DESCRIPTION:A selection of works by Afra Al Dhaheri that explore the structural effects of tension\, repetition and time provides Sharjah Art Foundation’s first show of Autumn. “Working with materials such as cotton rope\, fabric\, cement and hair\, the artist emphasises slow gestures\, intentional movements and the fatigue that can build from ongoing\, repetitive and even invisible labour …” \nThe exhibition’s title comes from a newly commissioned installation with the same name; that draws inspiration from desert plants that create spiral patterns in the sand as they move with the wind. For Afra Al Dhaheri\, this offers a metaphor for mental exhaustion and collective burnout\, the sense of being endlessly pushed to produce or perform: “in other works\, repetition emerges as a condition of making\, a method shaped by the interplay of tension\, weight and the ongoing rhythm of doing and undoing”.

DESCRIPTION:Under the theme ‘Between You and a Book’ the 44th Edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair offers 12 days of panel discussions\, talks\, and interactive workshops with a lineup of authors\, creators\, and publishers. There’s also a full cultural programme of artistic\, theatrical\, and live performances. In total\, SIBF will have 1\,200 events and books from 2\,350 publishers and exhibitors from 118 countries \nThe Republic of Greece\, previously announced as this year’s official Guest of Honour\, will deliver a programme centred around “edutainment\,” including book signings\, interactive workshops\, and performances. \nSaid Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi\, chair of the organising Sharjah Book Authority: “We take pride in the fair’s role as a global platform that places Arab culture at the centre of the human knowledge landscape. This year’s theme\, ‘Between You and a Book’\, underscores that the relationship between people and books is a continuous and reciprocal journey\, where readers not only discover new knowledge but also uncover something new about themselves. They also come to understand that books serve as a bridge that fosters communication between cultures and empowers individuals and societies to shape a more enlightened future.” \nHighlights: \nCultural programme Over 300 events\, including panel discussions\, workshops\, and readings that highlight a wide range of creative. DESCRIPTION:A seven-day live art “experience” (7-13 November\, 5-9pm) lets visitors watch and take part in the creative process as a different artist each day runs a live demonstration and participative workshop. \nThe artists: \n7 Nov Azza Al Qubaisi Express Yourself on the Palm The Emirati artist leads a workshop inspired by the symbolic Palm Eye\, a reflection of unity\, and creativity. Participants will express themselves using natural materials such as sand\, leaves\, rope and thread\, adding their personal touch to individual palm pieces \n9 Nov Marta Lamovsek Daughter of the Dunes Photographer Marta Lamovsek leads a portrait workshop exploring identity\, empowerment and self-expression. Drawing inspiration from Emirati heritage and craftsmanship\, participants will engage in a transformative creative process guided by storytelling\, styling and intuitive direction. The session will culminate in a live projection of the completed portraits \n9 Nov Nathaniel Alapide Sands of Time Sand artist Nathaniel Alapide will invite participants to help bring to life a sweeping composition that features camels\, dunes and Dubai’s skyline\, Participants will be contributing to a collective work that celebrates craftsmanship and community. \n10 Nov Rany Melad The Silent Grace Mosaic designer and visual artist Rany Melad will lead a collaborative workshop with pre-cut tiles assembled into a laser engraved panel. The result will be a large\, handcrafted mural symbolising patience\, collaboration and unity in design. \n11 Nov Aga Korycka Falcon – Born of Sea and Sand Polish resin artist Aga Korycka will guide participants through a sculptural workshop inspired by the UAE’s natural landscapes\, using driftwood\, palm fibres\, shells\, stones and resin falcons. \n12 Nov Moosa Al Halyan Neigh Emirati painter Moosa Al Halyan will lead a collaborative art experience focused on movement and expression. Using his signature fluid line-drawing technique\, he will create a dynamic horse composition while inviting participants to experiment with colour\, form\, and emotion. \n13 Nov Ghaleb Hawila The Dirham Lebanese calligrapher Ghaleb Hawila will close the week with a participatory artwork inspired by the Emirati coin. \nThe completed artworks will remain on display until Union Day on 3 December.

SUMMARY:Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art
DESCRIPTION:The theme for VCUarts Qtara’s 11th biennial Symposium on Islamic Art\, Islam and Visual Culture in Contemporary Asia\, aims for a fresh look at how Muslim communities across South\, Southeast\, and East Asia are engaging with Islamic art. The co-chairs\, Hala Auji and Radha Dalal\, have spent a good deal of time on the ground in cities like Hong Kong\, Singapore and Seoul\, meeting with curators\, artists\, and scholars to better understand how Islamic art is being produced\, displayed\, and lived in contemporary Asian contexts; this research has informed a Symposium that is both rigorous and responsive (says the promotional material). It brings together academic insight\, creative practice\, and lived experience to ask how Islamic art continues to evolve across geographies; from photomedia and textiles to architecture and community-based installations\, the programme reflects a spectrum of artistic expression.
