DESCRIPTION:Second of near-jazz gigs on consecutive nights at Al Noor Island. This one features Ars Nova Napoli (below)\, the Italian nu-folk funsters (traditional Neapolitan rhythms with a modern twist) who really do know how to throw a party; and the Cuban cellist\, singer and composer Ana Carla Maza (top)\, hailed as one of Latin America’s most promising young jazz talents for her blend of Latin jazz\, bossa nova and tango. Highly recommended. \nPerformances start at 8.30pm\, but doors open at 6pm and there are free guided tours of the island and the chance to sample the F&B – the organisers suggest “you arrive early to enjoy the tours and pre-event experiences\, as spaces are limited”. Single-night tickets are AED 130\, but there’s a both-gigs deal at AED 225.

Brothers Samir\, Wissam\, and Adnan Joubran\, originally from Nazareth and now dividing their time between Nazareth\, Ramallah and Paris\, will happily admit to gathering musical influences anywhere they can find them; but the results through several CDs and many spectacular performances are never less than potently nationalistic in their intent. “The Trio Joubran talents as musicians are complemented by their compassion as human beings\,” wrote Brian Eno. “Their longstanding and determined commitment has made them a symbol of Palestinian identity and resistance. Trio Joubran\, in its brilliant and fiery exuberance\, sends out a message: Palestine is alive.” \n

DESCRIPTION:Jazz under the stars on Sharjah’s Al Noor Island – though again we’re not sure either artist would regard themselves as characteristic of (or confined to) the jazz genre. The Dubai-based Serbian singer\, songwriter\, pianist and composer Aleksandra Krstic has performed in a classical\, jazz\, funk\, soul and pop styles\, both solo and in bands; she’s also worked as a recording artist with jazz and electronic music artists. She has a nice sultry voice for self-accompanied Ella Fitzgerald style jazz. DESCRIPTION:Jazz under the stars on Sharjah’s Al Noor Island – though the evening might be stretching the definition of ‘jazz’. The headliners are Mezzotono\, the Italian a cappella five-voice group with a unique style which blends vocal harmonies\, beatboxing\, and vocal percussion. They aim to cover many music styles from jazz to pop via mambo\, tango\, folk music (especially Italian – they’re from Italy)\, big band jazz and classical. And the Franco-Algerian singer\, songwriter and cellist Nesrine (above) is another breaker of genre boundaries\, usually employing a unique lineup of voice\, cello\, and percussion to deliver a musical fusion that spans the Mediterranean region from North Africa to Southern Europe. \nWhatever the definitions\, though\, this is an evening that we’d highly recommend. \nThe schedule: \n4-5pm Tour of the island and the Butterfly House\n5-5.30pm Vocal jazz workshop with Mezzotono (included in the ticket price\, we think\, but first come first served)\n6-7pm Performance by Sens8tion (Sharjah Performing Arts Academy dance troupe)\n7-8.30pm Interval for dinner\n8.30-9.30pm Mezzotono\n9.30-10.30pm Nesrine \nThe AED 100 ticket price buys you entry to the music\, but there’s also a 250 AED option which includes dinner before the main acts; and a AED 450 deal for entry on both nights including dinner.
