SUMMARY:Carmina Burana
DESCRIPTION:Carl Orff’s choral crowdpleaser gets the full production from Dubai Singers & Orchestra – some 120 singers accompanied by a 50-piece orchestra. \nIt will be conducted by Dubai Singers’ Music Director Jennie Lee-Foster\, The performance will feature a trio of soloists: soprano Ana Kovacevic and tenor Charles McGlone (both local) plus bass James Atkinson\, flying in specially from the UK. Dubai Singers will also be joined by members of the Abu Dhabi-based Al Khabairat Choral Society. \nCamena Burana is an exciting work musically\, percussive and highly rhythmical. Its background is interesting too; the cantata is based on a collection of Mediaeval poems and dramatic texts of the same name\, written (probably) by students\, clergy and young monks. Most of the pieces are irreverent and satirical\, some are very bawdy too. There are more than 250 in total\, but Carl Orff only picked a couple of dozen for his work. \nOrff actually expected performances of Carmena Burana to incorporate something else happening on the stage\, dance or theatre (or in some productions a kind of live painting session); that rarely happens these days\, though this time there will be a musical interlude featuring an ensemble from the Dubai Ballet Centre. \nDoors open at 6.30pm\, and there will be an iftar in the lobby area before the performance starts at 8pm.

SUMMARY:Dubai Singers & Orchestra: Verdi Requiem
DESCRIPTION:What looks like the largest and most ambitious concert yet – in nearly 60 years of performance – for Dubai Singers & Orchestra. Some 90 singers and a 60-piece orchestra will perform the seven-part requiem mass\, one of classical music’s greatest showcases (not least because Verdi applied his operatic inclinations to the subject). Four professional soloists are flying in from the UK too: Elizabeth Donovan (soprano)\, Hannah Pedley (mezzo-soprano)\, Matthew Minter (tenor) and Christopher Sheldrake (bass). Music Director Jennie Lee-Foster conducts. Should be a good evening. \n \n

SUMMARY:Candlelight Premium: Beethoven's Best Works
DESCRIPTION:The title of this concert certainly sets the bar high\, though it seems a pretty good selection of the composer’s works for piano. The pianist is Magdalena Wajdzik\, and the other plus is the way these recitals are lit by candlelight. The programme last around 65 minutes: \n♦ ‘Für Elise’ (Bagatelle no.25 in A minor)\n♦ Piano Sonata No.21 op.31 (Waldsten) – 1st movement\n♦ Piano Sonata op.13 ‘Pathetique’ – 1st\, 2nd and 3rd movements\n♦ Piano Sonata op. 27 No.2 (Moonlight) – 1st\, 2nd and 3rd movements\n♦ Symphony No.5 (transcription for solo piano by Liszt) – 1st movement \nThe programme lasts about 56 minutes; there are performances at 7pm and again at 9pm. \n

SUMMARY:Natalia Osipova: Force of Nature
DESCRIPTION:Called by The Independent “the most sought-after ballerina in the world”\, Natalia Osipova’s Abu Dhabi Classics show promises a programme of favourite classics and contemporary masterpieces. Her new dance company\, Blooms Dance Project\, which has been running now for a year\, has a twofold goal: to preserve her iconic roles and to create new works through worldwide touring. In practice this means lots of Giselle et al\, and the Dying Swan to finish the evening\, with a company that includes principal dancers from some of the big-name ballet troupes. Earlier this year Osipova performed Force of Nature in New York to generally rapturous reviews\, though one or two suggested the new pieces were a tad disappointing – but then it’s the classics where she made her name\, and it’s the classics that we want to see. \nThe prices are pretty good – the best seats are AED 250\, but you can still get a balcony spot for AED 75 – but this is sure to sell out so get in quickly …

SUMMARY:Candlelight Abu Dhabi: Best of Chopin
DESCRIPTION:Fever brings its candlelight classical music recitals to Abu Dhabi again – “a series of classical music concerts aimed at democratising access to classical music by allowing people all over the world to enjoy live candlelit music performances … by creating intimate experiences where fans can connect directly with their favourite artists”. SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi Classics 2023: Yo-Yo Ma & Kathryn Stott
DESCRIPTION:The celebrated cellist is accompanied on piano by his long-time friend and collaborator Kathryn Stott. We don’t know what the programme will be\, but their pandemic album Songs of Comfort and Hope had 21 tracks ranging across modern arrangements of traditional folk tunes\, canonical pop songs\, jazz standards\, and mainstays from the western classical repertoire. That could make for a promising evening; Yo-Yo Ma’s current obsession though is Our Common Nature\, “a celebration of the ways nature can reinvigorate the human experiment\, reuniting us in pursuit of a common future …” It’s a broad and searching initiative that explores ways in which we can heal\, and enrich\, our relationship with the world around us\, typically being realised as left-field collaborations and on-site explorations that may well inform this concert. Prices start at a very reasonable level.
