SUMMARY:Nihad Al Turk: Creatures of Hope
DESCRIPTION:Without formal art schooling\, Nihad Al Turk has developed a distinctive visual language that blends colours\, forms\, and patterns\, “preserving his naïve sensibility while conveying his philosophical outlook and artistic vision”. His paintings typically feature anthropomorphic shapes and figures\, a form of self-portraiture that reflects Al Turk’s view on humanity and his connection with the world – “these haunting\, creature-like beings represent the complexity of our human ecosystem”. \nTo 9 May. \nAbove: Nihad Al-Turk\, Heroism (2014)

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Mouteea Murad: Exodus Through the Maze – Disorientation as Fate
DESCRIPTION:“Disorientation does not begin with the wandering mind\, but with an excess of questioning\,” says the gallery in introducing this exhibition of the Syria-born Sharjah-based artist’s most recent body of work. “In this context\, art is not considered a linear path or a complete narrative\, but rather a constantly shifting one –moving between memory\, origin\, and transformation.” \nIn Exodus through the Maze\, Murad explores art as a practice influenced by existing visuals – “derived from everyday imagery and experiences\, as well as the ongoing development of past visual languages”. The collages on display reference elements of modern and contemporary art within a new visual framework that opens the image to reinterpretation. \nTo 10 April. \nAbove: Mouteea Murad\, Trial No. 173 – The Fate of the Red Exodus I (2024)

SUMMARY:LAST CHNACE Ali Kaaf: The Fire’s Edge
DESCRIPTION:The artist’s first solo show at Ayyam Gallery features Kaaf’s seminal body of work from his Rift\, Helmet and Ras Ras series. \nThe Fire’s Edge evokes the fragile threshold where ancestral practices meet modern erasure\, the line between scorched earth and fertile soil but also the vanishing space where knowledge\, ritual\, and ecology once intertwined. Says the gallery: “the title of the exhibition suggests a meditation on disappearance and persistence\, on how destruction\, drought\, and extraction cast a shadow over the possibility of renewal …” \nWith Kaaf’s photographic works in the Ras Ras series\, the medium is manipulated by fire. The Helmet series explores the intersection of past and present via blown-glass helmets thatv evoke the fragility of memory. Much like Kaaf’s use of paper in the Rift series — a material that is both resilient and inherently delicate — glass becomes a poetic vessel for themes of endurance and vulnerability.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Elias Izoli: Inside Out ‘25
DESCRIPTION:After a long break from painting\, Izoli has returned with a new body of work centred around “the circus of life” – Izoli uses the circus as a metaphor for the unpredictability and complexity of life as a Syrian citizen. The circus and its family become a symbol of the broader social body\, with each character representing the individuals who comprise the state’s fabric \nRendered in his signature style of fragmented colours\, each portrait speaks of resilience\, illusion\, and “the spectacle of existence”. Each character is confined within their own space\, each gesture reflects the emotional weight and psychological barriers imposed by our world. The figures seem unable to escape or engage with a reality beyond their own world.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Summer Collective: Wavering Hope
DESCRIPTION:Ayyam Gallery’s summer group show celebrates and questions the current siutation in Syria with works by Kais Salman\, Khaled Takreti\, Tammam Azzam\, Abdalla Al Omari\, Othman Moussa\, Safwan Dahoul\, Thaier Helal\, Elias Izoli\, Abdul-Karim Majd Al-Beik\, Mohannad Orabi\, Nihad Al-Turk\, and Yasmine Al Awa. \nAs Ayyam marks two decades of championing Syrian contemporary art\, this exhibition provides a testament to a generation that has not only survived history\, but shaped it – as the gallery says\, “For over two decades of conflict\, displacement\, and resistance\, Syrian artists have relied on their creative practices as a lifeline. Through these practices\, they have fought against erasure\, preserved memory\, and expressed truths too heavy for language alone …” The fall of the Assad regime in December has led to a new chapter: “even in this long-awaited moment\, a deeper question surfaced: was this truly an end\, or merely the next turn in a long cycle of hope and despair?” \nThis year’s Summer Collective echoes that feeling and also reflects on Ayyam’s own journey. Through their individual visions\, the artists in the ummer Collective map the emotional\, political\, and cultural aftermath of conflict\, and the fragile hope that emerges in its wake. Says the gallery: “The show is a reminder that in Syria\, hope is rarely straightforward. It is layered with doubt\, shadowed by memory\, and always vulnerable to being undone. Yet it endures. And in the hands of these artists\, it is made visible – transformed into images\, forms\, and gestures that challenge us to remember\, to reflect\, and to imagine something beyond despair”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ahmad Kasha: Offerings – The War Series
DESCRIPTION:Ahmad Kasha’s complete War Series (2018–2025) is presented here for the first time in association with Fann à Porter. Influenced by various traditions of war art\, the series reflects on the psychological toll of violence on people\, animals\, nature\, and in the essence of art across time; Kasha has tendered this meditation on the condition of humanity in the shadow of war through arresting colour palettes and large-scale paintings which convey both fragility and overwhelming violence.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Sama Alshaibi: طرس (Tterss)
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of recent body work by one of the gallery’s stars. Alshaibi’s multimedia work explores spaces of conflict and the power struggles that reimagine Baghdad’s transformation – its peaks\, declines\, and latent possibilities. Baghdad becomes a site of physical presence and alternative visions – one that is “always mediated\, annotated\, and glimpsed through shifting thresholds” as Alshaibi puts it.

DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of recent body work by one of the gallery’s stars. Baghdad becomes a site of physical presence and alternative visions – one that is “always mediated\, annotated\, and glimpsed through shifting thresholds” as Alshaibi puts it. \nAfter 40 years\, Alshaibi returned to her homeland several times between 2021 and 2023. To reorient herself with a city she had once known more through imagination than lived experience\, she constructs an abstracted and interrupted history and reality; the Arabic title evokes the idea of a palimpsest\, a concept Alshaibi explores through the superimposed strata of imagery within her collages that immerse the city’s ruins and infrastructures into a deeper narrative of alienation. LiDAR data mapping is interwoven with photographs and archival materials to create a speculative space for understanding historical Arab cities as microcosms of broader global crises\, where past and present collide \nTo 30 May. \nAbove: Sama Alshaibi\, Duplicates (2024)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Athar Jaber: Vestiges
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition for an artist only recently signed by Ayyam Gallery. This large body of work\, an exploration of the fragile relationship between the human form and the forces that shape it\, re-imagines the human form as figures that transcend mere physical disfigurement to serve as symbolic representations of how individuals are torn apart by the weight of the world. Athar’s sculptures embody an ideal of beauty\, but their fractured state suggests that this is in fact an illusion.\nThe artist statement speaks of human forms that emerge and recede – “fragmented\, eroded\, and incomplete\, yet alive … They appear as remnants of something once whole\, as though time has worn away at them … In the absence of features\, the viewer is invited to project their own reflections of memory\, identity\, and impermanence.

