SUMMARY:Aïda Muluneh: This Bloom I Borrow
DESCRIPTION:A new series of images by the Ethiopian art photographer\, her second solo exhibition at the gallery. The show includes 10 works that have never been seen before\, using techniques developed through Muluneh’s recent residency at Efie. \nMuluneh has been a distinctive voice in contemporary photography throughout her 25-year career; her vivid\, carefully staged photographs of painted figures in surreal settings draw on African iconography\, architecture and textiles to create narratives that blur the boundaries between photography\, painting and performance. Muluneh has developed an experimental process that bridges photography\, silkscreen printing and hand-painting to transform photographs into unique\, painterly objects. \nThe works are characterised by bold geometric compositions and recurring symbols such as eyes\, keys\, masks\, flowers\, and ancestral motifs\, mostly rendered in striking primary colours. They continue Muluneh’s ongoing enquiry into ideas of identity\, womanhood and heritage through a lens of material experimentation. \nAt 4.30pm on the opening day of the exhibition\, Aïda Muluneh will talking about her work with exhibition catalogue contributor\, artist and curator Sheikh Maktoum Al Maktoum. \nTo 5 April. \n \n

SUMMARY:Tajouj: dir Gadalla Gubara (1977)
DESCRIPTION:The first feature film to be directed by a Sudanese filmmaker\, this historical romance tells of the beautiful Tajouj whose cousin publicly declares his love for her in a song. The traditions of the tribe decry such an act and his proposal of marriage is initially refused – but he apologises\, and the marriage is finally allowed. In the meantime\, however\, another suitor has appeared with tragic consequences … \nScreens as part of a monthly film programme in Efie’s Rekord Gallery tracing the intertwined histories of African and Arab Liberation Cinema: “through a carefully curated selection of films\, the series interrogates how revolutionary aesthetics\, political struggle\, and the diasporic imagination have shaped\, and continue to shape\, the language of cinema across continents”. It’s organised with Bootleg Griot\, an independent public library project currently ensconced in the Rekord Gallery that is aimed at improving access to literature and print media – especially from writers and collectives of African descent.

SUMMARY:Xala: dir Ousmane Sembène (1975)
DESCRIPTION:This Senegalese satirical comedy\, written and directed by Ousmane Sembène as an adaptation of his own novel\, finds a corrupt government official cursed with crippling erectile dysfunction upon the day of his marriage. He comes to realise it’s connecting with his embezzling\, and it can be cured only by having the lowly of society spit on him … Adeptly combining elements of African folklore and popular cinema\, Sembène has produced a hilarious\, caustic satire of political corruption under an inept patriarchy. \nScreens as part of a monthly film programme in Efie’s Rekord Gallery tracing the intertwined histories of African and Arab Liberation Cinema: “through a carefully curated selection of films\, the series interrogates how revolutionary aesthetics\, political struggle\, and the diasporic imagination have shaped\, and continue to shape\, the language of cinema across continents”. SUMMARY:The Wind Will Carry Us: dir Abbas Kiarostami (1999)
DESCRIPTION:Kiarostami wrote and directed this deceptively simple but highly affecting film about a journalist posing as a city engineer who arrives in a Kurdish village to document the locals’ mourning rituals in anticipation of the death of an old woman. She doesn’t die\, though\, and the journalist is forced to slow down and appreciate the lifestyle of the village. The result is a beautifully shot movie\, simple and honest\, about life\, death\, and living … \nScreens as part of a new monthly film programme in Efie’s Rekord Gallery tracing the intertwined histories of African and Arab Liberation Cinema: “through a carefully curated selection of films\, the series interrogates how revolutionary aesthetics\, political struggle\, and the diasporic imagination have shaped\, and continue to shape\, the language of cinema across continents”. SUMMARY:I Am Cuba: dir Mikhail Kalatozov (1964)
DESCRIPTION:A landmark in radical political cinema and one of the most visually ravishing films ever made\, this legendary hymn to revolution was the product of an ambitious collaboration between the Soviet and Cuban film industries\, I Am Cuba unfolds in four explosive vignettes that capture Cuban life on the brink of transformation\, as crushing economic exploitation and inequality give way to a working-class uprising. \nThe film the last in a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support Efie Gallery’s current group exhibition time heals\, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July).

