SUMMARY:Al Quoz Creative Entrepreneurship Forum: day one
DESCRIPTION:Dubai Culture’s two-day information and edutainment event for the cultural and creative sector\, showcasing the investment and development prospects offered in particular by Al Quoz Creative Zones and aimed as always at “entrepreneurs\, startups\, investors\, and professionals interested in the cultural and creative industries” – networking and filling your contacts book has proved to be an important feature of the Forum. \nThe programme hasn’t been published; but we do know it includes keynote speeches (which are commendably short)\, panel discussions (usually interesting)\, practical workshops (especially good for nuts-and-bolts stuff like sources of finance and getting business licences)\, and the Al Quoz Creative Entrepreneurship Competition – seven finalists from 120+ submissions pitch their ideas in public for a chance to win AED 160\,000 (in prizes\, not in cash) \nIt’s free\, but you need to pre-register. \n

SUMMARY:La Plus Précieuse des Marchandises | The Most Precious of Cargoes: dir Michel Hazanavicius (2024)
DESCRIPTION:This moving animated feature was deservedly selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. The story centres on a woodcutter and his family; they find a small girl in the forest who has been thrown from a moving train. The train is heading to Auschwitz\, and she was thrown to some kind of safety by her father … The film is adapted from a 2019 novel by French author and playwright Jean-Claude Grumberg\, about which one reviewer said: “It is difficult … to write a work of fiction about the Holocaust that is original; even simply in this sense\, Grumberg’s work succeeds where many have failed”. Much the same applies to the film. Recommended. \nIn French with English subtitles. AF members pay AED 25.

SUMMARY:Stitching Palestine: dir Carol Mansour (2017)
DESCRIPTION:As part of its current SILA: All That Is Left To You exhibition\, Maraya Art Centre is hosting two film screenings that extend the exhibition’s exploration of Palestinian memory\, resistance\, and cultural legacy. Carol Mansour’s documentary features 12 Palestinian women living in Lebanon\, Jordan and Palestine\, who draw upon the ancient and enduring art of Palestinian embroidery to share stories about their identities\, tales of resistance and memories of their homeland. As lawyers\, artists\, housewives\, activists\, architects and politicians\, each recounts a distinctly personal story; through the course of the film a collective embroidery begins to take shape\, linking one woman to another.

SUMMARY:Bedouins of the Wind: dir Danish Farhan (2024)
DESCRIPTION:This 49-minute documentary\, shot on location in Al Dhaid\, provides an intimate portrait of the world of Bedouin culture – camel racing\, falconry\, the unseen life rooted in the desert. The protagonist Abdulaziz Al Tunaiji trains camels for the nation’s most anticipated race\, while two generations ponder whether they will be the last of the Bedouins … \nThis premiere marks the beginning of the film’s regional and international release. \nThe screening will be followed by a conversation with filmmaker Danish Farhan and protagonist Abdelaziz Alteneiji on storytelling as preservation and how unrecorded histories can speak to the present\, with Sara Al Mheiri\, curator and author of Under the Ghaf Tree\, joining as a guest panellist.

SUMMARY:TGIFunny Comedy Night
DESCRIPTION:Dubomedy gigs are usually pretty good\, especially when the price is free (with a minimum spend of AED 25 – let us know if you can find anything to buy here at that price) and a “fantastic” (their judgement) bill of stand-ups – “you never know who will drop by!” It’s at TGI’s in the Rove Downtown.

SUMMARY:Faces and Voices of Malta: A Mediterranean Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:Traditional music from Malta comes to the Cultural Foundation’s outdoor amphitheatre\, presented in partnership with the Embassy of Malta. The evening will showcase the art of għana\, a distinctive style of Maltese folk music that probably has its roots in Arabic influences (certainly the word originates with the Arabic Ghena or Ghina\, meaning richness or lyricism). Two of the country’s top exponents will be accompanied by three guitarists. \n
