SUMMARY:To Know Malaysia is to Love Malaysia: Major Highlights from The AFK Collection
DESCRIPTION:A group show by pioneering first-generation Malaysian contemporary artists\, selected from The AFK Collection — the most comprehensive collection of Malaysian contemporary art from the 1980s to the present. Exhbiited artists include Ahmad Shukri Mohammed\, Ahmad Fuad Osman\, Ali Nurazmal\, Anniketyni Madian\, Fauzan Omar\, Hamir Soib\, Masnoor Ramli\, Susyilawati Sulaiman\, Yusof Ghani\, and Zulkifli Yusoff. \nThe featured artists have witnessed Malaysia’s transformation from a largely agrarian\, newly independent country to a modern\, dynamic nation. As well as highlighting the individual artists\, the exhibition will address critical aspects of that journey; by contextualising these works within broader social and political frameworks\, the exhibition aims to create a broader understanding of contemporary Malaysian society. \nTo 13 September. \nAbove: Ahmad Fuad Osman\, Midnight Song (Mulu)

SUMMARY:Akram Khan Company: Jungle Book reimagined
DESCRIPTION:The second and final performance for this bold adaptation of Kipling’s classic tale which explores urgent themes such as climate change and human displacement. Akram Khan and his team have reimagined the journey of Mowgli through the eyes of a refugee caught in a world devastated by the impact of climate change. This is the story of a child who will help us to listen again – not to our voices but to the voices of the natural world that we\, the modern world\, try to silence. \nAudiences are promised “a visually stunning and emotionally charged experience”\, which is broadly what you expect from a Khan piece … The script is by Tariq Jordan\, with dramaturgy by Sharon Clark to an original score by Jocelyn Pook. Sound design comes from Gareth Fry\, lighting by Michael Hulls\, visual stage design by Miriam Buether\, and video design and animation by YeastCulture the visual technology turns the stage into a magical world that dives into the myths of today. \nJungle Book reimagined is performed by ten dancers: Maya Balam Meyong\, Bea Bidault\, Ferghas Clavey\, Harry Theadora Foster\, Filippo Franzese\, Bianca Mikahil\, Jasper Narvaez\, Max Revell\, Matthew Sandiford\, Elpida Skourou\, Jan Mikaela Villanueva\, Lani Yamanaka. \nThis performance is supported by the British Council in the UAE.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Through the Seasons with Eric Carle
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in the region\, the work of the noted illustrator and children’s book author (more than 70 titles to his name\, including of course The Very Hungry Caterpillar) is celebrated through Carle’s brilliant imagery of the seasons\, from hibernating bears in winter and hatching chicks in spring to colourful flowers in summer and ripe apple trees in the fall. SUMMARY:The Youth Orchestra: Concert for Children
DESCRIPTION:The Youth Orchestra is such a good idea: the International Music Institute— one of the oldest music schools in the country\, founded in 1994 — runs it as a free-of-charge programme for would-be music students in the United Arab Emirates\, selected through audition. The young musicians get a year of rehearsals and workshops with a series of public concerts (four are scheduled for 2023). \nFor this\, its second concert of the year\, the Youth Orchestra will be playing “music for the whole family and all-time kids favourites”. We have no idea exactly what’s on the programme.
