SUMMARY:Move Pause Return
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Isabelle is celebrating its 20th anniversary\, not least with this interesting exhibition that grew out of a conversation with Alexie Glass-Kantor\, Curatorial Director at Art Dubai Group\, around the notion of accumulation – as both a curatorial method and a lived experience. So for this 20-day exhibition\, 20 artists have been invited to participate – “artists … who were present from the very beginning\, who helped build the ecosystem alongside us\, and who have grown\, persisted\, and moved forward together over time”. \nThe aim is to reflect “an accumulated history of stories\, relationships\, and artistic development … Accumulation here speaks to first encounters and decisive turning points\, to emblematic works that shifted narratives\, to new introductions\, neighbours\, and the wider community that has enabled the gallery to remain present\, relevant\, responsive\, and adaptable across two decades”. \nThe exhibition itself features one new work each day during the run: writers\, collectors\, and curators have been invited to engage closely with a selected work\, contributing a short text that responds to their encounter with it. The 20 days will culminate in a reception at the gallery on 11 April\, where all works will be exhibited simultaneously to mark “a collective celebration of the scene we have built\, sustained\, and continue to shape together”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Fereydoun Ave\, Raana Farnoud\, Shaqayeq Arabi: IMPROVISATIONS
DESCRIPTION:The artists in this group show have distinct visual languages that do find commonalities: they “transform the familiar through acts of care\, attention\, and intuitive play … a shared attentiveness to what is provisional\, such as a line that wavers\, a form that repeats with variation\, or a gesture made in passing but left to settle”\, as the gallery has it. \nIn Farnoud’s paintings\, forms hover between presence and disappearance. Ave’s works honour simplicity\, allowing small elements to settle into poetry. Arabi assembles delicate sculptures\, where fragility becomes a kind of resilience. \n“In a time that often demands spectacle\, these works ask us to slow down\, pay attention\, and find presence in the modest\, fragile\, and unresolved …”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mahmoud El Safadi: Personal Sea
DESCRIPTION:Exhibiting for the first time in Dubai\, Lebanese artist Mahmoud El Safadi is showing a collection of miniature paintings on playing cards\, a series of works that reflect on the Mediterranean as a site of memory\, inheritance\, and continuity – “a littoral space that is at once connective and exclusionary\, communal and privatised\, fluid and heavily policed”. Referencing the card game ‘quatorze’\, Safadi layers imagery across the cards to create “a visual palimpsest where personal and inherited memory converge with broader histories of struggle\, surveillance\, and belonging”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Abdelkader Benchamma: Rumors from the Skies
DESCRIPTION:For his third solo exhibition here\, the French-Algerian artist has taken inspiration from Kometenbuch (The Comet Book)\, a 16th-century Flemish treatise depicting comets and fantastical apparitions; Benchamma suggests how astronomy and astrology\, science and folklore\, continue to overlap in shaping our perception of the cosmos via a new body of intricate ink drawings and landscapes . Meteorites\, crying stones\, and shooting stars drift across forests and horizons\, hovering between recognition and mystery; there’s also a monumental mural paired with a projected animation that extends this vision into immersive territory\, opening onto swirling\, otherworldly sequences of light\, texture\, and form.

