SUMMARY:Quoz Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Quoz Arts Fest returns to Alserkal Avenue on 24 and 25 January with a mix of experimental art installations\, live music\, exhibitions\, “food experiences”\, and “encounters designed for all ages”. Basmah El Bittar\, Director of Alserkal Avenue\, reckons the 2026 Quoz Fest highlights the depth of regional talent – “artists whose work reflects the pulse\, perspective and creative energy of the region … local artisans whose craft and culinary expressions shape the cultural fabric of the festival …” \nThere’s no theme as such\, but the press release says “this edition foregrounds practices that invite movement\, collective listening\, and new modes of engaging with art in public spaces\, transforming the neighbourhood into a space for sound\, gesture\, and shared experience”. Which could cover just about any festival with a performance and visual art component\, but hey … \nMusic\nThis year’s music programme is led by the Palestinian hip-hop collective DAM and Gayathri Krishnan on Saturdays\, Lebanese singer-songwriter Yasmine Hamdan (indie-Arabic royalty) plus TootArd (below) on Sunday. Throughout the weekend\, Stage 2.0 offers a dedicated platform for the emerging and less well known\, a “space for experimentation\, exchange\, and new collaborations” as the blurb has it. \n \nThe Fridge Warehouse is also running two days of evening shows – Serena & The Velvet Chords and Calista Liaw on Saturday\, Imelda Gabs and Hosny on Sunday – with Open Mic slots between sets for new talent to showcase their work (if you’re interested there are still some slots available\, we hear). \nArt\nFrom the Lips to the Moon (below) is a “collaborative sonic journey” created for the festival by Pouya Ehsaei and Tara Fatehi – an immersive soundscape shaped by voice\, gesture\, and improvisation. And Jean-Baptiste André will present Floe\, a nomadic project bringing together a visual installation designed by Vincent Lamouroux that sets as a stage for a choreographed performance. \n \nThe biggie is Numen/For Use’s TAPE project at Concrete (top). This is a series of site-specific cocoon-like structures shaped through self-forming processes inspired by patterns found in nature – each installation begins as a set of linear trajectories stretched across the space\, before being diagonally wrapped in layers of elastic tape. Says the PR: “these installations dissolve the boundaries between sculpture and architecture\, turning viewers into participants and space into a shared organism …” This is the project’s first time in Dubai\, but it has been presented successfully in more than 10 cities around the world. \nCommunity et al\nJossa at Warehouse 45 has activity zones with fun soft structures for kids\, Mawaheb has a multimedia presentation of works by adults of determination\, and the Reel Palestine souk returns with 50+ vendors selling crafts and food rooted in Palestinian heritage. And there will be many curated pop-ups\, warehouse takeovers\, and “neighbourhood culinary concepts” across the lanes. \nExtras\nAlongside the ‘official’ programme (which you get in return for your entrance fee of AED 100 per day – no\, theren’t any discount if you buy a two-day pass) many of the Avenue’s regular venues are putting on shows of their own (with separate\, and therefore additional\, ticketing). They include Cinema Akil with Reel Palestine screenings starting this weekend\, and the Junction is running three fringe-ish shows (Hold on to your Butts\, La Lezione di Teatro | The Acting Class and Fly\, You Fools!) perhaps as a precursor to the fully-fledged fringe festival it plans to bring to Al Quoz later this year.

