SUMMARY:Mezzotono
DESCRIPTION:A Mezzotono concert is always engaging\, always interesting. They describe themselves as a small orchestra without instruments – just five voices\, quality singing\, and a unique style which blends vocal harmonies\, beatboxing\, and vocal percussion. They aim to cover many music styles with Italian and dialect songs (they’re Italian) from jazz to pop via mambo\, tango\, folk music\, big band jazz and classical – and all a capella. The genial stage presence is another plus\, and this is a show that should really suit the Cultural Foundation’s outdoor amphitheatre very well. Recommended\, especially at this price.

The company (and subsequently its associated School of Dance and Community Arts Partnerships) was founded in 1970 to challenging stereotypes and demonstrate the joy and celebration to be found in Latindad and Hispanic diasporas; the company tours widely – it has performed for more than 2.5 million people in three continents – and champions choreographers and dancers of all ages from the Hispanic community. “Performances by the Ballet Hispánico dancers are always vibrant and richly textured\,” said The New York Times recently; we don’t know which show they’re doing in Aby Dhabi\, but it may be the En Familia programme that a magpie fan recently saw in New York. This tour through Latin American culture and traditions featured excerpts of classics from the Company’s repertory\, including a restaging of Talley Beatty’s electrifying Recuerdo de Campo Amor. Recommended\, especially at prices starting as low as AED 100.

SUMMARY:Buika – An Evening for the Soul
DESCRIPTION:The US-based Spanish singer\, poet\, composer\, and music producer Concha Buika\, known for her characteristic fusion of flamenco with copla\, jazz\, soul\, and African polyrhythms\, brings her new show to Abu Dhabi for a one-off performance. \nShe has a stunning voice and an broad range of influences – “I understand all the musics of the world\,” she told an interviewer. “I believe I can sing in any language\, any rhythm.” Indeed\, she has duetted with everyone from Pat Metheny and Anoushka Shankar to Nelly Furtado and Seal; and she has nominations for the Latin Grammy Award Album of the Year (2008) and for Best Latin Jazz Album (in 2014\, for La Noche Más Larga). Her performances are always heartfelt\, often exciting\, and usually unmissable. Recommended.
