SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Afra Al Dhaheri: Restless Circle
DESCRIPTION:A selection of works by Afra Al Dhaheri that explore the structural effects of tension\, repetition and time provides Sharjah Art Foundation’s first show of Autumn. “Working with materials such as cotton rope\, fabric\, cement and hair\, the artist emphasises slow gestures\, intentional movements and the fatigue that can build from ongoing\, repetitive and even invisible labour …” \nThe exhibition’s title comes from a newly commissioned installation with the same name; that draws inspiration from desert plants that create spiral patterns in the sand as they move with the wind. For Afra Al Dhaheri\, this offers a metaphor for mental exhaustion and collective burnout\, the sense of being endlessly pushed to produce or perform: “in other works\, repetition emerges as a condition of making\, a method shaped by the interplay of tension\, weight and the ongoing rhythm of doing and undoing”.

SUMMARY:Sharjah Film Platform 8
DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual celebration of indie/experimental cinema returns for its eighth edition from 14 to 23 November 2025 with an expanded lineup of films\, talks and artist development programmes. Screenings and events will take place at Mirage City Cinema\, SAF’s open-air theatre in Arts Square\, plus VOX Cinemas in City Centre Al Zahia. \nOpening the 10-day festival is Baab (2025)\, a new fantasy film by Nayla Al Khaja that blurs the boundaries between the living and the dead. The programme also includes Carissa (2024 – still above)\, a coming-of-age drama from South Africa; Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk (2025) which documents the exchange between the late citizen journalist Fatema Hassona in Gaza and the filmmaker Sepideh Farsi; and five shorts produced through the SFP Short Film Production Grant – Saint Andrews (2025) by Erin Nene-Lee Ramirez; Yathoom (2025) by Hana Kazim; L’mina (2025) by Randa Maroufi; Goat (2024) by Judy Kibinge; and Morgenkreis [Morning Circle] (2025) by Basma Alsharif. \nAt the heart of SFP is the Competition section\, which features 27 documentary and fiction films nominated by an committee of filmmakers and industry experts and selected from films released in the past two years. All these are being screened in the UAE for the first time; a number of screenings will be followed by Q&A sessions with the directors. \nThe Director in Focus segment honours regional directors for their lifetime achievements in global cinema. This year the accolade goes to Jocelyne Saab (1948–2019)\, whose politically engaged documentaries and experimental features continue to inspire generations of filmmakers. The festival will be showing four of Saab’s films: Dunia\, Kiss Me Not on the Eyes (2005); Once Upon a Time in Beirut (1995); South Lebanon: The Story of a Village under Siege (1976); and Les Femmes palestiniennes (Palestinian Women) (1974). A special discussion panel features filmmaker\, producer and researcher Mohanad Yaqubi with Mathilde Rouxel\, President of the Jocelyne Saab Association. \nNew this year is First Takes\, organised by Sharjah Art Foundation in collaboration with AUS\, MYUAD\, the University of Sharjah\, and Zayed University. It spotlights short experimental works by UAE-based students and recent graduates. In addition to the film screenings\, there will also be a public roundtable addressing the challenges and opportunities for emerging filmmakers in the UAE. \nThe full programme is here; most feature tickets are a bargain AED 15\, some screenings are free.

SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi Art
DESCRIPTION:The 16th edition of Abu Dhabi Art will take place from 19 to 23 November\, as usual at Manarat al Saadiyat. The fair element has more than 140 galleries from 37 countries\, by far the largest number to date – last year’s edition had 102 galleries. And it also means Abu Dhabi Art has overtaken local rival Art Dubai (the March edition of Art Dubai had around 120\, about the same as in 2024). \nMohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak\, chair of DCT Abu Dhabi\, described the fair as “the region’s most influential platform for art and ideas\, a cultural moment where the UAE’s pioneering spirit engages with the global art community”. He may well be right; and as well as the record number of galleries\, Abu Dhabi Art – which from next year will become Frieze Abu Dhabi as a result of a deal with the Frieze art fairs group – continues to promote what its director Dyala Nusseibeh calls “under-represented art histories … From pioneers of the Peruvian Amazon\, Venezuela and Brazil to modernists from Türkiye\, artists from Nigeria’s Osogbo art movement\, Khaleeji trailblazers\, modern artists from North Africa and leading artists from China\, this year’s fair resonates with the globally impactful\, museum-led vision shaping Saadiyat Island’s cultural identity”. \nThe fair itself is organised into five principal sectors: \nModern & Contemporary: for established galleries (who have been operating for at least seven years) with curatorial framework for booth presentations. This is the main section\, with 55 galleries showing. \nSpecial Projects: up to three artist presentations by individual galleries who have been in business for at least three years – more than 50 of these. \nEmerge: for artworks priced under $3\,000 – seven participants this year. \nBidaya: for emerging galleries (operating for less than three years) who are first-time participants. There are three exhibitors. \nFocus: galleries invited to participate with specific artists chosen by a guest curator. This where you will find the Collectors Salon for collectable non-art works; a section for Modern Türkiye\, with three galleries showcasing rarely seen works by modern masters; a Nigeria Spotlight featuring seven galleries from the country; and the Gulf Region focus\, with a good selection of local galleries \nBut as well as the conventional art fair\, Abu Dhabi Art places a lot of emphasis on its public engagement programme – installations\, commissions\, exhibitions\, talks and events throughout the year. Worth catching: \n Beyond Emerging Artists This programme commissions new work from three emerging artists in the UAE. The 2025 edition is curated by Issam Kourbaj\, who has been mentoring Alla Abdunabi\, Salmah Almansoori and Maktoum Marwan Al Maktoum as the three participants this year. \nCommunity Partners Exhibition Since 2018\, Abu Dhabi Art has invited community partners to participate in the fair through thematic exhibitions that foster cultural dialogue and social impact. For 2025 ADMAF is collaborating with Studio Salasil\, a future-focused curatorial studio\, to transform the Community Partners exhibition into a vibrant platform for artistic and cultural dialogue. \nArt + Tech Launched back in 2017\, the Art + Tech programme at Abu Dhabi Art connects students from universities across the UAE with artists working at the intersection of creative expression and emerging technologies. This year’s programme is led by Ahmed Al Attar\, an Emirati robotics engineer and founder of art and technology studio REALIITY. Drawing inspiration from traditional Sadu patterns\, the project will be reimagining heritage through a kinetic projection installation that explores pseudo-randomness\, cultural symbolism\, and technological transformation. \nAnd this year for the first time Abu Dhabi Art will officially feature digital art via its Digital Art Partner\, reimagined – “a new initiative based in the UAE focused on driving adoption of technology and blockchain in the arts”. Its curated selection showcases seven artists with works built on technical and conceptual innovation\, engaging critically with digital formats and pushing creative boundaries; alongside the exhibition\, reimagined is hosting a program of talks and panels discussions with artists\, curators\, and art professionals. \nAbu Dhabi Art is open daily from 2am to 9pm. DESCRIPTION:This is St Petersburg Opera’s signature production of one of opera’s greatest works\, reimagined with striking originality by the celebrated Russian director Yuri Alexandrov. Rigoletto remains one of Verdi’s most enduring masterpieces: a story of love\, betrayal\, and revenge told through some of the most celebrated music in the operatic repertoire; Alexandrov’s version transforms the jester from the familiar hunchback into a sharp\, cunning figure whose torment lies hidden behind his courtly disguise – a haunting portrayal of cruelty\, corruption\, and vulnerability. \nThis lavish\, costumed spectacle otherwise treats the classic with due reverence. There’s a second performance tomorrow (20 November). \nAs with most shows at this venue\, there’s a 20% discount on food and drinks at the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray.
