DESCRIPTION:An exhibition created by the Bulgarian immersive-experience specialists Poliforma\, using surround-sound and surround-visuals to celebrate “stories of people who have overcome\, adapted\, or ignored their limitations” through “captivating video inserts\, stunning 3D projections\, and four interactive installations”. Apparently it’s “a revolutionary digital art exhibition fully adapted for people with disabilities that celebrates resilience\, creativity\, and the ability to shape the world\, no matter the obstacles”. \nIt runs to 23 December. You book a one-hour slot; first available is 10am (1pm on Saturdays)\, last is 8pm (4pm Monday to Wednesday).

SUMMARY:Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF)
DESCRIPTION:The 43nd edition of SIBF promises to be the fair’s biggest edition ever\, claiming to show more than 1.5 million titles by 2\,500 publishing houses from 112 different countries. There will also be a packed 12-day agenda of more than 1\,350 activities – among them 47 live cookery demonstrations and no fewer than 600 workshops in creative writing for all age groups conducted in Arabic and English. \nAnd there’s the return of the third edition of the Thriller Festival show-within-the-show (7-10 November) organised in partnership with Thriller Festival NY and featuring authors such as Ahmed Mourad\, Amir Atef\, Yehia Safwat\, Saad Abed Al Badr\, Mohammed Al Nasser\, John J Nance\, Isabella Maldonado\, KJ Howe and Tess Gerritsen. There will be panel sessions\, workshops (including a three-dayer led by Ahmed Mourad on writing thrillers) and of course book signings. DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Arts Foundation’s annual indie/experimental film festival returns for its seventh edition\, featuring around 30 UAE premieres. \nMost are in the Competition section\, documentary and fiction films that have been nominated by an international committee of filmmakers and industry professionals. Highlights include … \n◊ Kamal Al Jafari’s documentary A Fidai Film (2024) which seeks to reclaim the looted memories of Palestinian history by using archival footage\n◊ Places of the Soul (2023) by Hamida Issa\, which follows an environmental expedition to Antarctica while juxtaposing its icy landscape with the deserts of the filmmaker’s home country\n◊ Pham Ngoc Lan’s fiction feature Cu Li Never Cries (2024)\, a black and white film interweaving personal and political histories in current day Vietnam\n◊ The Great Yawn of History (2024) by Iranian filmmaker Aliyar Rasti\, a story about a middle-aged religious man who goes on a quest for hidden treasure. \nAmong the other films showing are two supported by Sharjah Art Foundation – From Ground Zero (2024)\, an anthology of 22 short films created by filmmakers from Gaza; and Upshot (2024)\, a short directed by Maha Haj\, which tells a story of a solitary couple and the aftermaths of a painful past. \nThe Director in Focus segment honours regional directors for their lifetime achievements in global cinema. Honoured this year is Mohamad Malas\, noted for his moving films chronicling the modern history of Syria and its neighbours. Along with the screening of The Dream (1987)\, The Night (1992) and the global premiere of Oh Father\, I Am Youssef (2024)\, Malas will give a masterclass on the role of storytelling. \nPresented in parallel with the film screenings\, a series of public programmes provides opportunities for learning and gathering. This year’s programme focuses on notions of modernity in new African and Asian film\, cinema as resistance and resilience from Palestine and beyond\, as well as innovations in documentary filmmaking\, among other topics. \nAlso part of this year’s SFP is the Sharjah Film Platform Feature Fund that will award AED 500\,000 to one UAE-based scriptwriter\, director or lead/executive producer for the completion of an English- or Arabic-language narrative feature currently under production. Formerly known as the Pitching Forum\, the strengthened fund should now provide more comprehensive and robust support to filmmakers in the country. \nSFP7 runs 15 to 24 November at the open-air Mirage City Cinema in Sharjah’s historical quarter\, and indoors at VOX Cinemas at City Centre Al Zahia. SUMMARY:The Ice Hole – A Cardboard Comedy
DESCRIPTION:This production debuted for four performances in May and two in July; all sold out (deservedly). It’s now back for a run at Theatre by QE2 and these are its last two shows (at 3pm and 8pm). \nIt’s an English version of an award-winning French comedy from 2021\, Les Gros Patinent Bien\, by Pierre Guillois and Olivier Martin-Salvan. They reworked the original for an Anglophone audience at the Edinburgh Festival as The Ice Hole\, and there were rave reviews for a show that has an imposing Shakespearian actor telling incredible stories of a man journeying through Europe under the curse of a mermaid he’d absent-mindedly caught in a fjord. The actor is accompanied by a put-upon flunky (maybe a stage manager?) who strives with the help of hastily-scribbled cardboard signs and boxes to help us understand the meaning of this journey … \nIt’s fun\, mad as trumpets\, with echoes of Monty Python\, Laurel and Hardy\, and the Mighty Boosh. Matthew T Corbett directs Sadiq Saboowala and Patrick Albrecht\, two-time winners of the local Short+Sweet Dubai Theatre Festival\, for Complices Théâtre. \n

