{"id":47623,"date":"2023-09-13T12:22:49","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T08:22:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magpie.ae\/staging4\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=47623"},"modified":"2023-09-13T13:32:08","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T09:32:08","slug":"vantage-point-sharjah-vps-11","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/magpie.ae\/staging4\/event\/vantage-point-sharjah-vps-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Vantage Point Sharjah (VPS 11)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sharjah Art Foundation\u2019s annual photography exhibition returns for its 11th edition, featuring artists \u201cwhose work challenges established notions of photographic practices\u201d \u2013 four individuals and one collective, chosen through an international open call that received more than 350 applications.<\/p>\n<p>This year VPS identifies and supports early-career photographers from Africa and Asia (those who were born there, who are currently based there, or who are part of the diaspora). \u201cThe selected artists embody diverse approaches but share overlapping tendencies,\u201d say the organisers, citing \u201cthe pursuit of contemporary image-making techniques, the recontextualisation of found or inherited images and engagement with the visual afterlives of colonialist legacies\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Oumaima Abaraghe<\/strong> (b.1999, Casablanca) uses collage techniques and digital manipulation to reconstruct Morocco\u2019s fragmentary colonial archive, signalling its inherent fallibility<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yashna Kaul<\/strong> (b.1995, Mumbai) unearths the secrets embedded in her family\u2019s photo album and reveals how the framing of a moment can shape personal histories and collective memory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mohamed Mahdy<\/strong> (b.1996, Giza) uses emotive storytelling to document the displacement of the fishing community of El Maks, Alexandria, and captures the generational impact of urban redevelopment policies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clea Rekhou<\/strong> (b.1988, Paris) contrasts a series of soft-lit, intimate family portraits with narratives of generational violence, suggesting the complexity of human relationships.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Postbox Ghana<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>Nana Ofosu Adjei<\/strong> (b.1993, Accra), <strong>Courage Dzidula Kpodo<\/strong> (b.1999, Kumasi) and <strong>Manuela Nebuloni<\/strong> (b.1986, Milan) \u2013 resituate popular postcard images of post-independence Ghana within the country\u2019s contemporary urban landscape and question the aspirations of nation-state imagery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Works by these emerging artists will be displayed in two exhibition modes: independent presentations of the artists\u2019 individual practices and a communal storytelling space that interweaves their combined practices.<\/p>\n<p>VPS 11 also introduces a one-on-one professional mentoring programme.
