DESCRIPTION:Cinema has always been very interested in itself. In Cédric Kahn’s Making of we are introduced to a movie\, a story about workers fighting to protect their factory from being relocated. And we meet a variety of characters involved in it – there is the director (Denis Podalydes) who can’t seem to get everything into place\, the producer (Emmanuelle Bercot) who wants to rewrite the ending and cut the budget\, the veteran lead actor (Jonathan Cohen) who is a diva on set\,and the budding director (Stefan Crepon) who has been commissioned to shoot a behind-the-scenes ‘making of’ documentary. \nThe result makes for a satisfyingly complex fly-on-the-wall comedy\, with a large ensemble cast of French actors having fun with the long list of roles. There’s a nod to social topics too; the issues discussed in the film-within-a-film – underpaid workers\, torn labourers\, possibilities of losing work – all mirror the stressed film crew trying to just finish this production. DESCRIPTION:Alan Delon is Marc\, a petty criminal on the run from American gangsters\, who seeks refuge in a mission for the poor where wealthy widow Barbara (Lola Albright) hires him as her chauffeur and moves him to her Riviera château. Barbara’s niece (Jane Fonda) becomes attracted to Marc\, but then it gets complicated: Barbara is hiding her lover Vincent\, a bank robber sought by the police for murdering her husband\, and they’re planning to murder Marc for his passport … and the gangsters have got wind of Marc’s whereabouts. There are bodies … \nThe film is satisfyingly twisted\, almost film noir in its plotting but defiantly European in style.  It’s in French with English subtitles; the screening will be followed by a discussion with Hind Mezaina (who’s curating this season for AF). \nThe price incidentally is for non-members; for AF members it’s free.

DESCRIPTION:Daniel Roby’s film has a Parisian couple whose daughter suffers from an incurable disease that forces her to live in a hermetically sealed glass bubble. Then a mysterious toxic fog begins to spread in the Parisian streets\, killing anyone who gets caught in it. The parents find shelter on the roof above the mist\, but the daughter is still in her bubble in the now fog-filled apartment … Her parents must now cope with the lack of food\, power\, and information\, but the bubble won’t hold forever so they also need an escape plan … \n\n\nThe film is well directed throughout and has some strong set pieces\, managing along the way to avoid most of the trite conventions of sci-fi or the usual survivalist story; the characters are sensible and likeable – Romain Duris\, Olga Kurylenko and Fantine Harduin are the leads – and the storyline builds to a strong climax. And is it a warning sign? Well\, the source of the toxic fog is never explained; Paris is a city that has seen an alarming increase in air pollution and toxicity rates over the past years. That’s because without the bees’ pollinating work\, agriculture could collapse and with it our ability to feed ourselves. \nWell\, all over the world bees have been dying for the past few years. Although the causes for this are still a mystery\, one thing is already clear: there is more at stake than simply a few dead insects\, and a great deal more than just honey. Imhoof’s documentary takes us on a journey to meet some of the people and places whose existence depends on bees – a Swiss beekeeper in the Alps\, the gigantic almond plantations of California\, a bee brain researcher in Berlin\, a pollen trader in China. His directorial style is laid back; there’s no hectoring here\, we can draw our own conclusions.
