SUMMARY:Urdu Worlds
DESCRIPTION:A contemporary art exhibition dedicated to the Urdu language: according to Ishara\, “the show explores how language provides the tools with which we create and shape our internal ‘worlds’. Words\, rather than simply describing our surroundings\, give rise to our private lived experiences and shared cultural understandings”. \nCurated by Hammad Nasar\, the exhibition is a visual conversation around language between Ali Kazim and Zarina (it’s also the first comprehensive presentation of Kazim’s works in the GCC). Born in Aligarh\, India\, Zarina weaves Urdu script\, proverbs and poetry into her delicate print works; Ali Kazim\, a multimedia artist based in Lahore\, Pakistan\, grounds his ‘Urdu world’ in a sense of place while exhibiting an eclecticism of influences that reflects the composite and layered history of the language. \nTo 31 May. \nAbove: Ali Kazim\, Untitled (Votive Objects) (2022). SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE No Trespassing
DESCRIPTION:Ishara’s first summer exhibition\, curated by Priyanka Mehra\, features six UAE-based and South Asian artists exploring their relationship with the street – “a collection of individual experiences that alternate between chaotic and orderly\, gritty and beautiful\, uninhibited and curated … ‘No Trespassing’ looks at the streets as a site of deconstruction and reinvention\, continually shaping and being shaped by those who pass through them”. So signposts\, building materials\, pavements\, lights\, street art\, scrapheaps and human traces all become inscriptions of a city’s movement.

SUMMARY:No Trespassing
\nH11235 (Kiran Maharjan) was unable to be present on-site to create the piece\, so his large-scale mixed-media work explores the possibilities of mark-making from a distance. An abstraction of a digital rendering presented opposite\, the work” distils the intertwined bodily and architectural elements shown in the original” while incorporating locally sourced building materials” and “explores the impact of our material surroundings on the psyche”. \nRami Farook has carved out four square metres of the gallery’s back wall to reveal its hidden infrastructure and reflect on the ownership of space – and art. \nIn the second gallery\, magpie favourite Fatspatrol (Fathima Mohiuddin) presents ‘The World Out There’\, comprising “scavenged” objects – discarded street signs\, scraps of wood and posters – marked with gestural drawings that extend beyond the mounted pieces and onto the surrounding wall. Adopting the persona of the flâneur – a solitary figure who wanders through a city\, observing and contemplating the urban landscape – the artist collects such objects to rewrite their narratives using her own voice and language. \nSara Alahbabi’s ‘For a Better Modern Something’\, an installation that explores Abu Dhabi’s evolving urban fabric\, uses cement blocks printed with maps and joined together with LED tube lights to create a scaffolding-like structure \nKhaled Esguerra’s installation in the third gallery\, challenges ongoing efforts to conceal the disorderliness of urban centres. Titled ‘Heritage Legacy Authentic’\, the work responds to the redevelopment of historic neighbourhoods\, carried out with the promise of preserving heritage and authenticity. The work invites viewers to trash the sheets of copier paper laid on the floor and featuring words drawn from the promotional messaging of such projects. \nTo 30 August. \nAbove: Fatspatrol\, The World Out There (2025: details). SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ayesha Sultana: Fragility and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:The first major solo show in the GCC for the Bangladesh-born US-based artist. Her practice spans drawing\, painting and sculpture\, “exploring the material and conceptual possibilities of form and medium … Sultana proposes that fragility can be a form of strength while encompassing profound vulnerability. This thematic exploration is particularly pertinent in the contemporary world as social\, ecological and personal upheavals continually test the limits of sustainability”. \nThe exhibition has new oil paintings\, watercolours on Japanese silk tissue\, works on clay-coated paper\, hand-blown glass sculptures\, and some past photographic explorations. Interestingly\, there’s also a hint of the creative process through the inclusion of sketchbooks\, diaries\, in-progress artworks and an unfinished video. This kind of soul-baring is all too rare in conventional gallery shows; sometimes it can get in the way of the works themselves\, but obviously there will be occasions when the artist (and/or the gallerist) understands that it might provide additional insights. As the blurb puts it\, these additions “reveal the meticulous planning\, experimentation and emotional investment underlying each finished piece\, highlighting the fragility and resilience inherent in all creative acts … The exhibition reflects the fluidity and openness that characterise Sultana’s approach to art\, allowing viewers to witness the raw\, unpolished stages of her creative journey” \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Riffing on the interwoven relationship between cities\, the natural environment and the sacred\, this show presents work by 12 artists and collectives working across diverse contexts of urban\, rural\, domestic\, communitarian\, public and non-material spaces. \nSheher\, Prakriti\, Devi comes from the Hindustani terms for ‘city’\, ‘nature’ and ‘deity’. The exhibition germinates from curator Gauri Gill’s own ongoing documentation of urban and semi-urban spaces in India; viewers are invited to regard ecology as an overlap of cultural\, natural and spiritual domains – a world where built and natural structures are rendered porous by termites\, gates open to unfinished roads\, historical ruins become homes to migratory birds while pigeons become occupants of post-colonial houses\, locusts bear witness to contemporary terrors and forests manifest as spirit sisters. \nIn this show are works by Chamba Rumal\, Chiara Camoni\, Gauri Gill\, Ladhki Devi\, Mariam Suhail\, Meera Mukherjee\, Mrinalini Mukherjee\, Rashmi Kaleka\, Shefalee Jain\, Sukanya Ghosh\, Vinnie Gill and Yoshiko Crow. \nTo 1 June. \nAbove: Chamba Rumal\, Tara. DESCRIPTION:This major solo exhibition for Sudarshan Shetty celebrates the global premiere of the artist’s latest film One Life Many with the first-ever survey of Shetty’s moving image works\, including rarely seen videos\, multimedia installations and sculptures. A key motif is a ‘poetics of listening’ – videos\, images\, objects and texts assume a fleeting presence in Shetty’s repertoire\, “as if they were musical notes that are at once real yet ungraspable\, repetitive yet novel”. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by physical and virtual tours\, educational and public programmes\, and artist conversations over the duration of the show. \nTo 9 December. \nAbove: Still from One Life Many (2022)