SUMMARY:Alserkal Art Week
DESCRIPTION:Alserkal Art Week returns 17-25 November. As usual many of the galleries will be opening new shows during the week (we count ten: they’re listed separately in the Agenda)\, but the Alserkal Avenue people have been developing a programme themselves to provide lots more reasons to visit the Avenue – screenings\, performances\, open studios\, symposia\, workshops\, and slow art walks. This year there is a theme\, ‘Acts of Presence’\, to emphasise “the importance of togetherness and connection amidst an increasingly divided world”. \nOur pickouts:\nMade Present: Biographies of Artworks Defying the Ongoing Nakba Curated by Faris Shomali and Zaina Zarour\, this ‘research exhibition’ charts the survival of over ten Palestinian artworks\, foregrounding the extensive history of artists who have gone to great lengths to ensure their works remain visible. “While the history of Palestine’s art is often depicted as one of loss\, fragmentation\, colonial plunder\, and destruction\, this exhibition offers an alternative historiography – one in which these artworks defy attempts at erasure.” Warehouse 50\, details here. \nWalk With Me: Public Art Commissions Now in its second iteration\, this series of site-specific public art commissions (curated by Zoé Whitley and presented by Alserkal Arts Foundation) sited around the Avenue are intended to reflect on fragility\, resilience\, and public memory. There are four artists with work on show: Dima Srouji\, Asma Belhamar\, Abbas Akhavan and Vikram Divecha. Information here\, and there’s a tour of the works at 4pm on 17 November led by Whitley\, Divecha and Belhamar; free\, but register for a place here. \nSlow art walks A thoughtful amble through exhibitions\, public art\, and hidden corners of the Avenue. There are two\, both on 23 November; one at 4pm with writer/curator Yalda Bidshahri\, the other at 5pm with Priyanka Mehra of Ishara Art Foundation. We’re not sure where these start – A4 space is usually a good bet – and they don’t seem to need preregistration. \nMajlis Talks This edition of Majlis Talks is entitled ‘Acts of Presence: Stories of Africa’s Creative Leaders’. Curated by Charlotte Ashamu\, it is a series of four discussions and demonstrations with alternative voices from Ghana\, Ethiopia\, South Africa\, and Côte d’Ivoire. 17 November\, 5.30-7pm; free\, but register here. \nDomestic Departures: (Im)mobility\, loss and resilience in an uncertain world Recipients of Alserkal Arts Foundation Research Grants 2022-2024 present multidisciplinary projects that address permanence and belonging via conversations and research displays with six practitioners – Khalda El Jack\, Zainab Gaafar\, Lubnah Ansari\, Natasha Maru\, Rhea Shah\, and Maitha AlSuwaidi – using experimental cartography\, immersive installations\, and independent zines. On 23 November\, 2-6pm at Jossa by Alserkal; free\, but register here. \nOpen Studios Alserkal Arts Foundation will also be opening the studios of its current residents – sound artist Jad Saliba\, writer and visual artist Sinzo Aanza\, academic researcher and mixed-media artist Thlana Bazik\, and filmmaker Pallavi Paul. Warehouse 50. \nOur Future(s) This “immersive experience” presented by the Dubai Future Foundation and Museum of the Future\, invites visitors to contemplate our collective futures via an installation that engages audiences through key statements and delicate sound whispers\, representing the uncertainties that shape our shared future. “Through this reflective space\, the Foundation aims to better understand public sentiment\, helping to shape informed strategies and innovative solutions for a more resilient and sustainable world.” Warehouse A1\, information here. \nDissuader: Art and Design This exhibition of work by the Italian designer and artist Franco Perrotti is another collaboration with partners\, in this case the Gieffe Group and Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi. Central to the exhibition is Dissuader\, a monumental allegorical pigeon sculpted from stainless steel and birchwood\, symbolising the complex dynamics between humans and their environment. SUMMARY:Al Ain Book Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:AABF has changed its nomenclature from ‘book fair’ to ‘book festival’ for 2024\, but this is till an important date for Arab-language publishers – and the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC)\, which organises it\, has reported a “significant” increase in publisher registration requests for this 15th edition: the 260 registrations represents better than a twothirds increase on 2023. AABF promotes the Arabic language as “a fundamental pillar of cultural identity\, and a repository of the values\, traditions\, and the rules of conduct (Sanaa’)\, upon which the UAE was founded and from which its unique development journey began – a journey that starts and ends with the human being”. Last year’s fair attracted more than 95\,000 visitors. \nThe ‘festival’ element implies that there will be a lot of sideshows and associated events\, but right now the website is still promoting 2023 and we can’t tell you what they might be. No doubt this will be rectified nearer the time … Note that these dates are a change to the original schedule\, which had AABF opening on 18 November.

SUMMARY:Pina: dir Wim Wenders (2011)
DESCRIPTION:A captivating dance documentary that celebrates the life and work of the world-renowned choreographer Pina Bausch. During the preparations for the film in 2009\, Bausch died suddenly; the dancers of Bausch’s company\, Tanztheater Wuppertal\, convinced him to proceed as a way of memorializing Bausch and her choreography. The film has four major stage performances actually rehearsed by Bausch\, interspersed with solo and duet dances from many of Bausch’s other works; many of the dancers relate their stories of working with Pina. As a result\, Pina is a tribute to an extraordinary artist who redefined the boundaries of modern dance. Screens in the MOVE ON FILM season.