Referencing the card game ‘quatorze’\, Safadi layers imagery across the cards to create “a visual palimpsest where personal and inherited memory converge with broader histories of struggle\, surveillance\, and belonging”. \nThe backstory lies in the fact that the artist shares the same name as his grandfather\, who served with the British between 1939 and 1946. His grandfather’s silence about those years\, a time of war\, empire\, and displacement\, becomes an absence that El Safadi approaches through archival research\, fragmentary narratives\, and speculative painting. \nTo 2 November. \nAbove: Mahmoud El Safadi\, Personal sea (2025)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Richi Bhatia: Antevasin – the one who sits at the border of two worlds
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition at Gallery Isabelle for the UAE-based Indian artist. Her practice spans drawing\, performance\, object-making\, food interventions\, and assemblage; says the gallery\, “inviting us to engage with liminality\, her work challenges the normative categories that shape our understanding of the world and our relationships with its human and nonhuman inhabitants … Her work is at once intimate and transnational. It asks us to sit uncomfortably with the deep interconnections between heritage\, livelihood\, home\, and community-making with various forms of violence and exploitation”. \nAntevasin – the one who sits at the border of two worlds – serves as a guiding figure in this world. Through both process and form\, Bhatia’s work illuminates the porous\, shifting boundaries between life and death; Bhatia grounds much of her practice in fish and meat markets\, engaging with the lives of humans and animals whose labour and bodies are entangled within the global food industry. \nTo 10 September. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Hassan Sharif: The Storyteller
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Murtaza Vali\, this exhibition revisits Hassan Sharif’s ‘objects’\, works which expand the definition of ‘craft’ beyond notions of skill\, precision and medium-specific mastery and towards “an experimental\, experiential and embodied practice of learning\, understanding\, and knowing through making”. \nThis exhibition emphasizes materiality\, manufacture\, and form through careful groupings and juxtapositions\, pairing exhibited ‘objects’ with texts that present an account of their crafting and perception. Sharif famously characterised himself as a “single work artist\,” unifying his diverse oeuvre under one conceptual premise. The Storyteller” will attempt to trace some of the myriad material and formal complexities that are otherwise masked by this provocation\, presenting a fragmented biography and (art) history of Sharif through thee works.

SUMMARY:Hassan Sharif: The Storyteller
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Murtaza Vali\, this exhibition revisits Hassan Sharif’s ‘objects’\, works which expand the definition of ‘craft’ beyond notions of skill\, precision and medium-specific mastery and towards “an experimental\, experiential and embodied practice of learning\, understanding\, and knowing through making”. \nIts title references a 1936 essay by German philosopher and cultural critic Walter Benjamin which laments the eclipse of the art of storytelling in the modern era and posits a unique relationship between craft and storytelling – the craftsperson\, primarily preoccupied with their hands but free to listen\, provides the storyteller with a captive audience: the storyteller’s tales would help allay the tedium of repetitive action that serves as the foundation of much craft practice. \nSharif’s ‘objects’ exemplify this combination of storytelling and craft\, of narrativity and materiality. Although they obviously owe much to the Duchampian readymade\, they are undeniably handcrafted and the products of mundane manual tasks – cutting\, folding\, rolling\, twisting\, knotting\, tying\, plaiting\, weaving\, binding\, gluing\, wrapping. These actions produce small units which are then simply piled\, stacked\, bundled\, or strung together and hung to create a larger form. The artist himself explained: “Despite the fact that my works are based on a sequential\, industrial mode of creativity\, they also demolish the sequential autonomy of an industrial product.” \nThis exhibition emphasizes materiality\, manufacture\, and form through careful groupings and juxtapositions\, pairing exhibited ‘objects’ with texts that present an account of their crafting and perception. \nTo 7 June.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Hoda Tawakol: My Mothers – The Siren\, The Vessel\, The Womb
DESCRIPTION:Through film\, photography\, and sculpture\, Tawakol reclaims the female body as a site of creation and resistance\, reflecting on motherhood and the complex layers of identity. This exhibition’s centrepiece is a three-channel video made from stitched Super-8 film fragments (1960s–1980s) which portray three maternal figures: Tawakol’s mother\, Honey\, her grandmother\, Toutou\, and her nanny\, Hosneia. Each channel reveals intimate narratives\, from Honey’s complex personality to Toutou’s pivotal role in raising Tawakol and Hosneia’s nurturing presence. \n  \n

