DESCRIPTION:An exhibition created by the Bulgarian immersive-experience specialists Poliforma\, using surround-sound and surround-visuals to celebrate “stories of people who have overcome\, adapted\, or ignored their limitations” through “captivating video inserts\, stunning 3D projections\, and four interactive installations”. Apparently it’s “a revolutionary digital art exhibition fully adapted for people with disabilities that celebrates resilience\, creativity\, and the ability to shape the world\, no matter the obstacles”. \nIt runs to 23 December. You book a one-hour slot; first available is 10am (1pm on Saturdays)\, last is 8pm (4pm Monday to Wednesday).

SUMMARY:Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF)
DESCRIPTION:The 43nd edition of SIBF promises to be the fair’s biggest edition ever\, claiming to show more than 1.5 million titles by 2\,500 publishing houses from 112 different countries. There will also be a packed 12-day agenda of more than 1\,350 activities – among them 47 live cookery demonstrations and no fewer than 600 workshops in creative writing for all age groups conducted in Arabic and English. \nAnd there’s the return of the third edition of the Thriller Festival show-within-the-show (7-10 November) organised in partnership with Thriller Festival NY and featuring authors such as Ahmed Mourad\, Amir Atef\, Yehia Safwat\, Saad Abed Al Badr\, Mohammed Al Nasser\, John J Nance\, Isabella Maldonado\, KJ Howe and Tess Gerritsen. There will be panel sessions\, workshops (including a three-dayer led by Ahmed Mourad on writing thrillers) and of course book signings. SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Artist’s Rooms: Amba Sayal-Bennett
DESCRIPTION:Works spanning the last eight years of the artist’s practice that critically engage with the socio-political contexts of architectural heritage and modernist ideologies and aesthetics. Drawing is at the centre of Amba Sayal-Bennett’s practice\, expanding across works on paper\, projections and sculptural installations; she is particularly interested in the nature of abstraction\, using technology in the form of language\, tools\, methods and materiality to stage relations and engagement between human and non-human. \nWithin her work\, Sayal-Bennett critiques the tendency of colonial practices to decontextualise and appropriate. She traces the migration of architectural forms across continents\, such as to Chandigarh in Punjab\, the birthplace of her maternal grandparents\, and where Le Corbusier’s purpose-built city examines the failings of modernism in post-colonial contexts. She explores modernism’s rejection of ornamentalism as well as her interest in sci-fi aesthetics\, a genre which has long been criticised for its colonial overtones.

SUMMARY:Edgar Orlaineta: What We See of Things is the Things
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Mexican artist whose practice focuses on hybrid sculptural forms that draw inspiration from modernism\, popular culture\, and specific historic moments. In particular\, Orlaineta explores post-war design and architecture\, generally depicting biomorphic shapes with a strong surrealist influence. \nIn his new body of work\, Orlaineta reflects on the philosophical explorations of perception and essence\, challenging traditional notions of art and the birth point of objects through a profound engagement with materiality and meaning. His exploration of objects as non-functional or decontextualised allows him to strip them down to their purest form: a thing. What is it that differentiates things from objects\, or even from art? How do these things interact with their environment? Is it the environment that gives them meaning\, or vice versa? SUMMARY:Behzad Khosravi Noori: The Life of an Itinerant Through a Pinhole
DESCRIPTION:Behzad Noori\, PhD is a self-described artist\, writer\, educator and necromancer; his research-based practice includes films\, installations\, and archival studies\, investigating histories from the Global South\, labour and the means of production\, and histories of political relationships that have existed as a counter narration to the east-west / north-south dichotomy. \nNoori uses personal experience as a springboard to establish a hypothetical relationship between memories and significant world events; this show analyses photographs made by his grandfather\, Gholamreza Amirbeigi\, between 1956 and 1968 – using images of working-class agency to consider an unconscious colonial memory and its formative influence on modern\, global southern subjectivity. \nTo 31 March.
