DESCRIPTION:An exhibition created by the Bulgarian immersive-experience specialists Poliforma\, using surround-sound and surround-visuals to celebrate “stories of people who have overcome\, adapted\, or ignored their limitations” through “captivating video inserts\, stunning 3D projections\, and four interactive installations”. Apparently it’s “a revolutionary digital art exhibition fully adapted for people with disabilities that celebrates resilience\, creativity\, and the ability to shape the world\, no matter the obstacles”. \nIt runs to 23 December. You book a one-hour slot; first available is 10am (1pm on Saturdays)\, last is 8pm (4pm Monday to Wednesday).

SUMMARY:Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF)
DESCRIPTION:The 43nd edition of SIBF promises to be the fair’s biggest edition ever\, claiming to show more than 1.5 million titles by 2\,500 publishing houses from 112 different countries. There will also be a packed 12-day agenda of more than 1\,350 activities – among them 47 live cookery demonstrations and no fewer than 600 workshops in creative writing for all age groups conducted in Arabic and English. \nAnd there’s the return of the third edition of the Thriller Festival show-within-the-show (7-10 November) organised in partnership with Thriller Festival NY and featuring authors such as Ahmed Mourad\, Amir Atef\, Yehia Safwat\, Saad Abed Al Badr\, Mohammed Al Nasser\, John J Nance\, Isabella Maldonado\, KJ Howe and Tess Gerritsen. There will be panel sessions\, workshops (including a three-dayer led by Ahmed Mourad on writing thrillers) and of course book signings. This segment is building into a successful event in its own right and surely deserves its own identity away from SIBF … \nSIBF runs 6 to 17 November\, open daily 10am to 10pm (Fridays 4pm to 11pm). \n  \n

SUMMARY:Adel El Siwi: Yellow Tropics
DESCRIPTION:El Siwi’s first solo exhibition in over a decade features both new paintings and pieces from an archive of earlier works: “the paintings shown here collectively present philosophical provocations and musings” says the gallery. The title references Upper Egypt and the origin of man\, but also Egypt’s literal reach towards its African neighbours\, hinting at a desire to reclaim an element of identity as part of the Continent: “it is not simply Egypt’s Islamic and Mediterranean history and culture that inform his country’s identity\, but according to El Siwi\, a longer and earlier one … A conjuring of a shared Continental history of Africa\, and a desired alignment by the artist artistically and emotionally with a greater story of identity and history\, has resulted in an oeuvre unlike many artists of his generation”. \nTo 9 January. \nRight: Adel El Siwi\, Head of The Princess. DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Arts Foundation’s annual indie/experimental film festival returns for its seventh edition\, featuring around 30 UAE premieres. \nMost are in the Competition section\, documentary and fiction films that have been nominated by an international committee of filmmakers and industry professionals. Highlights include … \n◊ Kamal Al Jafari’s documentary A Fidai Film (2024) which seeks to reclaim the looted memories of Palestinian history by using archival footage\n◊ Places of the Soul (2023) by Hamida Issa\, which follows an environmental expedition to Antarctica while juxtaposing its icy landscape with the deserts of the filmmaker’s home country\n◊ Pham Ngoc Lan’s fiction feature Cu Li Never Cries (2024)\, a black and white film interweaving personal and political histories in current day Vietnam\n◊ The Great Yawn of History (2024) by Iranian filmmaker Aliyar Rasti\, a story about a middle-aged religious man who goes on a quest for hidden treasure. \nAmong the other films showing are two supported by Sharjah Art Foundation – From Ground Zero (2024)\, an anthology of 22 short films created by filmmakers from Gaza; and Upshot (2024)\, a short directed by Maha Haj\, which tells a story of a solitary couple and the aftermaths of a painful past. \nThe Director in Focus segment honours regional directors for their lifetime achievements in global cinema. Honoured this year is Mohamad Malas\, noted for his moving films chronicling the modern history of Syria and its neighbours. Along with the screening of The Dream (1987)\, The Night (1992) and the global premiere of Oh Father\, I Am Youssef (2024)\, Malas will give a masterclass on the role of storytelling. \nPresented in parallel with the film screenings\, a series of public programmes provides opportunities for learning and gathering. This year’s programme focuses on notions of modernity in new African and Asian film\, cinema as resistance and resilience from Palestine and beyond\, as well as innovations in documentary filmmaking\, among other topics. \nAlso part of this year’s SFP is the Sharjah Film Platform Feature Fund that will award AED 500\,000 to one UAE-based scriptwriter\, director or lead/executive producer for the completion of an English- or Arabic-language narrative feature currently under production. Formerly known as the Pitching Forum\, the strengthened fund should now provide more comprehensive and robust support to filmmakers in the country. \nSFP7 runs 15 to 24 November at the open-air Mirage City Cinema in Sharjah’s historical quarter\, and indoors at VOX Cinemas at City Centre Al Zahia.
