SUMMARY:Rana Begum: Taking Form
DESCRIPTION:Rana Begum brings her textile works to The Third Line for the first time. Her fifth solo exhibition at the gallery features a new body of large-scale wool tapestries presented alongside works on linen\, paper and MDF\, all reflecting the artist’s longstanding engagement with abstraction and minimalism and continuing her exploration of light through new materials and forms. Her characteristic engagement with geometry runs throughout\, with forms suggesting patterns that extend beyond their physical boundaries. \nSuspended from the ceiling in Gallery 1\, Begum’s nearly 5m-tall tapestries should transform the space into a vast\, immersive field of cascading colour. The tapestries are feature coloured triangles\, woven together using the ridging technique that results in a dual pattern revealed only as the viewer moves around them. \nGallery 2 will have a series of large-scale linen paintings. The natural\, unprocessed tone and texture of the linen influence the colour as it is absorbed into the weave\, creating a sense of rawness and an organic quality across the surface. SUMMARY:Maggie Otieno: Sojourner – The Difference Is the Same
DESCRIPTION:New works by the Kenyan artist Maggie Otieno\, her first solo show here since the gallery began representing her in 2024 . Otieno’s practice centres on the transformation of reclaimed and distressed materials.; working across wood\, metal\, and mixed media\, her semi -abstract forms explore layered narratives of history\, memory\, human interaction\, and environmental survival. Her works function as vessels of remembrance and renewal\, grounding social and historical reflection in physical form. \nFeatured in the exhibition are new works based around railway sleepers\, symbols of East Africa’s colonial past. More than 150 years old\, these timbers travelled from India to Kenya for railway lines\, carrying with them the stories of travellers\, labourers\, and communities. Also included are works created during a residency at El Anatsui Studio in Ghana last summer. Sculptures made from fragments of wooden canoes bear traces of memory and passage; some are hinged to resemble books\, evoking the turning of a page and the opening of a new chapter. \nTo 13 November.

SUMMARY:Nada Elkalaawy: The Butterfly’s Burden
DESCRIPTION:Borrowed from the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish\, the title of this exhibition by by London-based artist Nada Elkalaawy “speaks to the tension between sensitivity\, beauty\, and emotional weight”\, as the gallery has it. “Across a body of paintings developed through layered processes of accumulation and erasure\, Elkalaawy explores memory\, loss\, regeneration\, and the passage of time; ephemeral forms including flowers\, butterflies\, domestic vessels\, family photographs\, and ghostly figures hold traces of shared human experience\, drifting between past and present\, presence and absence.” \nElkalaawy’s practice is based in the relationship between memory\, representation\, and materiality. DESCRIPTION:Aisha Alabbar Gallery’s newly renovated space reopens with a solo exhibition by the UAE-based French artist that features paintings\, screen prints\, drawings and textile works. DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s popular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat.