SUMMARY:Artist talk: Athar Jaber
DESCRIPTION:Barjeel Art Foundation founder and noted cultural commentator Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi talks with Athar Jaber about the artist’s practice\, life\, and thoughts. Athar Jaber’s first solo show at Ayyam Gallery\, titled Vestiges\, is midway through its run (to 1 April); building on the classical notion of the mind trapped within the body\, Athar’s interesting exhibition uses the body as a metaphor for socio-political dynamics – the human form becomes a means to address power dynamics\, social structures\, and the human condition.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Thaier Helal: Navigating Through Nothing
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition featuring Helal’s most recent body of work and a pivotal moment in the artist’s evolution\, a more straightforward yet deeply expressive style without the constraints of his previous methods. The new approach\, characterized by loose\, dynamic strokes\, invites viewers to engage with the artwork instinctually; “by focusing on the expressive potential of each stroke\, he draws on the tradition of abstraction\, where the act of painting becomes a narrative in itself” as the gallery puts it.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Istoria: A Retrospective Reimagining Middle Eastern Feminism with Leila Nseir
DESCRIPTION:This retrospective for the late Syrian artist honours Leila Nseir’s legacy and celebrates her contributions to art and feminism. \nNseir’s art was rooted in humanist concerns and feminist thought\, addressing themes of conflict\, inequality\, and poverty; her career was impacted by gender persecution and patriarchal attitudes\, both within her close-knit and broader communities. “Nseir’s intentional reinterpretation of historical forms demonstrates a distinctive fusion of intimacy\, complexity\, and human suffering” says the gallery. \nShe started with sculpture but deemed it too masculine a medium. She then embarked on a long journey in painting and drawing\, but developed oil paint poisoning. Transitioning from oils to acrylics\, graphite\, pastels\, and eventually developing a unique monotype woodcut print technique\, she continued to explore and push artistic boundaries. \nNseir’s later pieces delve into the complexities of diaspora\, migration\, and the interplay between tradition and modernity. She depicted females as a mirror\, reflecting Syria and its embodiment of strength\, complexity\, and intricacy.

DESCRIPTION:A conversation between Khaled Akil and Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi supporting the Aleppo-born artist’s first solo show at the gallery. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Faisal Samra: Immortal Moment II – Coping with the Shock
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition with the second body of work from Faisal Samra’s Immortal Moment project\, artworks created through the accumulation of instances that push the viewer to question the opportunities of a single moment. In the first chapter of this project\, Faisal describes the technique as an expression of emotions; for the current show he defines the outcome as a shock; the exhibition will reveal the process of Coping with the Shock. \n“The dialogue between the abstract and figurative\, conceptually or formalistically\, is essential to Faisal’s work. Time\, being one of the most abstract ideas becomes figurative when Faisal visually notes down specific points in time through the use of charcoal and paint. The result is abstract\, but the final creation becomes figurative through several interventions\, which represent a culmination of temporal instances.” \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition that showcases works which play with perspective – “horizon lines expand outward and urban vistas are cut into parts\, interrupted like the lines of a window frame”. SUMMARY:Roshanak Aminelahi: Faces of Resilience
DESCRIPTION:The second solo exhibition for Roshanak Aminelahi at Ayyam Gallery (the first was way back in 2017) illuminates the stories of women who navigated a male-dominated society and persevered through adversity. \nThe selected women come from diverse backgrounds\, spanning different generations\, continents\, and life paths; collectively\, they embody a universal story. Roshanak highlights a multitude of defining acts of courage\, including speaking up against racism\, enforcing political and environmental activism\, and normalising female leadership. \nAnd throughout the history of art\, women have consistently been fetishised and idolised for their physical form. In this show the artist deliberately hides their appearance and focuses solely on the beauty of their achievements and character. The women are still identifiable\, proving they have established themselves by fulfilling their roles as key personas in their respective journeys. \nTo 2 January. \nAbove: Roshanak Aminelahi Georgia O’Keeffe (2023)

SUMMARY:Abdalla Al Omari: Unsuspecting State
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition featuring recent work by Abdalla Al Omari – his second solo show at the gallery\, but his first as a represented artist. \nAl Omari is clever with his use of scale and composition in representing the mundane to express themes that are everything but that: “he captures our quotidian and intimate gestures alluding to our deepest secrets and regrets\,” says the press release. “Deep beliefs and the most discrete thoughts come through when immortalising moments of everyday life. The unspoken taboos emanating through the movements\, sexuality\, religion\, and addiction\, are all part of the conversation … All along\, Abdalla plays with anonymity\, keeping things universal: The trivial and banal shared by the ordinary person.” \nTo 8 November. \nAbove: Abdalla Al Omari\, Between Before and After (2023)