SUMMARY:Shades of Yellow: dir Sergio Pontier (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Sergio Pontier reshapes the portrayal of black childhood\, reflecting on the innocence of his youth and how it defined him; voyaging into mundane moments from his childhood\, made nostalgic and meaningful on reflection\, the Afro-Dominican-Spanish photographer and filmmaker has created a visual poem that touches on identity\, blackness\, community\, brotherhood and friendship and seeks to return to a time when the desire to grow up overruled all. Pontier rejects the common portrayal of black childhood as dark and dangerous\, questioning the often violent depictions he found himself unable to relate to. \nShades of Yellow shows in a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support Efie Gallery’s current group exhibition time heals\, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July).

SUMMARY:Al Mahatta: dir Eltayeb Mahdi (1989)
DESCRIPTION:Sudan\, late 1980s. People cross the desert on foot or cover long distances by car and truck. In Al Mahatta\, Eltayeb Mahdi shows encounters at one of the large crossroads between Khartoum in the centre of the country and Bur Sudan on the Red Sea. \nEltayeb Mahdi studied in Cairo and became part of the Sudanese Film Group\, which was founded with the intention of telling stories about their country and confronting young people with the realities of their homeland. Identity formation – not through the detour of referencing Europe or America\, but with a view to the situation in their own country. Al Mahatta shows in a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support Efie Gallery’s current group exhibition time heals\, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July).

SUMMARY:This Is Not a Burial\, It's a Resurrection: dir Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese (2019)
DESCRIPTION:Much-awarded poetic and emotional feature from Lesotho\, a vivid\, beautifully crafted reflection on identity\, community and the tension between respecting age-old traditions and accepting the seemingly unstoppable march of progress. When her village is threatened with forced resettlement due to the construction of a reservoir\, an 80-year-old widow finds a new will to live and ignites the spirit of resilience within her community; her grief becomes the catalyst for a community’s growing defiance in a mesmerising fictional debut by writer/director Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese. \nShows with Happy Times (dir Khalil Agboola\, 2024: 15 mins) as part of a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support Efie Gallery’s current group exhibition time heals\, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July).

SUMMARY:Mami Wata: dir CJ Obasi (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Much-awarded black-and-white fantasy thriller\, based on Nigerian folklore. Said the LA Times: “That balance between light and dark is how Obasi most potently underscores all his themes: faith and proof\, tradition versus modernity\, the otherworldly alongside the human\, and of course\, Mami Wata’s power to give and take”. \nScreens with Baptized by Fire (dir Kach Offor\, 2024: 15 mins) – a psychedelic exploration of anxiety\, social alienation and the inefficacy of escapism: a regular visit to a dealer in the slums of Lagos takes an unexpected turn and forces this anxious stoner on a different kind of trip. \nThis is the opener for a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support the gallery’s current group exhibition time heals\, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July). \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Dance Will Be You
DESCRIPTION:Efie Gallery continues its commendable promotion of artists of African origin with this group show featuring María Magdalena Campos-Pons\, ahead of her debut solo exhibition in the Middle East at Efie in April\, alongside works by JK Bruce-Vanderpuije\, Dina Nur Satti and Myles Igwebuike. The gallery says the exhibition “offers a nuanced exploration of the symbolic and performative dimensions within contemporary African art\, focusing on themes of contemplation\, devotion\, and transcendence – each of which resonates with deeper cultural narratives. \nIt’s certainly an interesting group: María Magdalena Campos-Pons is an internationally acclaimed artist whose work explores themes of memory\, identity\, and history\, drawing from her Cuban and Yoruba heritage. JK Bruce-Vanderpuije (1899 – 1989)\,has an extensive archive of photography documenting the cultural history from West Africa. Dina Nur Satti creates ceramics deeply influenced by her studies of African art and pre-colonial African societies. And Myles Igwebuike explores the Mbari houses of Igbo culture in his design practice.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Abdoulaye Konaté: Sambadio
DESCRIPTION:This solo show for the pioneering Malian artist Abdoulaye Konaté is inspired by the final track of Ali Farka Touré’s iconic 1976 album Le Jeune Chansonnier du Mali. The song Sambadio celebrates farmers with lyrics reflecting a father’s passionate plea for his son to honour the earth. In a similar vein\, Konaté’s latest works draw upon themes of Bedouin culture\, integrating motifs that pay tribute to their relationship with the land. \nKonaté creates large-scale textile-based installations using woven and dyed materials native to his homeland Mali. His abstract and figurative tableaux explore both aesthetic language and diverse socio-political and environmental issues; this show includes a new monumental work 9m wide.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mohamed Yousif and Maggie Otieno: Solace in Soil
DESCRIPTION:A duo exhibition for Emirati artist Mohamed Yousif and Kenyan sculptor Maggie Otieno that “celebrates the grounded connections between the practices of the two artists and the cross-cultural exchange between the Middle East and Africa”. Or as curator Shamma Al Mheiri puts it\, “Maggie Otieno and Dr Mohamed Yousif share leitmotifs of expressing generational sentiments and experiences through tangible expressions. Perhaps distinct in visual identities\, Otieno and Dr Yousif manifest connections deeper than the aesthetic portrayals in a state of continual solace …” The gallery is equally effusive: “This exhibition fosters a symbiotic exchange between the artists and their artistic practices\, intimately linked to their earthy foundations\, enabling their work to converse and showcase the interconnectedness between the regions”. \nMohamed Yousif is regarded as a pioneer of UAE sculpture and is one of the founders of the Emirates Fine Art Society. His 3D work is typically carefully crafted and delicate wooden sculptures\, many woven out of palm tree fronds handpicked in the UAE desert. He has featured in several exhibitions\, including The National Pavilion of the UAE at the 2015 and 2017 Venice Biennales. \nMaggie Otieno characteristically works with long abstract figures comprised of distressed railway sleepers\, originally from India and used to lay the ‘iron snake’ railway line in Kenya at the end of the 19th century – carrying within them stories of travellers\, labourers and communities. “Through her deft manipulation of form and texture\, she endeavours to imbue her sculptures with a sense of temporal continuity\, affording them a palpable resonance with the viewer’s own lived experiences”.

