SUMMARY:Anna: dir Monica Guerritore (2025)
DESCRIPTION:An emotional biopic about the famed Italian actress Anna Magnani. In 1956\, Magnani was in the running for the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role; waiting for the news to arrive\, she spends the night wandering the alleys and squares of Rome\, among the people who love her and the memories that inhabit her heart. With her\, there is a young girl who will become her agent: Carol Levi. Dawn brings her victory\, but it is a very brief one … Anna is the story\, an impetuous woman and the world of Italian cinema that revolves around her. Above all\, there’s Roberto Rossellini\, always present in her mind – “an imprint in the heart that lives on even when time has erased everything else”. He will return and this time will never leave … Director Monica Guerritore\, who also co-wrote the script\, plays Magnani. \nScreens as part of Italian Film Week\, a curated programme of contemporary Italian cinema presented in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Abu Dhabi.

SUMMARY:L'amore che ho: dir Paolo Licata (2025)
DESCRIPTION:A classic rags-to-riches story of a fierce\, gifted woman who rose against overwhelming odds from gruelling labour in the fields of Sicily to the most prestigious stages and huge audiences. In 1990\, the near-legendary Sicilian folk singer Rosa Balistreri was at the height of her career – but maybe also at the end of her life. As she tries everything she can to reconnect with her daughter\, Rosa’s memories of the past torment her and take her back to the most important moments of her life and work. She dedicated herself to defending the weak\, the working class\, and abused women\, and fought against every misuse of power; and at the same time\, she was close to the centre of Italian music\, theatre and art\, thanks to her encounters with the likes of Dario Fo\, Andrea Camilleri\, and Franca Rame. The title translates as ‘The love I have’; Rosa’s story reveals the soul of an extraordinary artist and the spirit of a rebel. \nThis biopic screens as part of Italian Film Week\, a curated programme of contemporary Italian cinema presented in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Abu Dhabi.

SUMMARY:100th Anniversary of Maya Plisetskaya
DESCRIPTION:Maya Plisetskaya (1925 – 2015) was a Bolshoi star as dancer and choreographer. As a dancer\, she developed “an individual\, iconoclastic style that capitalised on her electrifying stage presence” as ballet historian Tim Scholl put it. “Her very personal style was angular\, dramatic\, and theatrical … Those who saw Plisetskaya’s first performances in the West still speak of her ability to wrap the theatre in her gaze\, to convey powerful emotions in terse gestures”. Another commentator wrote that “she began by creating her own style and ended up creating her own theatre”. \nThis gala programme\, celebrating the centenary of her birth\, is danced by soloists from some of Russia’s most prestigious ballet theatres including the Bolshoi and the Mariinsky; the evening will feature pieces from her repertoire that have become part of ballet history\, the kind of technically demanding roles in which she excelled – Alberto Alonso’s Carmen Suite\, the Dying Swan\, Don Quixote; excerpts from Swan Lake\, Sleeping Beauty\, The Stone Flower\, Yakobson’s Spartacus\, Raymonda\, Walpurgis Night\, Shurale\, Laurencia; and the choreographic miniature Melody from the opera Orpheus and Eurydice.

SUMMARY:Shezad Dawood: Skin of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Shezad Dawood’s 25-year career spans painting\, textiles\, sculpture\, ceramics\, film\, performance and digital media. Fascinated by ecologies and architecture\, his work connects art\, science\, music\, environmentalism and technology to explore both alternative histories and futures\, through a process of continuous world-building expressed as an explosion of colour and multi-layered narratives; and that should make this first mid-career retrospective of the artist a must-visit. The exhibition\, which is curated by Jessica Cerasi\, features more than 40 works including painting\, sculpture\, monumental film installations\, and interactive virtual reality experiences – with more artworks being introduced gradually during the exhibition’s run\, which should repay multiple visits (it’s on till mid-September). Running alongside is a series of workshops on the themes of the exhibition. \nTo 20 September. \nAbove: Shezad Dawood\, Anselm Chapel\, Tokyo (2016)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim: Two Clouds in the Night Sky

He was part of the UAE’s first generation of contemporary artists from the late 1980s\, an avant-garde scene that included Hassan Sharif\, Abdullah Al Saadi\, Hussein Sharif\, and Mohammed Kazem. \nThis exhibition should allow for an exploration of Ibrahim’s meditative\, process-driven practice. Ibrahim’s work has been inspired by a lifelong relationship with the environment of Khorfakkan\, his place of birth. This deep connection to his local environment repeats itself throughout his studio practice\, whether through his installations\, drawings or objects\, and the materials he has worked with for over three decades.

SUMMARY:Romeo and Juliet
DESCRIPTION:This is a true classic of ballet\, and it is always danced best by a company that follows the classical tradition rigorously – which is what you traditionally get from Russian companies\, of course. This production is not from the Moscow State Ballet\, despite what the publicity claims; it is however from the Russian State Ballet Mari El\, a company based in Mari El republic; established in the early 2000s\, the company is known for its commitment to classical ballet technique and has gained a reputation for the quality and accessibility of its performances; so this one should be on the button. Music by Sergei Prokofiev\, classic choreography by Konstantin Ivanov – a former Bolshoi soloist who is the State Ballet Mari El’s creative and administrative director.
