DESCRIPTION:The Day May Break (2021–) is an ongoing global series portraying people and animals whose lives have been profoundly affected by environmental degradation and destruction. This fourth chapter of the series was photographed in Jordan\, one of the most water-scarce countries in the world\, and features portraits of refugee families who fled the war in Syria and now live in Jordan – an ongoing displacement largely driven by the effects of climate change. Many are forced to relocate multiple times each year\, following seasonal agricultural work and scarce rainfall. \nThis chapter in the series is a testament to connection and resilience — an affirmation that even when all else is lost\, we still have one another. Photographic historian Philip Prodger has described the series as “a landmark body of work by one of photography’s great environmental champions … Channelling his outrage into quiet determination\, the result is a portrait of us all\, at a critical moment in the Anthropocene”.

SUMMARY:Inked in time
DESCRIPTION:Custot’s new show is a group exhibition of works on paper\, by Fernando Botero\, Richard Höglund\, Marc Quinn\, Pablo Reinoso\, Bernar Venet and Fabienne Verdier. \nHöglund’s magnifies the interaction of ink and paper\, highlighting the fluid and marking properties of ink in nuanced shades. Watercolours by the late Colombian master Fernando Botero shows jovial portraits in his signature style with the delicacy\, fluidity\, and transparency of coloured inks. Venet’s etchings emphasise the artist’s iconic geometrical style of the artist; angles and lines become collapsed\, in a study on equilibrium\, randomness\, and the physical laws ruling our universe. Works on paper by Fabienne Verdier are spread throughout the gallery\, mostly studies of Mont Sainte-Victoire in France inspired by her decade of learning with the last remaining masters of Chinese calligraphy. Marc Quinn champions what he calls ‘’a different kind of heroism” in drawings that deal with the unreal image of the idolized body: fashion model and media icon Kate Moss\, presented here as an idealized figure more akin to a cultural hallucination than an actual person. And Whimsical Chinese ink drawings by Pablo Reinoso recall our experiences of lockdown during the pandemic. Characters and abstract shapes symbolise the dichotomy between distance and interconnectedness that characterized our lockdowns. \nTo 26 November. \nAbove: Bernar Venet\, Acute Angles – Disorder (2022)
