Apparently it’s “a revolutionary digital art exhibition fully adapted for people with disabilities that celebrates resilience\, creativity\, and the ability to shape the world\, no matter the obstacles”. \nIt runs to 23 December. You book a one-hour slot; first available is 10am (1pm on Saturdays)\, last is 8pm (4pm Monday to Wednesday).

DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Arts Foundation’s annual indie/experimental film festival returns for its seventh edition\, featuring around 30 UAE premieres. \nMost are in the Competition section\, documentary and fiction films that have been nominated by an international committee of filmmakers and industry professionals. Highlights include … \n◊ Kamal Al Jafari’s documentary A Fidai Film (2024) which seeks to reclaim the looted memories of Palestinian history by using archival footage\n◊ Places of the Soul (2023) by Hamida Issa\, which follows an environmental expedition to Antarctica while juxtaposing its icy landscape with the deserts of the filmmaker’s home country\n◊ Pham Ngoc Lan’s fiction feature Cu Li Never Cries (2024)\, a black and white film interweaving personal and political histories in current day Vietnam\n◊ The Great Yawn of History (2024) by Iranian filmmaker Aliyar Rasti\, a story about a middle-aged religious man who goes on a quest for hidden treasure. \nAmong the other films showing are two supported by Sharjah Art Foundation – From Ground Zero (2024)\, an anthology of 22 short films created by filmmakers from Gaza; and Upshot (2024)\, a short directed by Maha Haj\, which tells a story of a solitary couple and the aftermaths of a painful past. \nThe Director in Focus segment honours regional directors for their lifetime achievements in global cinema. Honoured this year is Mohamad Malas\, noted for his moving films chronicling the modern history of Syria and its neighbours. Along with the screening of The Dream (1987)\, The Night (1992) and the global premiere of Oh Father\, I Am Youssef (2024)\, Malas will give a masterclass on the role of storytelling. \nPresented in parallel with the film screenings\, a series of public programmes provides opportunities for learning and gathering. This year’s programme focuses on notions of modernity in new African and Asian film\, cinema as resistance and resilience from Palestine and beyond\, as well as innovations in documentary filmmaking\, among other topics. \nAlso part of this year’s SFP is the Sharjah Film Platform Feature Fund that will award AED 500\,000 to one UAE-based scriptwriter\, director or lead/executive producer for the completion of an English- or Arabic-language narrative feature currently under production. Formerly known as the Pitching Forum\, the strengthened fund should now provide more comprehensive and robust support to filmmakers in the country. \nSFP7 runs 15 to 24 November at the open-air Mirage City Cinema in Sharjah’s historical quarter\, and indoors at VOX Cinemas at City Centre Al Zahia. DESCRIPTION:Alserkal Art Week returns 17-25 November. As usual many of the galleries will be opening new shows during the week (we count ten: they’re listed separately in the Agenda)\, but the Alserkal Avenue people have been developing a programme themselves to provide lots more reasons to visit the Avenue – screenings\, performances\, open studios\, symposia\, workshops\, and slow art walks. This year there is a theme\, ‘Acts of Presence’\, to emphasise “the importance of togetherness and connection amidst an increasingly divided world”. \nOur pickouts:\nMade Present: Biographies of Artworks Defying the Ongoing Nakba Curated by Faris Shomali and Zaina Zarour\, this ‘research exhibition’ charts the survival of over ten Palestinian artworks\, foregrounding the extensive history of artists who have gone to great lengths to ensure their works remain visible. “While the history of Palestine’s art is often depicted as one of loss\, fragmentation\, colonial plunder\, and destruction\, this exhibition offers an alternative historiography – one in which these artworks defy attempts at erasure.” Warehouse 50\, details here. \nWalk With Me: Public Art Commissions Now in its second iteration\, this series of site-specific public art commissions (curated by Zoé Whitley and presented by Alserkal Arts Foundation) sited around the Avenue are intended to reflect on fragility\, resilience\, and public memory. There are four artists with work on show: Dima Srouji\, Asma Belhamar\, Abbas Akhavan and Vikram Divecha. Information here\, and there’s a tour of the works at 4pm on 17 November led by Whitley\, Divecha and Belhamar; free\, but register for a place here. \nSlow art walks A thoughtful amble through exhibitions\, public art\, and hidden corners of the Avenue. There are two\, both on 23 November; one at 4pm with writer/curator Yalda Bidshahri\, the other at 5pm with Priyanka Mehra of Ishara Art Foundation. We’re not sure where these start – A4 space is usually a good bet – and they don’t seem to need preregistration. \nMajlis Talks This edition of Majlis Talks is entitled ‘Acts of Presence: Stories of Africa’s Creative Leaders’. Curated by Charlotte Ashamu\, it is a series of four discussions and demonstrations with alternative voices from Ghana\, Ethiopia\, South Africa\, and Côte d’Ivoire. 17 November\, 5.30-7pm; free\, but register here. \nDomestic Departures: (Im)mobility\, loss and resilience in an uncertain world Recipients of Alserkal Arts Foundation Research Grants 2022-2024 present multidisciplinary projects that address permanence and belonging via conversations and research displays with six practitioners – Khalda El Jack\, Zainab Gaafar\, Lubnah Ansari\, Natasha Maru\, Rhea Shah\, and Maitha AlSuwaidi – using experimental cartography\, immersive installations\, and independent zines. Warehouse 50. \nOur Future(s) This “immersive experience” presented by the Dubai Future Foundation and Museum of the Future\, invites visitors to contemplate our collective futures via an installation that engages audiences through key statements and delicate sound whispers\, representing the uncertainties that shape our shared future. “Through this reflective space\, the Foundation aims to better understand public sentiment\, helping to shape informed strategies and innovative solutions for a more resilient and sustainable world.” Warehouse A1\, information here. \nDissuader: Art and Design This exhibition of work by the Italian designer and artist Franco Perrotti is another collaboration with partners\, in this case the Gieffe Group and Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi. Central to the exhibition is Dissuader\, a monumental allegorical pigeon sculpted from stainless steel and birchwood\, symbolising the complex dynamics between humans and their environment. DESCRIPTION:The inaugural Tanweer Festival promises “a three-day celebration that transcends language\, culture\, and borders” on 22\, 23 and 24 November in the desert at Mleiha\, itself a treasure of visual and archaeological significance. ‘Tanweer’ means something like ‘enlightenment’\, and the festival’s programme includes live music (headliners include Sami Yusuf and Senny Camara; there’s also gnawa\, oud\, and more); Emirati traditional dance and whirling dervish performances; poetry\, art\, and workshops. So there’s a distinct heritage vibe\, but there will be lots of food stalls too\, plus a marketplace and art installations. On-site experiences also include stargazing\, horseriding\, and “other activities that nurture a holistic sense of well-being”. One day passes are AED 700\, the weekend pass is AED 1\,650\, and camping is available.

