SUMMARY:War and Peace
DESCRIPTION:Tolstoy’s epic novel has often resisted dramatisation as a one-off theatrical performance – it’s huge\, after all\, which is the classic BBC series from 1972 ran for fully 20 episodes and Sergei Bondarchuk’s film adaptation from the 60s spanned seven hours in four parts. This version\, by celebrated director Rimas Tuminas and delivered by the Vakhtangov State Academic Theatre of Russia\, comes in a more manageable four hours plus a (much needed) intermission; but it has still received favourable reviews\, with few complaints about its sweep and spectacle – it seems that most of the grandeur and complexity of Tolstoy’s work has been retained\, with the Napoleonic Wars as the background for the lives\, ambitions\, hopes and sorrows of the three families portrayed: the Rostovs\, the Bolkonskys\, the Kuragins. \nIt’s performed in Russian with English surtitles. There’s a second performance on 18 January at 5pm.

Directed by ETT’s Artistic Director\, Richard Twyman\, the play speaks to a world we find ourselves living in now\, asking why Macbeth has haunted our fears and nightmares for centuries and what lessons this cautionary tale is still trying to communicate to us … \nThe production emphasises the politics – “a struggling and divided nation\, tearing itself apart. So\, when the Macbeths see their chance at the crown\, why shouldn’t they take it?” – but looks beyond the naked opportunism that seems so familiar to Western audiences: “Dreams quickly turn to nightmares\, humanity erodes\, nature stirs. As society strives to make sense of the darkness that sits inside it\, how long will it take for people to fight back against the endless cycle of violence and corruption?” \nIt’s a co-production with Northern Stage\, Shakespeare North Playhouse and Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg. There are further performances at at 3pm and 8pm on 4 November\, and at 3pm on 5 November.

DESCRIPTION:Violinist David Garrett has built a reputation for his fearless playing and genre-defying repertoire (he has won awards in both classical and pop categories). A genuine child prodigy\, he became the youngest artist to sign with Deutsche Grammophon at 13; aged 15\, he recorded all 24 Caprices by Paganini\, famously among the most difficult pieces written for violin. He studied at The Juilliard School in New York with Itzhak Perlman and has been described by Yehudi Menuhin as “the greatest violinist of his generation”. \nOver the past two decades David Garrett has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors and reached new audiences around the globe with his classical and crossover repertoire. \nLate last year he released a new album\, Iconic\, which pays homage to the great violinists of the golden age. It represents a personal selection of repertoire gems\, including new arrangements for violin\, guitar and orchestra of pieces by Bach\, Gluck\, Mendelssohn\, Schumann\, Dvorák\, and Kreisler\, among others. Having been specially arranged for violin\, guitar\, and orchestra\, these pieces take on a fresh\, intimate\, and distinctive character. \nGarrett is joined for this concert by his guitarist and co-arranger\, Franck van der Heijden\, who also directs Orchestra The Prezent. “I’ve recorded many virtuoso albums myself\,” says the violinist. “This time it was particularly important to me to refocus on the essentials\, on what really speaks to the heart.”
