SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Monif Ajaj: Shams
DESCRIPTION:New ink drawings on paper and acrylic paintings on canvas from the French-based Syrian artist that offer viewers a journey through colour\, symbolism\, and contemplation. These are works that “reflect on the mystical power of nature\, its geometry and order\, and the existential questions it raises about human nature”\, drawing inspiration from the fields of sunflowers that grow around Ajaj’s Dordogne home. The sunflower is in dialogue with a snake motif. – “while the sunflower follows light\, embodying warmth and optimism\, the snake [is] a signifier of temptation and betrayal; in other traditions\, a symbol of renewal and healing. The works invite viewers to consider that within darkness lies the potential for renewal”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mayar Obeido: Ever in Reform
DESCRIPTION:While his previous work was embedded with themes of time\, context\, and the mutual influence of elements\, Fann À Porter’s second solo exhibition for Syrian artist Mayar Obeido introduces a focus towards place\, location\, and grounding. The artist navigates a state of shifting environments and fragmentation\, where borders and limits are suddenly flexible\, reflecting the inherent tension between stability and transformation.

SUMMARY:Mayar Obeido: Ever in Reform
DESCRIPTION:Fann À Porter’s second solo exhibition for Syrian artist Mayar Obeido features his signature reconfigured table\, presented as an independent element for the first time in his practice\, with an accompanying series of black ink and coloured paper studies. \nWhile his previous work was embedded with themes of time\, context\, and the mutual influence of elements\, this series introduces a focus towards place\, location\, and grounding. The artist navigates a state of shifting environments and fragmentation\, where borders and limits are suddenly flexible\, reflecting the inherent tension between stability and transformation. Through his process\, Obeido found that the table progressively transformed like a frame-by-frame animated sequence\, constantly shapeshifting. In some studies\, the table legs take the form of his characters’ hands; in others\, the table asserts itself as a distinct entity. \nTo 24 May. \nAbove: Mayar Obeido\, Untitled (2025)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Hady Boraey: Migrants to the North
DESCRIPTION:The second solo show at this gallery for the Egyptian artist\, featuring new works by the artist that delve into themes of memory\, nostalgia\, and childhood. Inspired by ancient Egyptian and Coptic art\, Boraey heavily depends on metaphors\, “taking his audience on a dramatic journey filled with poetic nuances to coax them into new territory beyond their comfort zones” as the gallery puts it. \nThe artist himself says the inspiration came from his father’s library: “In my journey from childhood to maturity\, I was affected and dreamed a lot of another distant land to live in. There is nothing in it but a rock\, a horse\, a tree and a lake. A pure\, simple dream. Here\, in some of these paintings\, I tried to convey my childhood dream in paintings that carry many of the feelings of Hady the child\, whose life took him far from his home in the Delta. He still dreams of the legends of his grandmother’s old tales …

DESCRIPTION:A solo show for Marina Fedorova featuring painting\, graphics\, limited-edition colour prints\, 3D printing\, and augmented-reality pieces. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Farid Abu Shakra: Threads of Landscape — Engraved Narratives
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of works that fuse engraving\, embroidery\, and landscape\, presented by Gallery One\, Ramallah. In Abu Shakra’s work\, landscapes are more than geographical representations: “they are woven tapestries of experience and narrative”\, says the gallery. “Each piece captures a layered perspective\, where fine lines and punctuated textures convey the enduring presence of land and community … The engravings draw from traditional forms while experimenting with contemporary techniques\, creating a visual language that is both timeless and strikingly relevant … Landscape is not merely a backdrop; it is an active storyteller\, revealing the layered histories and enduring spirit of the communities it represents”.