SUMMARY:Unveiling the Shadows of the Past: J.K. Bruce-Vanderpuije – the hidden icon of photography in Africa
DESCRIPTION:The first gallery show to be dedicated to the work of the noted Ghanaian photographer’s seminal works\, telling the story of Ghanaian modern history through the lens of a local and one which captures the nation in the throes of British colonial rule yet on the cusp of independence. As the gallery note says\, “The power behind Bruce-Vanderpuije’s images lies in the pride and determination of each sitter captured during a period in which two worlds merge into one: Ghanaian traditional heritage and western style modernity”. \nCurated by Ethiopian photographer Aida Muluneh\, the show will have more than two dozen previously unseen black-and-white images by Bruce-Vanderpuije\, depicting life in Ghana in the 1920s and 30s and offering insight into the formation of an independent\, 20th-century Ghanaian social and political identity. \nTo 20 February. \nThe opening evening (12 January\, 6.30-8pm) features a discussion between curator Aïda Muluneh and J.K. Bruce-Vanderpuije’s granddaughter Kate Tamakloe covering the photograph’s career and the importance of archiving and photography on the African continent from the 1920s to the present day. \nAbove: J.K. SUMMARY:Victor Ekpuk: INTERwoven TEXTures
DESCRIPTION:The Nigerian-American artist’s solo debut in the Middle East is an exhibition of painting and sculpture that continues his exploration of Nsibidi\, an ancient Nigerian graphic communication system. \nA tribute to the power of dialogue and collective human experiences\, this new body of work – developed during a residency at NYUAD – sees the artist return to the use of wood\, a medium that he employed regularly in the 1990s and 2000s while living in Lagos. Also on show: four new metal sculptures and two previously unseen works on canvas. \nThe pieces are painted with Ekpuk’s own unique language of abstraction\, made up of intricate scripture\, symbols and mark-making inspired by the pictograms of Nsibidi to confront the heritage and history of the African diaspora as a means of considering its present and its future. \nIt also provokes viewers to consider the wide-ranging nature of calligraphy\, spiritual art and writings used within sacred spaces; and this exhibition forms part of the inaugural Dubai Calligraphy Biennale (1 – 31 October)\, of which Efie Gallery is a partner. Ekpuk also will be unveiling a specially commissioned public installation in d3 for the Calligraphy Biennale. Measuring 4m high and 6m wide\, Ekpuk’s interactive aluminium installation is also covered in his Nsibidi-inspired symbolic script. \nTo 21 November.

SUMMARY:Ever-Present
DESCRIPTION:A group show by six African artists presenting “a captivating and thought-provoking collection of artworks that highlight the diverse landscapes and thematic intersections of African art across generations … The exhibition offers a glimpse into the complex histories\, traditions\, and values that have shaped the artists and the communities they represent. The selected artists and artworks delve into profound themes and challenge conventional thinking in their respective works\, exploring the connections between past and present\, investigating how personal and collective histories continue to shape our understanding of the world …” An interesting-sounding attempt to capture the essence of Africa through “an exploration of the interplay between cultural heritage and the forces of globalisation”. \nThe artists: \n\nJ.K.
