SUMMARY:Sharjah International Film Festival for Children & Youth (SIFF)
DESCRIPTION:The 12th Edition of SIFF takes place 6 to 11 October at VOX Cinemas in City Centre Al Zahia with what looks like a strong lineup – 76 films (chosen from 1\,740 submissions!) representing 26 countries. South Korea is participating as a Country of Honor\, giving audiences the opportunity to explore the way Korean cinema’ has become a major contributor to South Korea’s creative economy\, soft power\, and tourism industry. \nThey include three Middle East premieres – animated feature Miss Moxy (dir Wip Vernooij and Vincent Bal\, Netherlands)\, the story of a cat who has to find her way back home with a couple of unlikely friends; Sarah Talab’s Saudi feature Hajeer\, about a young musician whose life is turned upside down after suffering a childhood illness that causes him to lose his hearing; and Seryeong Jeong’s 2:15PM\, a remarkable poignant tale that you should really see if you can. Ten-year-old Hyunsu comes across six-year-old Jo Minha\, who has been isolated from the world by her abusive father; understanding the power of kindness\, Hyunsu sneaks visits to Jo Minha at precisely 2:15pm each day for a fleeting ten minutes together … \nOn the sidelines\, SIFF Pop-Up will be hosted in Sharjah Research Technology & Innovation Park with a series of activations and workshops aiming to encourage the young to get involved with film. \nThe website is less than helpful at the moment: right now you can’t tell exactly what’s showing when\, or how much the tickets might be. Hopefully it will get sorted out …

SUMMARY:Banafsheh Hemmati: Body Geometry
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the UAE for the Tehran-based artist-designer presents a collection of the artist’s jewellery and wearable sculptures. Body Geometry is a research-based project\, where the design process is presented as well as the finished pieces. SUMMARY:And After
DESCRIPTION:A major group exhibition that explores the element of air and its various states through the lens of Arabic terminology\, specifically Sukoon\, Hawaa\, Naseem and Riyah. Sukoon symbolises stillness and the pause between movement; Hawaa refers to the gentle\, everyday state of air. The exhibition examines how these elemental states influence our environments and internal rhythms\, encouraging visitors to contemplate the moments of pause and transformation. \nThe exhibition\, curated by Dirwaza Curatorial Lab\, invites audiences to reconnect with the subtleties of their natural surroundings and the shifts brought by seasonal transitions. \nThe artists: \nYousif Abdulsaid\nAmmar Al Attar\nMoza Al Falasi\nOmar Al Gurg\nMariam Al Khoori\nJawad Al Malhi\nSalmah Al Mansoori\nReem Al Mubarak\nAbdulla Buhijji\nZara Mahmood\nIman Shaggag\nLeila Shirazi\nMohammed Kazem\nAyman Zedani\nRazan Al Sarraf \nTo 22 February.

SUMMARY:Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim: Two Clouds in the Night Sky
DESCRIPTION:A solo show celebrating the work of Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim\, a massively influential figure in the development of contemporary art in the UAE. He was part of the UAE’s first generation of contemporary artists from the late 1980s\, an avant-garde scene that included Hassan Sharif\, Abdullah Al Saadi\, Hussein Sharif\, and Mohammed Kazem. \nThis exhibition should allow for an exploration of Ibrahim’s meditative\, process-driven practice. Ibrahim’s work has been inspired by a lifelong relationship with the environment of Khorfakkan\, his place of birth. This deep connection to his local environment repeats itself throughout his studio practice\, whether through his installations\, drawings or objects\, and the materials he has worked with for over three decades. \nTo 22 February.

SUMMARY:Masood Boomgaard
DESCRIPTION:The rather good South African / Indian comedian is back for a Dubai Comedy festival gig with his alter ego\, Self-Help Singh\, alternative life coach and de-motivational speaker (who apparently “first appeared to Boomgaard in a vision after he fell and hit his head while rushing to the bathroom in an attempt to outrun the gastric consequences of bad lamb vindaloo”). It’s fast\, funny\, and packed with sharp takes on modern life: recommended.

SUMMARY:Psycho: dir Alfred Hitchcock (1960)
DESCRIPTION:It doesn’t get much better than the original if you want a psychological thriller dripping with suspense. Janet Leigh stars as Phoenix secretary Marion Crane\, absconding with a small fortune of her employer’s money; she takes a wrong turn in a storm and finds herself at the Bates Motel\, where Anthony Perkins is in suitably scary form as proprietor Norman Bates. We all know what happens next\, but as private detective Martin Balsam and Marion’s sister (Vera Miles) search for Marion\, the horror and the suspense mount to a terrifying climax … Hitchcock’s film\, definitely one of his greatest movies\, has become a cultural phenomenon with its mix of suspense\, horror\, mystery\, black comedy; this is the original cut of the movie\, exactly as intended by the director.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare's Othello
DESCRIPTION:A much acclaimed version of Shakespeare’s original\, adapted for Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre Centre by director Lara Foot. Other reworkings of Othello have riffed on the notion of the outsider (and a victim of racism) who will always be looked down on by the likes of Brabantio and the Duke; Lara Foot takes it beyond the individual to speak specifically to the violence of genocidal colonialisation\, setting it in 1880s Namibia (which at the time was German Southwest Africa) and inviting the audiences to see the legacies of the brutal violence of colonisation. \nTo make the point she has staged the play in several languages\, isiXhosa and Afrikaans as well as English; and Shakespeare’s Duke has become Otto von Bismarck\, discussing with his officers how to slice up Africa. \nThis feels like an unmissable insight into contemporary southern Africa\, the colonial experience generally\, and maybe Shakespeare too. It probably wouldn’t work without a strong production team – costumes and the very clever set design by Gerhard Marx\, music by Kyle Shepherd\, lighting by Patrick Curtis\, and a cast led by Atandwa Kani as Othello with Albert Pretorius (Iago) and Carla Smith (Desdemona). \nThe performance on 9 October will be followed by a Q&A with Lara Foot and the creative team\, moderated by Shamoon Zamir\, NYUAD Professor of Literature and Art History. \n
