SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Mohamed Monaiseer: 85 Seconds To Midnight
DESCRIPTION:Monaiseer’s solo show examines history through cycles\, repetition and flows\, while testing the unstable boundary between imagination and reality. The title references the current status of the Doomsday Clock and its measurement of humanity’s proximity to catastrophe; notions of war\, occupation and imperial power have long animated his practice\, and here he considers how they recur across contexts and generations\, altering borders\, enemies and technologies while preserving familiar structures of domination. \nThe exhibition comprises drawings\, paintings\, sculptures and textile works\, as well as a video installation. Recurring motifs in these works are absorbed from literary fiction\, popular storytelling and contemporary media. And dark humour runs through them; for Monaiseer it is a means of examining the performance of power and the fantasies through which conflict can be romanticised\, rehearsed and projected. \nElsewhere\, pixelated figures and fragmented grids evoke the digital mediation of contemporary warfare and our era of misinformation\, in which information is increasingly manipulated and corrupted online. Monaiseer has previously engaged with the historical construction of conflict; in these works he considers how conflict reaches us through technology\, through compressed images\, screens\, news feeds and endlessly circulating footage\, producing realities that are experienced at a distance and often manipulated.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Habeeb Abu-Futtaim: The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia and Songs in Solitude
DESCRIPTION:Two interconnected exhibitions\, both curated by Mo Reda and supported by the Department of Painting and Printmaking at VCUarts Qatar. Together\, The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia and Songs in Solitude mark the culmination of a two-month residency at Bayt AlMamzar; they present several different bodies of work developed over the past ten years\, drawing from an artistic practice shaped by sustained research\, investigation\, and critical inquiry. \nWorking across painting\, installation\, performance\, video\, and writing\, Abu-Futtaim investigates the construction and performance of collective identities\, examining how inherited symbols\, political imaginaries\, and cultural narratives become internalized as expressions of belonging. Songs in Solitude reflects on the intimate space of artistic practice through playfulness\, imagination\, intimacy\, and selfhood; The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia turns outward to examine the inherited performances of collective identity and the burden of unrealized political futures. Between them the exhibitions move between the personal and the political\, revealing how solitude\, memory\, and collective imagination continually shape one another.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Global Positioning System
DESCRIPTION:An ambitious large-scale group exhibition dedicated to mapping and navigation systems\, “telling stories of fast cars and donkeys\, spinning globes and street barricades\, cosmic highways and broken bridges … [it] delves into topographies\, transit lines and simulated landscapes to engage critically with the infrastructure of movement and navigation”. Set against real and imagined geographies and landscapes\, the exhibition asks questions about the infrastructures that enable transport and trade\, the promises of speed and progress\, the meaning of home\, and what ‘navigation’ means when the destination is not a place but a memory … It is curated by Indranjan Banerjee and Lucas Morin (both exhibition curators at the Jameel) and features 30 artists. A second ‘chapter’ of the exhibition runs at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah to 26 October featuring 22 artists – a third of whom are from the Dubai roster\, with new names making up the balance.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s popular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat.

SUMMARY:The Amy Winehouse Band
DESCRIPTION:It’s 20 years since Back to Black was released\, so there’s a reasonable hook for this performance by “the original musicians who performed alongside Amy on stages around the world and helped shape her distinctive sound both live and in the studio”. The show is organised by Dale Davis\, Amy Winehouse’s longtime bassist (he’s credited on some of Back to Black) and sometime musical director. We’re promised “an unforgettable celebration of Amy’s timeless songbook” with the Amy role going to “a powerful female vocalist personally selected by Dale Davis”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Hamad Almuzaini: Precarious Beings
DESCRIPTION:“What is the ultimate goal of a city?” asks architect/artist Hamad Almuzaini: “Governance and the streamlining of lived experience – an impossible task – or something more open\, broken\, and constantly reinvented?” The exhibition looks at placemaking within the context of Kuwait City\, considering everyday details\, overlooked objects\, and urban infrastructures that shape places to trace the subtle relationships between people\, objects\, systems\, and the built environment.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Golden Harvest\, Lasting Bloom
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition dedicated to the natural maturity\, abundance\, and fullness of autumn\, including works by Rimma Gagloeva\, Javlon Umarbekov\, Timur Akhmedov\, and Vera Nechaeva. Because each artist approaches the theme of autumn in their own way\, discovering a personal language through colour\, light\, form\, and painterly expression\, the exhibition is not simply a literal depiction of autumn – more an exploration of how the same natural motif can acquire entirely different artistic meanings.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Private World
DESCRIPTION:A group show for Lulua Alyahya\, Rami Farook\, Sohrab Hura\, and Khaled Jarada that promises to take the viewer into “intimate\, elusive worlds … Modest in scale\, [the works] invite a form of looking that is closer and more inward\, creating encounters that feel private rather than public”. The gallery goes on: “Many of the works evoke states of solitude\, seclusion and inward attention. They seem to exist apart from the demands of the outside world\, creating spaces for reflection\, imagination and feeling. Across the exhibition\, intimacy takes different forms: through personal observation\, fragments and fleeting moments\, relationships and lived experience\, or through atmospheric and psychologically charged spaces …”

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Sharif’s first solo exhibition in the UAE presents an autobiographical and very personal series of works about the struggles of private and artist life in a closed society – “a vulnerable\, nuanced presentation of life”. The Bahraini artist uses colour to convey privacy and intimacy\, “expressive hues that meld harsh truths with illusions of what could be … Sharif’s approach ensures that his depiction of these taboos is conveyed through humble depictions that preserve a certain Oriental sensibility\, avoiding the shock value or censorship they might otherwise provoke. The scenes are all about ambiance\, a haze of what was\, what is\, and what could be”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Amna AlMemari\, Lubnah Ansari\, MG\, Andrew Riad: Infrared
DESCRIPTION:This group show is the culmination of the second edition of NIKA Project Space’s Open Studio programme: four artists based in the UAE were invited to develop new bodies of work in dialogue with the space\, one another\, and the public. Curated by Rahel Aima\,  the exhibition brings together projects developed during the residency themed around the observer effect – “in which a wave becomes a particle and the body becomes a tongue through ritual\, accumulation\, and the heat of the eye … Rather than producing works in response to a prescribed theme\, the participating artists continued investigations proposed during the Open Studio application process. Over the course of the residency\, these projects evolved through experimentation\, research\, conversation\, and material exploration\, offering a glimpse into artistic practice as an unfolding process”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Stephan Kaluza: From Dust to Bloom
DESCRIPTION:Stephan Kaluza’s practice is fundamentally concerned with depictions of nature\, either as hyper-realistic oils or near-abstract renderings. These two modes of painting should be seen as different stages of the same subject in a process of transformation: disruptions creep in\, and appearances prove deceptive. Says the gallery: “At first glance\, the paintings appear to be precise\, almost preservative images of an intact world – until a second layer emerges\, sharply challenging what is being seen”.