\nTo 4 January. \nAbove: Farid Abu Shakra\, County’s Landscape – Gaza Sky 4 (2022)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Arda Aslanian: Obscured / Untold Stories
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition for the self-taught Armenian-Jordanian artist who uses her meticulously crafted works to explore the intricacies between visibility and concealment\, using drapery as a metaphor for the complexities of human experience. This series of works delves into the delicate boundaries that define our personal narratives that are often left untold. The gallery comments that “Aslanian’s use of a single-colour gradation technique increases the viewer’s confusion regarding the symbolism of the scene and imposes silence on us. Perhaps this is what she seeks: silence in a world full of noise.”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Majd Kurdieh: Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Aleppo-born Lebanese-based artist with a very distinctive practice – he paints with cartoon-like characters to talk about the current state of the world\, usually a boy (Fasoon) and a girl (Fasooneh) who are always smiling despite the fact that their world is filled with hardships; they share it with a group of animal characters called the Very Scary Butterfly Gang\, Their main mission is to combat the sadness of the world with their sole weapon\, the flower. For the current show\, Kurdieh’s fifth at Fann A Porter by our count\, he’s concentrating on the butterflies: “In the hope of a future in which the field comes back laughing and the seas are more merciful\, when the fires go out and the birds return to their nests\, and a young painter less careless than me comes and says to you: ‘I painted the butterfly because I love the colour of its wings'”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Khaled Jarada: Non Key Frame
DESCRIPTION:The title of this exhibition evokes a notion that originates from the world of the moving image. Key frames are those that define a scene in a film; they set its starting as well as ending point\, they are typically the most important frames and so they are the ones into which creators put more thought and spend more time developing. Non-key frames are intermediates\, coming between two crucial moments and defined only through an external reference. In this solo show Khaled Jarada finds a similar hierarchy in specific modes of historiography\, where history is reduced to key moments\, key figures\, key geographies\, and key cultures; his work refutes that rigid hierarchy\, instead elevating those devalued and mundane moments\, places\, objects\, and figures to become worthy of display\, appreciation\, and idealization. His figures appear imbalanced\, anxious\, and out of place. The in-betweenness in these works is spatial as well as temporal …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Omran Younis: Rise of the Cactus
DESCRIPTION:A new body of work in this solo exhibition from Syrian artist Orman Younis offers “a poignant social commentary on his surroundings\, the human condition\, and current state of political affairs in the region” that “combines ideas of post-Modernism with expressionist techniques to develop a painterly language which can be universally understood”. The cactus is provided as a symbol of resilience – and of patience\, since the word for cactus and patience is the same in Arabic – as a symbolic commentary on the war in his home country.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ahmad Moualla: Combustions
DESCRIPTION:The Syrian artist’s first solo exhibition with this gallery (and his first show in eight years) is a series of new works on paper created in 2023. Considered one of the pioneers of modernism and expressionism in Syria\, Moualla was the first of his peers to introduce interactive performance to his work; though he no longer incorporates performance\, the act and process of creating his works is a performance in itself – he’s known for his dramatic\, intensely theatrical large-scale canvasses. \n“Blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction\, consciousness and subconsciousness\, Moualla reflects on the ambiguities that are constantly in our minds and part of our daily lives” says the gallery. ” Calling for a reconsideration of socially rooted axioms\, specifically in Arab society and through the process of a war\, the artist intentionally poses questions ideas of power\, free-will\, and choices.” \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ahmad Kasha: A Moment of Peace
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the young Syrian painter. “Those who follow Kasha’s experience will notice his transition from expressive realism shortly after his graduation from the College of Fine Arts to expressionism\, which tends toward abstraction in a fluid experimentation that attempts to get rid of the customs and traditions that constitute the painting composed by the Syrian professional in general. Colours ignite and fade\, get dirty and wash away\, falling here and there unintentionally or intentionally\, left to say what they say. Behold the voice of this experience muttering in our eyes and lips of this young soul of animals of blood and fire …” \nTo 17 February. \nAbove: Ahmad Kasha\, Untitled (2023) \n

SUMMARY:Mayar Obeido: Mutual Change
DESCRIPTION:Over the last year\, the Dubai-based Syrian artist has produced a large body of work that explores the interconnectedness of everyday life. Interested in the concept of change and the visual possibilities of documenting this process\, Obeido’s work considers how the passage of time can alter an object’s appearance and physical state; as the monotony of daily routines causes us to interact and pay attention to the spaces and things that form reality\, the artist encourages a deeper look into how we experience everyday objects as a means of understanding consciousness. \nWhereas figurative painting and drawing are typically understood as snapshots of a time and place\, Obeido reimagines the compositional space as a site where images seem to evolve in real time. He achieves this sense of continuous motion by first covering his canvases with collaged newspapers that serve as a sort of timestamp\, establishing context. Using charcoal\, he then draws his riotous scenes over these textured surfaces. The paintings are finished with atmospheric washes of acrylic paint that bring these disparate layers together while illuminating his darkened scenes. \nTo 30 November. \nAbove: Mayar Obeido\, Apple Observer 2 (2023)