Studio portraits or holiday snaps are overlaid with snake\, shell\, or flower motifs\, exploring identity and resistance. Sculptural works like Lure (2024) and Nude (2025) reference femininity\, fertility\, and control; Hair (2011-14) and Warrior (2010) redefine hair as a symbol of strength and defiance. \nTo  28 March. \nAbove: My Mothers (2025\, still from three-channel video) \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Zé Tepedino: Marina
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the UAE by Brazilian carioca artist Zé Tepedino is curated by Amanda Abi Khalil and also features a work by Hassan Sharif. \nSays the gallery: “Marina is not a place but a tide\, a rhythm carried in folds\, fibres\, and fragments”. Zé Tepedino presents works that reflect on the layers (both physical and emotional) that shape our world. He collects the leftovers of Rio’s streets and beaches for his pieces – faded towels\, fabric from beach chairs and umbrellas\, crumpled plastic bags\, styrofoam beer coolers\, discarded Havaianas. \n“Tepedino works with urban fabrics (literally)\, speaks to the resilience of materials\, and the beauty found in the traces we leave behind.” It’s a practice that definitely echoes Hassan Sharif’s way of elevating the mundane into “art”. His Towel 4 (2013)\, included in this exhibition\, uses towels to create a bold\, gestural sculpture\, embodying the energy of repetition and transformation.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Raed Yassin: Allegorical Ruins
DESCRIPTION:Yassin explores the implications of Roland Barthes’ concept of “the return of the dead” in photography\, playing on the tension between memory and ghostliness by utilising old black and white photographs to evoke loss and the fleeting nature of memory. Yassin’s work also encompasses themes of urban decay and political upheaval\, with a particular focus on Beirut; but despite the mantle of loss and ruin\, Yassin infuses his art with moments of hope\, prompting viewers to reflect on memory’s complexities and consider the possibility of renewal amidst the remnants of the past.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mohammed Kazem and Vikram Divecha: Rest
DESCRIPTION:Two of the most distinctive Dubai-based artists with works that explore the intricate relationship between labour\, rest\, and the ever-evolving urban landscape of the UAE. “Considering the dynamics of human existence\, alternating between cycles of depletion and restoration\, the exhibition highlights the vital role of rest in the perpetual movement of cities\,” says the gallery. “Rest challenges societal norms that discourage rest\, aiming to disrupt the prevailing narrative and explore possibilities on the other side of exhaustion …”

SUMMARY:Lubna Chowdhary: Disjunctions
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition from an always interesting artist that foregrounds her distinctive disruption of material\, of tradition\, of expectations. Clay and ceramics constitute her principal media\, but she uses them to explore tensions between the handmade and the industrial\, the domestic and the urban\, ornamentation and minimalism. It’s a show of two contrasting movements: zooming out to consider structural contexts (of language\, for example\, or the built environment)\, then delving into the intricacies and minutiae of overlapping (machine-made) repetitions and (handmade) intuitions. The result is a show that revels in a succession of tensions\, disjunctions\, and upended dynamics. To 5 January. \nAbove: Lubna Chowdhary\, Sign 18 (2023)

SUMMARY:Fereydoun Ave: A Mini-Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:Tehran’s Dastan Gallery has worked with Fereydoun Ave since its establishment and has been part of many of his projects. In this exhibition\, Dastan seeks to present a glimpse into the diverse and multidimensional world and practice of the artist. \nIt makes a nice counterpoint to the major show currently at the Jameel\, which focuses on Fereydoun Ave as collector: this one looks at the man as artist. It shows a selection of works from Fereydoun Ave created over five decades\, reviewing his prolific life and expansive artistic practice. Over that time he has taken on many roles as an artist\, designer\, art director\, collector\, curator\, gallerist\, and art patron. Fereydoun Ave’s joint projects with artists\, galleries\, and institutions are an integral part of his practice. \n“Fereydoun Ave belongs to the dancers among artists – crossing cultural boundaries and mastering life with a lightness of being\, intuition and\, at times\, an element of calculation\,” writes Peter Fischer in Fereydoun Ave – Shah Abbas and his Page Boy (2016). “Ave strives to comprehend and make visible what he experiences by thinking in broad complexes of interrelated dimensions. \nTo 30 October. \nAbove: Fereydoun Ave\, Postcard from Iranestan\, Khalij Fars (2013)