A group of friends gathers for a dinner party\, only to find that something is not quite right – the kitchen staff have vanished\, the hostess is missing\, and the host has shot himself in the head (accidentally\, as it turns out). That’s just the start of the evening; as more guests arrive\, each adds their own twist to the unfolding situation … It’s really a very good play\, with clever dialogue and moments of tension amid the comedy. Jihane Tehini directs. \nThere are performances at 2.30pm and 8pm. It’s played in English\, with subtitles in French too.

DESCRIPTION:Augustine Paredes’ artist’s room brings together his own personal histories and stories that explore his relationship to identity and family via his personal journey as a migrant\, navigating constantly between time\, places and identities. Gradually moving away from the camera as a main source of image-making\, he has embraced a more process-based approach that focuses on the inherent qualities and agency of materials used within his work. \nThe exhibition’s central work is Mother – a portrait of Marife\, an all-important figure in his life and one that embodies his connection to home and sense of belonging. Other works present traces of burns\, verses of poems\, paintings\, ink stains\, fibres\, pearls and wool threads. Together\, these works explore the artist’s reflections on guilt\, desire and devotion.

DESCRIPTION:The final day of the 16th edition of Abu Dhabi Art. It has five principal sectors: \nModern & Contemporary: for established galleries (who have been operating for at least seven years) with curatorial framework for booth presentations. This is the main section\, with more than 30 galleries showing \nSpecial Projects: solo or dual artist presentations by individual galleries – we count 28 of these \nEmerge: for artworks priced under $3\,000 – nine participants this year \nBidaya: for emerging galleries (operating for less than three years) who are first-time participants. There are two exhibitors \nFocus: galleries invited to participate with specific artists chosen by a guest curator. There are Focus sectors for Hong Kong\, Latin America\, Women Artists and Sustainability (some very interesting selections here\, curated by Riccarda Mandrini) \nThis year there’s also a new regional section called Something Bold\, Something New; eight participating galleries – most of them regular participants in Abu Dhabi Art – will present works by modernist artists “whose practices and legacies are long overdue recognition and appreciation”. \nSilk Road; Drifting Identities is another new section\, this one for artists and galleries from Central Asia and the Caucasus. “These seem important debuts\, because they open long-forgotten discussions around the Silk Road\, which has come to represent a journey of self-discovery for travellers\, a search for identity\, and a time of metamorphosis”. \nThe Collectors Salon is perhaps the most interesting innovation. It’s described as a response to the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s lead in exploring connections between civilisations and cultures across time; so eight exhibitors will present manuscripts\, astrolabes\, historical objects\, rare books and 19th century Orientalist paintings.

DESCRIPTION:Rimini Protokoll pushes the boundaries of conventional theatre. During this performance walk within the collective’s ‘Remote X’ series (2013–ongoing)\, you are invited to explore the growing presence of artificial intelligence in future cities; for this tour\, designed specifically for Abu Dhabi\, you wear headphones (provided) and are guided by a computer-generated voice (in Arabic or English) into familiar and unfamiliar sites “that emerge as if from an imagined film”. \nThe starting point is the Landmark Tower on the Abu Dhabi Corniche Family Park.