DESCRIPTION:Alserkal Art Week returns 17-25 November. As usual many of the galleries will be opening new shows during the week (we count ten: they’re listed separately in the Agenda)\, but the Alserkal Avenue people have been developing a programme themselves to provide lots more reasons to visit the Avenue – screenings\, performances\, open studios\, symposia\, workshops\, and slow art walks. This year there is a theme\, ‘Acts of Presence’\, to emphasise “the importance of togetherness and connection amidst an increasingly divided world”. \nOur pickouts:\nMade Present: Biographies of Artworks Defying the Ongoing Nakba Curated by Faris Shomali and Zaina Zarour\, this ‘research exhibition’ charts the survival of over ten Palestinian artworks\, foregrounding the extensive history of artists who have gone to great lengths to ensure their works remain visible. “While the history of Palestine’s art is often depicted as one of loss\, fragmentation\, colonial plunder\, and destruction\, this exhibition offers an alternative historiography – one in which these artworks defy attempts at erasure.” Warehouse 50\, details here. \nWalk With Me: Public Art Commissions Now in its second iteration\, this series of site-specific public art commissions (curated by Zoé Whitley and presented by Alserkal Arts Foundation) sited around the Avenue are intended to reflect on fragility\, resilience\, and public memory. There are four artists with work on show: Dima Srouji\, Asma Belhamar\, Abbas Akhavan and Vikram Divecha. Information here\, and there’s a tour of the works at 4pm on 17 November led by Whitley\, Divecha and Belhamar; free\, but register for a place here. \nSlow art walks A thoughtful amble through exhibitions\, public art\, and hidden corners of the Avenue. There are two\, both on 23 November; one at 4pm with writer/curator Yalda Bidshahri\, the other at 5pm with Priyanka Mehra of Ishara Art Foundation. We’re not sure where these start – A4 space is usually a good bet – and they don’t seem to need preregistration. \nMajlis Talks This edition of Majlis Talks is entitled ‘Acts of Presence: Stories of Africa’s Creative Leaders’. Curated by Charlotte Ashamu\, it is a series of four discussions and demonstrations with alternative voices from Ghana\, Ethiopia\, South Africa\, and Côte d’Ivoire. 17 November\, 5.30-7pm; free\, but register here. \nDomestic Departures: (Im)mobility\, loss and resilience in an uncertain world Recipients of Alserkal Arts Foundation Research Grants 2022-2024 present multidisciplinary projects that address permanence and belonging via conversations and research displays with six practitioners – Khalda El Jack\, Zainab Gaafar\, Lubnah Ansari\, Natasha Maru\, Rhea Shah\, and Maitha AlSuwaidi – using experimental cartography\, immersive installations\, and independent zines. On 23 November\, 2-6pm at Jossa by Alserkal; free\, but register here. \nOpen Studios Alserkal Arts Foundation will also be opening the studios of its current residents – sound artist Jad Saliba\, writer and visual artist Sinzo Aanza\, academic researcher and mixed-media artist Thlana Bazik\, and filmmaker Pallavi Paul. Warehouse 50. \nOur Future(s) This “immersive experience” presented by the Dubai Future Foundation and Museum of the Future\, invites visitors to contemplate our collective futures via an installation that engages audiences through key statements and delicate sound whispers\, representing the uncertainties that shape our shared future. “Through this reflective space\, the Foundation aims to better understand public sentiment\, helping to shape informed strategies and innovative solutions for a more resilient and sustainable world.” Warehouse A1\, information here. \nDissuader: Art and Design This exhibition of work by the Italian designer and artist Franco Perrotti is another collaboration with partners\, in this case the Gieffe Group and Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi. Central to the exhibition is Dissuader\, a monumental allegorical pigeon sculpted from stainless steel and birchwood\, symbolising the complex dynamics between humans and their environment. DESCRIPTION:Alserkal Avenue is being taken over for this weekend’s evenings by a food festival involving the Avenue’s own F&B outlets and a mass of invited incomers. Should be good – and the highlight of the first evening will probably be a live gig from Jindi. Born and raised in the UAE\, the award-winning Sudanese singer/songwriter has crafted a distinctive and highly danceable take on Afrobeat. He’s known for his electrifying live performances\, so this al fresco intro to his new album Reign and Fire should make for a great evening; “across the album\, Jindi’s ability to traverse diverse cultures shines through a fusion of genres\, from RnB and Dancehall to Afrobeat\, creating a global resonance” opines the PR blurb. In magpie’s view the standout track is HASSA\, created with top Nigerian producer MasterKraft. He’s on at 7pm and we’re promised an hour or so from him; otherwise there will be DJs\, including The Flip Side’s Shadi Megallaa

