DESCRIPTION:One of modern jazz’s most influential living masters recently released an album titled Sounds from the Ancestors. “The concept initially was about trying to get some of the musical sounds that I remembered as a kid growing up – sounds that lift your spirit from people like John Coltrane\, Aretha Franklin\, Marvin Gaye\, and the spiritual side of the church\,” says Garrett. “When I started to think about them\, I realised it was the spirit from my ancestors.” \nThe result is clearly based in the rich jazz\, R&B\, and gospel history of his hometown of Detroit\, but also reflects a modern cosmopolitan vibe – notably music from France\, Cuba\, Nigeria and Guadeloupe. Matilda the Musical is that show”. \nThe script by Tony Award-winning playwright Dennis Kelly is excellent\, sticking close enough to the original but making the most of the live-action theatricality of the stage; Tim Minchin’s original songs are terrific\, mixing wit with sing-along choruses. And it’s a Royal Shakespeare Company production\, which is itself an assurance of quality and professionalism. The premium ticket price should be worth it … \nMatilda The Musical is directed by Matthew Warchus. Sets and costumes are by Rob Howell\, with choreography by Peter Darling. All three are also Tony winners\, along with the lighting director Hugh Vanstone. His betrayal and Cio-Cio-san’ shame and sorrow leads her s to take destiny into her own hands; the final scene is one of the most devastating you’ll find in any opera. \nThis company performs the fifth and final version of Puccini’s reworkings of the piece; its production\, by director Miklós Gábor Kerényi\, has enjoyed success with audiences since 2000. DESCRIPTION:The Hungarian National Ballet is in Dubai for three days with a critically acclaimed Swan Lake. Tchaikovsky’s first (and by many accounts best) ballet has the iconic casting of the same female ballet dancer for both Odette – the pure\, innocent white swan – and Odile – the seductive\, manipulative black swan. This version follows the classic Petipa/Ivanov choreography\, adapted by Rudi van Dantzig and Toer van Schayk in 1988; it has been in this company’s repertoire since 2015. \nThere’s a full company and crops de danse. Odette/Odile is shared between Tatyjana Melnyik and Maria Yakovleva in successive performances\, with Ganna Muromtseva as cover; the dashing young prince Siegfried is danced by Gergő Ármin Balázsi and Louis Scrivener\, with Iurii Kekalo covering.
