Khalaf\u2019s dreaming energy gives steel junk \u2013 bulldozers, vehicles, surveillance cameras \u2013 an chance for self-reinvention; it confronts the machine with its own existence, giving it a tragic form and allowing it reposition itself over time. The garbage bins in Protective Shield were used during the First Intifada to block street and provide shelter from bullets ; in contrast, the colonial system used steel barrels filled with cement to seal off the entrances to villages and camps.<\/p>\n