DESCRIPTION:Alserkal Lates takes place in the middle of Alserkal Art Week\, so there should be more than two dozen exhibitions in Avenue galleries open till 10pm (half of them taking the opportunity to open on the night) – with the chance to see art but also to chat with curators\, artists and artsworld movers ‘n’ shakers. There will be scheduled artist- and curator-led tours of some of the exhibitions\, too\, which is always going to be interesting. \nAlso opening is This is Not Your Grave\, a new commission by Dima Srouji that marks the return of Alserkal’s programme of public art commissions for 2024. This edition is curated by the American art historian and gallery curator Zoé Whitley under the umbrella title ‘Walk With Me’; apparently she was particularly struck by Alserkal Avenue’s accessibility and cultural and experiential offerings for audiences on foot rather than by car; the 2024-25 commissions will be “ambitious new works whose expressive modes make concepts physically palpable\, immediately relatable and widely accessible. Dima Srouji will lead a guided tour of This is Not Your Grave at 11.30am on 28 February. \nWhitley has also curated the Majlis Talks programme\, running from 4pm under the umbrella title Let the beauty we love be what we do. DESCRIPTION:Quoz Arts Fest returns for its 11th edition\, filling Alserkal Avenue with music\, food and family-friendly fun for two days. \nThe Quoz Encore stage for emerging musicians of all ages and backgrounds is back\, and in total there are more than 200 live performances and other “cultural activations” by artists from the region (including crowd favourite Big Hass and magpie favourite Noon) and beyond – like the Sudanese fusion duo MarSimba and RUST (aka Hani Manna and Petra Hawi) from Lebanon; the Tanzanian-born performance artist Dipesh Pandya will have a live performance and installation transforming a car into a sonic sculpture via spoken word specifically written in response to the Al Quoz neighbourhood; and there’s a participatory interactive sound environment at Concrete by the London-based Japanese artist Yuri Suzuki. \nYou want some intellectual underpinning too? “Quoz Arts Fest hopes to tap into the inherent relativity of time with a unique and layered experience for every single visitor by creating unexpected stories\, producing different rhythms\, and curating playful displays.” \nQuoz Arts Fest also includes a series of all-day markets\, installations\, and workshops; and there will be plenty of F&B there to ease your day. For kids there are art workshops\, a pop-up DJ school\, and other activities and performances. \nThe two-day Weekend Pass is a modest enough AED 63 (over 60s and under 18s go free) and we think you can get a one-day pass for half of that. DESCRIPTION:This year’s Alserkal Art Week runs from Monday 20 November to Sunday 26 November at Alserkal Avenue. It’s been refocussed at short notice on Gaza and related issues\, in particular with a major exhibition in Concrete. The full programme is here\, but we’ve picked out some highlights; most events are free but many require preregistration because space will be limited. \n\n20 Nov 5pm to 10pm Alserkal Lates \nThere are more than 15 new gallery exhibitions across the Avenue staying open into the evening\, along a couple of guest galleries which will be open for the week – Gazelli Art House in warehouse 45\, Iris Projects in warehouse46. (We have these listed individually by exhibition name in the Agenda.) The residents of the Fall 2023 cycle at Alserkal Arts Foundation will also be hosting open studios\, and the retail and F&B outlets will be open late\, too. Alserkal Lates is always a pleasure. \n\n20-26 Nov 10am to midnight On This Land  \nA “triangulated response” by the Palestinian Museum\, Barjeel Art Foundation\, and Alserkal Arts Foundation\, this exhibition actually opens at 6pm on the evening before; it brings together the digital archive of The Palestinian Museum and works from the Barjeel Art Foundation’s collection with the aim of “harnessing the power of spontaneous collaboration not only to protect what is being silenced\, but to generate a triangulated and amplified response … [the exhibition] opens an unexpected window onto Gaza to prompt a collective imagination of a possible future through the prism of a past made manifest.”. There are guided tours of the exhibition at 3.30pm every day. \n\n20 Nov 5pm 6pm 7pm | 25 Nov 7.30pm 8.30pm | 26 Nov 6pm 7pm Slow art walks \nReflective gallery tours that last about an hour; a really successful way to see the galleries – interesting\, informative\, unstressy. \n\n20 Nov 9-10pm Farha \nDirected by Darin J. Sallam\, this coming-of-age film was based on a true story of a 14-year-old girl caught up in the events of the nabka. Screens in The Yard courtesy of Cinema Akil. \n\n20 and 26 Nov 7pm RHYME: Sima Dance Company  \nA 30-minute performance described as “a theatrical laboratory” and choreographed by Sima’s artistic director Alaa Krimed\, RHYME shows Arab and Eastern culture heritage through an artistic lens. Music\, narration and movement “translates its melodic and experimental character in a dynamic performance”. \n\n22 Nov 7.30-9pm Gaza Mon Amour \nDirected by Arab & Tarzan Nasser\, this film was Palestine’s official submission to the Oscars in 2019; based on a true story\, it’s a charming\, reflective film about 60-year-old Gazan fisherman Issa and his secret love for the dressmaker Siham. Screens in The Yard courtesy of Cinema Akil. \n\n23 Nov 4pm to 6.30pm Majlis Talks \nTitled Fierce Grace\, curated by Mari Spirito of Protocinema\, these five 30-minute sessions will see conversations with curator Duygu Demir\, artist Stéphanie Saadé\, artist Marianne Fahmy\, and author Kaya Genc. Topics range from attention to the overlooked details of life (like the skin cells left on our phone’s touch screen)\, to unlearning social conditioning\, futurism on rising seas\, invisibility as a means of survival\, and interconnecting across geographies. \n\n25 Nov 8pm-9.10pm Foragers \nShot in the Golan Heights\, the Galilee and Jerusalem\, Jumana Manna’s film uses fiction\, documentary