Ultimately\, we’re asking: how can design bring people together across disciplines\, geographies and generations?” That sets the bar quite high … \nThe highlights: \nDowntown Design 5-9 November The region’s leading fair for high-quality and contemporary design\, returns to the d3 Waterfront Terrace. This is the B2B part of Design Week\, showing collections\, innovative products and design solutions for the interiors busness; the show\, which includes this year’s cohort of the Athath Fellowship by MAKE in Abu Dhabi and the annual Tanween programme by Tashkeel\, is complemented by a programme of “pop-up concepts”\, regional spotlights\, talks and panel discussions. This year’s winning proposal\, When Does a Threshold Become a Courtyard?\, is by UAE-based design and research studio Some Kind of Practice\, founded by Omar Darwish and Abdulla Abbas. \nAbwab The annual commission for designers from across Asia and Africa has showcased the work of more than 180 applicants since its inception in 2015\, Abwab. DESCRIPTION:A selection of works by Afra Al Dhaheri that explore the structural effects of tension\, repetition and time provides Sharjah Art Foundation’s first show of Autumn. “Working with materials such as cotton rope\, fabric\, cement and hair\, the artist emphasises slow gestures\, intentional movements and the fatigue that can build from ongoing\, repetitive and even invisible labour …” \nThe exhibition’s title comes from a newly commissioned installation with the same name; that draws inspiration from desert plants that create spiral patterns in the sand as they move with the wind. For Afra Al Dhaheri\, this offers a metaphor for mental exhaustion and collective burnout\, the sense of being endlessly pushed to produce or perform: “in other works\, repetition emerges as a condition of making\, a method shaped by the interplay of tension\, weight and the ongoing rhythm of doing and undoing”.

The result will be a large\, handcrafted mural symbolising patience\, collaboration and unity in design. \n11 Nov Aga Korycka Falcon – Born of Sea and Sand Polish resin artist Aga Korycka will guide participants through a sculptural workshop inspired by the UAE’s natural landscapes\, using driftwood\, palm fibres\, shells\, stones and resin falcons. \n12 Nov Moosa Al Halyan Neigh Emirati painter Moosa Al Halyan will lead a collaborative art experience focused on movement and expression. Using his signature fluid line-drawing technique\, he will create a dynamic horse composition while inviting participants to experiment with colour\, form\, and emotion. \n13 Nov Ghaleb Hawila The Dirham Lebanese calligrapher Ghaleb Hawila will close the week with a participatory artwork inspired by the Emirati coin. \nThe completed artworks will remain on display until Union Day on 3 December.

DESCRIPTION:The theme for VCUarts Qtara’s 11th biennial Symposium on Islamic Art\, Islam and Visual Culture in Contemporary Asia\, aims for a fresh look at how Muslim communities across South\, Southeast\, and East Asia are engaging with Islamic art. The co-chairs\, Hala Auji and Radha Dalal\, have spent a good deal of time on the ground in cities like Hong Kong\, Singapore and Seoul\, meeting with curators\, artists\, and scholars to better understand how Islamic art is being produced\, displayed\, and lived in contemporary Asian contexts; this research has informed a Symposium that is both rigorous and responsive (says the promotional material). It brings together academic insight\, creative practice\, and lived experience to ask how Islamic art continues to evolve across geographies; from photomedia and textiles to architecture and community-based installations\, the programme reflects a spectrum of artistic expression.

DESCRIPTION:In his new production the Greek choreographer Christos Papadopoulos embarks on his inaugural collaboration with the dancers of the Dance On Ensemble\, a group that features performers aged more than 40. Incorporating their knowledge and experience into the creation\, together they explore moments of perception and intensities of the moment that create a lively restlessness\, a permanent vibration in which the spectator is inevitably involved … \nChristos Papadopoulos’ works are fed by an intensely observant approach to movement and often unfold with a lively and meditative power. His attention is focused on the minimal shifts of perception\, the perpetual\, often unnoticed and yet powerful movements that are ever-present in nature\, in everyday life\, within physical phenomena and political contexts. The result promises a memorable and perhaps profound experience. \nIn the theatre foyer at 7.30pm there’s a 20-minute Moving Introduction to the piece. This interactive session invites the audience to explore two to three movement approaches from the choreography – no dance experience is needed\, “just a bit of curiosity”. \nMellowing is presented in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region. Use the code MELLOWING20 for a discount on the ticket price. \nAnd if you want more\, there’s a two-hour Choreographic Laboratory 40+ in the afternoon led by Laura Böttinger\, a senior dancer with the Dance On Ensemble.
