SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE SILA: All that is Left to You
DESCRIPTION:In times of adversity\, especially amid the ongoing devastation in Gaza\, tatreez – the ancient practice of hand-embroidery\, a foundational element of Palestinian intangible heritage – becomes an act of survival and defiance. This exhibition of works by 25 artists honours the centuries-old practice and reimagined it through a contemporary lens. Several of the featured works are the result of direct collaboration with master embroiderers from the Inaash Association\, ensuring the preservation of the authenticity and the evolving spirit of tatreez. \nThe participating artists: \nAmer Shomali\nAbdel Rahman Katanani\nAreen Hassan\nAya Haidar\nBokja\nCristiana de Marchi\nDahouk Chamsi-Pasha\nFarah Behbehani\nHazem Harb\nKatya Traboulsi\nJoanna Barakat\nLeila Jabre Jureidini\nLiane Al Ghusain\nMaysaloun Faraj\nNada Debs\nNaima Almajdobah\nnaqsh collective\nNour Hage\nOmarvis\nSama Alshaibi\nSamar Hejazi\nSamia Halaby\nTala Hammoud Atrouni\nSteve Sabella\nZaid Farouki

SUMMARY:Stitching Palestine: dir Carol Mansour (2017)
DESCRIPTION:As part of its current SILA: All That Is Left To You exhibition\, Maraya Art Centre is hosting two film screenings that extend the exhibition’s exploration of Palestinian memory\, resistance\, and cultural legacy. Carol Mansour’s documentary features 12 Palestinian women living in Lebanon\, Jordan and Palestine\, who draw upon the ancient and enduring art of Palestinian embroidery to share stories about their identities\, tales of resistance and memories of their homeland. As lawyers\, artists\, housewives\, activists\, architects and politicians\, each recounts a distinctly personal story; through the course of the film a collective embroidery begins to take shape\, linking one woman to another.

SUMMARY:The Wanted 18: dir Amer Shomali and Paul Cowan (2014)
DESCRIPTION:As part of its current SILA: All That Is Left To You exhibition\, Maraya Art Centre is hosting two film screenings that extend the exhibition’s exploration of Palestinian memory\, resistance\, and cultural legacy. The Wanted 18 is a film about a Palestinian dairy collective in Beit Sahour that hid a herd of 18 dairy cows from Israeli security forces during the First Intifada when the dairy collective was deemed a threat to Israel’s national security. The film combines animation\, interviews\, archival footage and re-enactments to tell a story of resistance and survival. \nThe screening will be preceded by a conversation with co-director Amer Shomali.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Lamya Gargash: Kun
DESCRIPTION:Through her work\, Gargash delves into spirituality\, transformation\, and the human journey. Her first solo exhibition with the Maraya Art Centre has a title – kun means ‘to be’ – that reflects the exploration of a liminal state between different phases of being\, where transitions occur from one state of mind to another; Gargash aims to create an intervention that evokes a sense of journey\, path\, and guidance and fosters a deep understanding of connectivity. This intervention will be a long gold fabric integrated into the various spaces curated by the compass and its direction; the gold fabric will drape and cover any element crossing its path\, concealing them.

SUMMARY:Sawsan Al Bahar: 33 Songs\, 99 Words
DESCRIPTION:The Dubai-based Syrian artist presents a large-scale multimedia installation with 330 printed sheets representing songs inherited from her father over the past 33 years. The songs are an obscure and highly personal collection; the patterns only reveal visual poetry and music\, thereby immortalizing the ephemerality of music and paying tribute to the power of individual and collective memory. By taking a scalpel to the lyrics and words that make up these songs\, Al Bahar dissects how we usually experience music and song; through phrases that linger\, through moments of melody\, through sequence\, form and repetition. The result gives her a sense of belonging and sensibility. \nCurated by Cima Azzam. \nTo 11 January. \n  \n
