Ultimately\, we’re asking: how can design bring people together across disciplines\, geographies and generations?” That sets the bar quite high … \nThe highlights: \nDowntown Design 5-9 November The region’s leading fair for high-quality and contemporary design\, returns to the d3 Waterfront Terrace. This is the B2B part of Design Week\, showing collections\, innovative products and design solutions for the interiors busness; the show\, which includes this year’s cohort of the Athath Fellowship by MAKE in Abu Dhabi and the annual Tanween programme by Tashkeel\, is complemented by a programme of “pop-up concepts”\, regional spotlights\, talks and panel discussions. Its website is here; admission is AED 80 (one day pass; a four-day pass is AED 150) which gives access to both Editions and Downtown Design. \nEditions 5-9 November\, 12pm – 8pm The second outing for the limited-edition art and design show features prints\, photography\, works on paper\, ceramics\, contemporary design\, and artist multiples. This year’s winning proposal\, When Does a Threshold Become a Courtyard?\, is by UAE-based design and research studio Some Kind of Practice\, founded by Omar Darwish and Abdulla Abbas. \nAbwab The annual commission for designers from across Asia and Africa has showcased the work of more than 180 applicants since its inception in 2015\, Abwab. DESCRIPTION:A selection of works by Afra Al Dhaheri that explore the structural effects of tension\, repetition and time provides Sharjah Art Foundation’s first show of Autumn. “Working with materials such as cotton rope\, fabric\, cement and hair\, the artist emphasises slow gestures\, intentional movements and the fatigue that can build from ongoing\, repetitive and even invisible labour …” \nThe exhibition’s title comes from a newly commissioned installation with the same name; that draws inspiration from desert plants that create spiral patterns in the sand as they move with the wind. For Afra Al Dhaheri\, this offers a metaphor for mental exhaustion and collective burnout\, the sense of being endlessly pushed to produce or perform: “in other works\, repetition emerges as a condition of making\, a method shaped by the interplay of tension\, weight and the ongoing rhythm of doing and undoing”.

The session will culminate in a live projection of the completed portraits \n9 Nov Nathaniel Alapide Sands of Time Sand artist Nathaniel Alapide will invite participants to help bring to life a sweeping composition that features camels\, dunes and Dubai’s skyline\, Participants will be contributing to a collective work that celebrates craftsmanship and community. \n10 Nov Rany Melad The Silent Grace Mosaic designer and visual artist Rany Melad will lead a collaborative workshop with pre-cut tiles assembled into a laser engraved panel. The result will be a large\, handcrafted mural symbolising patience\, collaboration and unity in design. \n11 Nov Aga Korycka Falcon – Born of Sea and Sand Polish resin artist Aga Korycka will guide participants through a sculptural workshop inspired by the UAE’s natural landscapes\, using driftwood\, palm fibres\, shells\, stones and resin falcons. \n12 Nov Moosa Al Halyan Neigh Emirati painter Moosa Al Halyan will lead a collaborative art experience focused on movement and expression. Using his signature fluid line-drawing technique\, he will create a dynamic horse composition while inviting participants to experiment with colour\, form\, and emotion. \n13 Nov Ghaleb Hawila The Dirham Lebanese calligrapher Ghaleb Hawila will close the week with a participatory artwork inspired by the Emirati coin. \nThe completed artworks will remain on display until Union Day on 3 December.

DESCRIPTION:The theme for VCUarts Qtara’s 11th biennial Symposium on Islamic Art\, Islam and Visual Culture in Contemporary Asia\, aims for a fresh look at how Muslim communities across South\, Southeast\, and East Asia are engaging with Islamic art. The co-chairs\, Hala Auji and Radha Dalal\, have spent a good deal of time on the ground in cities like Hong Kong\, Singapore and Seoul\, meeting with curators\, artists\, and scholars to better understand how Islamic art is being produced\, displayed\, and lived in contemporary Asian contexts; this research has informed a Symposium that is both rigorous and responsive (says the promotional material). It brings together academic insight\, creative practice\, and lived experience to ask how Islamic art continues to evolve across geographies; from photomedia and textiles to architecture and community-based installations\, the programme reflects a spectrum of artistic expression.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Ruba Salameh: Refined Compositions
DESCRIPTION:In the face of genocide\, Palestinian artist Ruba Salameh finds her way forward through abstract painting – weaving her own narrative while connecting across generations to the work of art historian and artist Kamal Boullata. \nThis exhibition reflects primarily on the persistence of certain symbols\, such as the Palestinian flag\, in the work of Palestinian artists. Reducing the colour palette as a gesture encouraged Salameh to revisit an act similar to that of other Palestinian artists before her\, as an act of reclamation. It revealed how\, even with the passing of time\, these visual elements have remained charged with urgency and continue to inhabit the thoughts and practices of Palestinian artists.
