and transformative\, resonating with the themes of survival\, adaptation\, and silent strength. As curator Farshad Mahoutforoush writes; “Trees that yield in storms\, yet continue to grow\, became a metaphor for how we as humans navigate change. This exhibition is my reflection on the ways we adapt\, redirect\, and find new shapes for ourselves under pressure … Through these works\, I wanted to explore how softness can be strength\, and how being ‘upside down’ might simply mean seeing things differently”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Naeemeh Kazemi: Bubble Land
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for an artist whose distinctive approach to visual storytelling lies in her ability to blend hyperrealism with dreamlike distortion. In this series\, a follow-on from her gorgeous but unsettling La La Land works\, her paintings transform the sea into a metaphor for modern existence where joy and anxiety coexist\, and spectacle conceals fragility\, turning the ocean into a theatrical\, disorienting place filled with bioluminescent creatures\, clown-like figures\, and confetti-like bubbles; every detail serves as a fragment of a larger\, immersive universe where beauty and unease intertwine – and where despite the chaos there is a space to pause\, reflect\, and immerse in a universe that resists simplification.

SUMMARY:Maydan: A Living Agora
DESCRIPTION:This clever collaboration fills one of Leila Heller’s gallery spaces with work by artists from Toronto’s Zaal Art Gallery for a short run that coincides with Art Dubai – thus providing curated exposure for rather more work than an Art Dubai booth would allow\, and for a couple of days longer too. \nThe exhibition has a theme\, too – Maydan\, “a space of gathering\, exchange\, and dialogue\, both as a physical site and as a symbolic structure embedded in Middle Eastern\, South Asian\, and global cultures … It embodies evolving notions of collectivism\, identity\, and shared presence”. So Maydan: A Living Agora brings together artists from diverse backgrounds who engage with the social\, spatial\, and conceptual dimensions of communal space with works that reflect the idea of Maydan as a platform for negotiation\, memory\, and storytelling within today’s shifting cultural landscapes … \nIt features works by Shirin Neshat\, Marcos Grigorian\, Katya Traboulsi\, Zeinab Al Hashemi\, Arash Nazari\, Lorenzo Quinn\, Aref Montazeri\, Anton Bakker\, Sofia Yeganeh\, Katya Emelyanova\, Azza Al Qubaisi\, Jehangir Vazifdar\, Marwan Sahmarani\, Y.Z Kami\, Wassef Boutros Ghali\, Soraya Sharghi\, Reza Aramesh\, Parinaz Eleish Gharagozlou\, Mehdi Farhadian\, Farideh Lashai\, and Behrang Samadzadegan. \nTo 20 April. \nAbove: Mehdi Farhadian\, Allies (2023)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Melis Buyruk: Four Birds and One Soul
DESCRIPTION:Buyruk is known for her intricate and otherworldly creations\, she has long explored the themes of harmony and individuality in nature. This new body of work\, however\, takes a more introspective turn\, reflecting on the barriers that humans create within themselves. \nThe collection is inspired by the story of the four birds from the fifth book of the Masnavi\, each representing a different aspect of the human condition: rooster for lust\, goose for greed\, crow for materialism\, and peacock for pride. Through her unique porcelain sculptures\, Buyruk transforms these symbolic concepts into tangible forms; her works juxtapose the fragility and strength of porcelain to echo the tension between human limitations and the potential for transcendence.

SUMMARY:Reza Derakshani: I Paint Your Grace\, I Paint Your Pain\, I Paint Love
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of paintings by the noted Iranian-American artist. Derakshani has a body of work that spans decades\, with examples in major institutional and private collections worldwide; this exhibition presents a selection of never-before-exhibited works from three of his celebrated series – The Hunt / Riders\, Day and Night / Fig Leaf\, and Migration / Grey Zone – that engage with themes of memory\, identity\, and transformation. \nDrawing inspiration from Persian miniature painting and poetry\, The Hunt evokes the grandeur and nostalgia of medieval iconography with the horse a symbol of spiritual and physical freedom. Day and Night / Fig Leaf explores dualities – light and darkness\, presence and absence – through expressive brushwork\, bold colours\, and rich metallic paints. Migration / Grey Zone contemplates displacement and belonging\, with the slow-walking turtle as a symbol of endurance and an enduring connection to homeland. Says the gallery: “these works offer a rare opportunity to experience the breadth of Derakshani’s artistic vision\, where past and present converge in a thoughtful exploration of form\, colour\, and narrative”. \nTo 15 September. \nAbove: Reza Derakshani\, Midnight Hunt (2024) \n

DESCRIPTION:A series of vibrant abstracts inspired by the landscape of North Head National Park in Manly\, Australia\, the area where Benvenuto works. The series is guided by intuition and emerges directly from the subconscious\, drawing on the deep reservoirs of memory; the artist captures the dynamic energy of contrasting colours\, interweaving the fundamental elements of colour\, form\, and composition to evoke the essence of landscapes. \nBenvenuto says: “Through this series\, I aim to convey the unique vibrancy and freedom of the landscapes that inspire me\, both in Australia and beyond. In Dubai\, a city that embodies innovation and creativity\, I hope my work will resonate with viewers and inspire a shared appreciation for the universal beauty of our world’s diverse landscapes.”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Sumayyah Samaha: Lines and Forms
DESCRIPTION:A range of works from the Lebanese-born NYC-based artist that are rooted in spontaneity and the intuitive interplay between forms and lines. The exhibition continues an exploration of form\, line\, and colour in a series that began in 2014 and continues to evolve with each new creation. \nSays the gallery: “Each piece in the series begins with the artist laying down forms on a blank canvas\, allowing one form to naturally lead to another\, creating a visual conversation. These forms\, each with its own narrative\, are connected by lines that serve as guiding threads\, helping the viewer navigate the complex stories that unfold across the canvas.
