SUMMARY:POSTPONED March Meeting 2026
DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual convening of artists\, curators\, scholars and arts practitioners from around the world to discuss issues in contemporary art focuses this time on effective responses to global challenges in social unrest\, environmental degradation\, systemic erasure and alienation. \nThrough panels\, keynotes\, conversations and performances\, participants will examine how historical entanglements of language\, geography\, economy and social organisation shape our present. How can kinship\, memory and humour sustain connection even as shared stories fracture or fade? What forms of transmission – oral\, visual\, sonic\, literary\, archival – can trace the movement of knowledge and experience between people and places? \nThe March Meeting is always interesting and often insightful; there aren’t many equivalent symposia anywhere in the world (especially when attendance is free).  The provisional programme is here.

SUMMARY:Another City is Possible: Mediating Architecture
DESCRIPTION:For the next event in its SAT03 public programme\, Sharjah Architecture Triennial presents a conversation on reimagining the city and the possibilities of architecture beyond its conventional boundaries. \nLed by Vyjayanthi Rao and Tau Tavengwa\, Curator and Associate Curator of SAT03\, the discussion will be moderated by Kenneth Bailey\, Co-founder of Design Studio for Social Intervention (DS4SI)\, an organisation that works on rebuilding public spaces to be more equitable and vibrant. \nThe conversation will look at the way urban space is produced not only through buildings and infrastructure\, but also through social relations\, narrative and cultural practice – which essentially is the conceptual framework of Architecture Otherwise\, theme of the SAT03 Triennial.

SUMMARY:Luis Guenel Soto and Ebana Garin Coronel: Minga of a House in Ruins
DESCRIPTION:This performance\, part of the Perform Sharjah performance programme\,  centres around the Chilean tradition of ‘minga’ – the communal act of moving an entire house\, seen as a gesture of collective labour and shared resilience. Through three interwoven stories\, Minga of a House in Ruins delves into the meaning of home and whether we can build an alternative future out of the ruins of a world seemingly coming to an end. In this intimate encounter\, ruins are not simply remnants of destruction but living spaces of resistance\, where community\, imagination and care come together to affirm life in the shadow of collapse. Through movement\, sound and silence\, the work transforms decay into possibility\, showing how bodies and voices can rebuild\, even if only for a fleeting moment\, what has been lost …

SUMMARY:Reminiscencia
DESCRIPTION:The second (and final) performance of this piece by the Chilean artist Malicho Vaca Valenzuela. Confined to his home during the Covid lockdown of 2020\, he sat down in front of his computer and began collecting memories from the residents of Santiago. His goal was to tell the story of his neighbourhood\, a vibrant area in the heart of the Chilean capital; his social media request for testimonies and personal memories about public spaces received numerous responses\, and at the same time his grandparents started to share their own memories with him\, their stories intertwining with the others. In this country “where there are immense blue skies in which one can read but where one doesn’t know what is hidden in the ground\,” the director digs into the earth: a simple click on a digital map and he uncovers mysterious loves and repressed revolutions\, so many fragments of an intimate and collective memory. Audience members are invited to quit chasing time and listen to the voices within them\, to cling to what may still remain of a memory. \nReminiscencia is part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Perform Sharjah programme.

SUMMARY:A Journey into Architecture Archives: Beirut\, Cairo\, Rabat
DESCRIPTION:A Sharjah Architecture Triennial exhibition\, curated by architect George Arbid\, that highlights three institutions in the Arab world that hold and preserve key regional architecture archives – the Arab Center for Architecture (ACA) in Beirut (co-founded by Arbid)\, the Rare Books and Special Collections at the American University in Cairo (AUC)\, and Archives du Maroc in Rabat. \nAs well as with preserving the memory of completed buildings\, the archives also have stories of designs that never came to fruition– and a highlight of the exhibition is a focus on five abandoned projects\, brought to life through drawings and models. Also on view: three documentaries commissioned specifically for the exhibition and filmed in Beirut\, Cairo\, Rabat and Casablanca. \nThe exhibition opens with a panel discussion (4-6pm) with guest speakers Amel Chabbi\, Zahra Ali Baba and Suha Hasan\, moderated by George Arbid; he’ll then lead a tour of the exhibition. \nAll Sharjah Architecture Triennial events are free and open to the public but capacity is limited and advance registration is required.