and archival footage to depict the dramas around the traditional practice of foraging for wild edible plants\, deploying wry humour and a meditative pace to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs. DESCRIPTION:This is the second edition of a festival that described itself as “the point of intersection between art\, technology and the community … The main goal is to attract and create a community of open minded artists\, scientists\, and tech experts to come together and share knowledge”. It also aims to promote an alternative to “the ‘entertainment-only’ lifestyle in Dubai”. \nThat was for the original festival\, which ran back in 2022 with some success. The upcoming version tomes down the rhetoric somewhat but retains a strapline of ‘arts / technology / science’ and adds an overlay of community. The UAE is seen as “a special ecosystem in which people and their culture\, tools\, and relationship with nature form a special alliance … This raises the question of how this complex life situation can be artistically reflected and what artistic forms of expression and tools can emerge from it … The contemporary form of media art\, which engages with a society shaped by new technologies and the associated risks and opportunities\, is presented …” \nThe organisers say their goal is to promote a local artistic community through this future-oriented art form” “inspired by the dynamics of the region’s unique circumstances\, a distinct dialectic of media art will emerge”. \nSounds impressive\, and at the very least Festival X should stimulate thought if not action. It runs for three days in Alserkal Avenue\, with Exhibitions of curated installations and projects with the title  ‘From the past we love\, to the future we need’ in Alserkal Avenue’s Concrete and Warehouse 46; a couple of Workshops; Performances in the evening on all three days; and a short programme of panel discussions. \nThe workshops are by new media artist Amir Bastan (“An Astrolabe for Computational Arts”\, 10am on all three days) and James Kelly from NYUAD (active sound researcher/performer\, vinyl enthusiast\, and responsible for the interesting Phonography show back in February; his workshop is repeated on two days only). The performance schedule also looks interesting – they include a total of five sessions by James Kelly again\, immersive AV installations from Italian artist Michela Pelusio\, soundscapes by Safeya Alblooshi from NYUAD\, and the very cool Sahar Homami who creates real-time visual content “at the intersection of art\, technology\, philosophy\, and mysticism”. \nThe panels and presentations look to be more of a mixed bag\, with a Keynote session on two days followed by a panel. The keynotes are two hours of bite-size contributions from individuals and organisations apparently without a specific theme\, and they range from educational institutions like DIDI\, VCUarts Qatar\, and NYUAD through local business-oriented organisations like PwC Middle East and Dubai Economy & Tourism to thought leaders Ars Electronica and Alserkal Avenue (the original inspiration for Festival X does apparently come largely from Ars Electronica\, an Austrian new media art institute which also runs a similar “festival for art\, technology and society“). \nThat leaves two panels\, both of which seem to us to be a little underserved timewise and slightly baffling in their choice of subject. There’s only 45 minutes for the first\, ‘How to Create a Connection Between Tradition\, Innovation and Vision’ with which has contributions from Ars Electronica\, Alserkal Avenue\, Dubai Future Foundation\, Dubai Department of Economy & Tourism Dubai\, and PwC MiddleEast. The moderator is Olof Van Winden\, Founder and Director of TodaysArt Festival (maybe we’ll get to hear whether the Festival will be returning in its original format). And on the final day there’s what looks like another meaty topic with only an hour allowed for it; we think the subject is ‘The University Portal: Fast Forward To The Future And Back’\, which makes sense given that the panellists come from all those educational bodies (with Amir Bastan as moderator)\, but elsewhere in the website it’s listed as ‘How Media Artists Can Shape the Future’. \nThe best news is that it’s all free\, though you do have to pre-register for individual sessions presumably to give the organisers a chance to manage numbers. \n

DESCRIPTION:The new season’s first open-all-evening mini-festival at Alserkal Avenue. It’s the mix as before\, only more so – the galleries are staying open late\, most with brand new shows\, and so are the eateries and coffee shops. But added to that is a collection of “soundscapes\, multimedia exhibitions\, and live music performance” for “an evening of cultural discovery”. \nThis year the Yard will be home to new botanical and architectural features – greening by Zain Masud\, architecture by T.Sakhi – to celebrate local craftsmanship and rediscover native plants. A specially commissioned soundscape by Safeya Alblooshi (“an immersive sonic creation that intricately weaves together the past\, present\, and potential future of The Yard”) will also be revealed on the night. \nProgramming will take place throughout the evening with free music from the rather good The Tasty Biscuits performing in The Yard at 7pm and the excellent Majaz in The Fridge Warehouse at 8.30pm; a series of Slow Art Walks touring around some of the art exhibitions; the oldest waterhole cam in Africa (Djuma Private Game Reserve) and the world Wild Earth on the Yard’s new screens; and a world music-Arabic Folk open venue concert at The Fridge.
