SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Fertile Dreams
DESCRIPTION:The group show brings together artists from the MENA region and its diaspora whose practices engage fertility as a generative force tied to questions of origin\, transformation\, and the cycles that govern land and self. Across drawing\, painting\, ceramics\, textiles\, and installation\, they turn to rhythmic repetition as a shared method of accessing unconscious and symbolic worlds; rooted in Surrealist philosophy yet resonant with the mystic patterns of Middle Eastern spiritual traditions\, their works open passages between body and land\, spirit and matter\, dream and physicality.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Talal Al Najjar: Mesh & Mayhem
DESCRIPTION:Talal Al Najjar’s works feel very contemporary\, not just in his use of materials and technologuy but also in his concerns and ambitions. He produces sculpture\, video\, sound\, CGI animation\, painting\, and installation\, in addition to writing and curation; his is a research-driven interdisciplinary practice that seeks to recontextualise material culture\, artefacts\, and imagery. This ‘defamiliarisation’\, overlaid with irony and seen through an absurdist lens\, prompts anthropological and material questions. Primary concerns include ideas around simulation\, postproduction\, poor images\, counter-futurisms\, and the contention of postmodern conditions. \nSays the gallery: “The exhibition confronts the way simulation infiltrates geography and biology – where the mesh becomes both structure and rupture\, at once a connective tissue and a site of collapse …”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Béchir Boussandel: Tenté par d'autres soleils (Tempted by Other Suns)
DESCRIPTION:The Dubai iteration of this show\, which is presented in collaboration with Kamel Lazaar Foundation and has previously been shown at B7L9 Art Centre in Tunis\, introduces a new body of work in blown glass – a departure from Béchir’s predominantly canvas-based practice. These works centre on the figure of the gleaner\, individuals who collect waste to survive. \nBorn in France but deeply rooted in Bizerte\, Tunisia\, Béchir works across painting\, blown glass\, metal\, and organic materials to tell stories of migration\, urban transformation\, and survival. Through a layered and symbolic approach\, he constructs a material language that feels delicate and durable. The exhibition’s title borrows from French philosopher Claire Marin: “Like migratory birds\, we are always tempted by other suns.” One can’t help but think of the gleaners (known locally as barbechas)\, those who have come from far away\, gleaning from the ground\, some still dreaming of crossing into Europe …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Hazem Harb: Not There\, Yet Felt
DESCRIPTION:Unlike earlier works that centred around collective narratives\, this new body of work from Hazem Harb is highly personal and intimate; it aims to draw the viewer into Harb’s own lived environment\, reflecting his sense of disembodiment\, a feeling of being simultaneously connected to and distanced from his home. ‘Peeling’ is a central metaphor to reveal layered memories and histories embedded within the walls of Harb’s Gaza home; through evocative collage\, neon installation\, and a poignant self-portrait\, the artist raises themes of displacement\, memory\, and our emotional and physical connections to home.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Nada Baraka and Esraa Elfeky: Across A Velvet Horizon
DESCRIPTION:A collaborative presentation of Egyptian artists Nada Baraka and Esraa Elfeky that plays on “a sense of incompleteness … Here\, history is unfixed and left open to question. Viewers are invited to sit with uncertainty\, to embrace the search even when the full picture remains tantalisingly out of reach”. Baraka’s evocative paintings and Elfeky’s tactile sculptures offer a visual narrative that blurs personal\, cultural\, and environmental histories\, occupying a space between the real and the imagined.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Adel El Siwi: Yellow Tropics
DESCRIPTION:El Siwi’s first solo exhibition in over a decade features both new paintings and pieces from an archive of earlier works: “the paintings shown here collectively present philosophical provocations and musings” says the gallery. The title references Upper Egypt and the origin of man\, but also Egypt’s literal reach towards its African neighbours\, hinting at a desire to reclaim an element of identity as part of the Continent: “it is not simply Egypt’s Islamic and Mediterranean history and culture that inform his country’s identity\, but according to El Siwi\, a longer and earlier one … A conjuring of a shared Continental history of Africa\, and a desired alignment by the artist artistically and emotionally with a greater story of identity and history\, has resulted in an oeuvre unlike many artists of his generation”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Alymamah Rashed: Mirrors from the Sidewalk
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of Alymamah Rashed’s latest work. A new series of large-scale watercolour and acrylic canvases\, it’s shaped by the belief that bodily connection to specific environments and elements can facilitate spiritual awakening. Rashed reflects on the immersion of the body in water\, soil and sky\, embracing floral elements and the everyday objects that she collects from the sidewalks of her hometown Kuwait.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Randa Maddah: Hanging Gardens
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural solo exhibition of the Syrian visual artist whose practice spans painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, video\, and installation. In this recent work\, Maddah repurposes the vocabulary of traditional miniature paintings to depict “dream-like scenes that negotiate themes of belonging\, resilience\, rootedness\, rebirth\, and renewal through natural elements … The work embodies the notion of a spirit shaped by harsh and absurd realities\, exploring themes of ecstasy\, liberation\, and reincarnation … Reflecting on transcendence and rebirth\, Maddah suggests that the body is merely a garment the soul sheds to wear anew\, offering hope that death is simply a gateway to a new life”.

\nTo 1 November.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Miramar Al Nayyar: Moving Through the Ether
DESCRIPTION:A collection of abstract figurative works on canvas\, “inviting viewers into a realm of recognition and constant metamorphosis … Each 190 x 120cm canvas serves as a conduit for Miramar’s endeavour to encapsulate the essence of the natural formations of the desert. Eschewing representation\, Miramar aims to distil the essence of these natural phenomena that also lie within natural movement; her bodily movement\, onto her canvases —the intricate textures\, lifeforms\, and undulating terrain—evoking a sense of abstracted organic forms.”

SUMMARY:Hazem Harb: Gauze
DESCRIPTION:A solo show by the Palestinian visual artist\, curated by Munira Al Sayegh\, which “invites viewers to explore the profound connections between material\, the body\, the context and the artist’s personal journey as a Gazan native in exile”. \nGauze offers insight into the multifaceted significance of the titular material within Palestinian collective histories; Harb’s connection with it dates back to his childhood in Gaza\, when he used gauze as an artistic medium akin to canvas. Decades later\, Harb revisits gauze as a medium in this new body of work that reflects on his early works with gauze\, exploring the transformative power of reflection and imagination in charting an emancipatory future. \nTo 15 February. \n  \n
