DESCRIPTION:An exhibition created by the Bulgarian immersive-experience specialists Poliforma\, using surround-sound and surround-visuals to celebrate “stories of people who have overcome\, adapted\, or ignored their limitations” through “captivating video inserts\, stunning 3D projections\, and four interactive installations”. Apparently it’s “a revolutionary digital art exhibition fully adapted for people with disabilities that celebrates resilience\, creativity\, and the ability to shape the world\, no matter the obstacles”. \nIt runs to 23 December. You book a one-hour slot; first available is 10am (1pm on Saturdays)\, last is 8pm (4pm Monday to Wednesday).

SUMMARY:Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF)
DESCRIPTION:The 43nd edition of SIBF promises to be the fair’s biggest edition ever\, claiming to show more than 1.5 million titles by 2\,500 publishing houses from 112 different countries. There will also be a packed 12-day agenda of more than 1\,350 activities – among them 47 live cookery demonstrations and no fewer than 600 workshops in creative writing for all age groups conducted in Arabic and English. \nAnd there’s the return of the third edition of the Thriller Festival show-within-the-show (7-10 November) organised in partnership with Thriller Festival NY and featuring authors such as Ahmed Mourad\, Amir Atef\, Yehia Safwat\, Saad Abed Al Badr\, Mohammed Al Nasser\, John J Nance\, Isabella Maldonado\, KJ Howe and Tess Gerritsen. There will be panel sessions\, workshops (including a three-dayer led by Ahmed Mourad on writing thrillers) and of course book signings. SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Istoria: A Retrospective Reimagining Middle Eastern Feminism with Leila Nseir
DESCRIPTION:This retrospective for the late Syrian artist honours Leila Nseir’s legacy and celebrates her contributions to art and feminism. \nNseir’s art was rooted in humanist concerns and feminist thought\, addressing themes of conflict\, inequality\, and poverty; her career was impacted by gender persecution and patriarchal attitudes\, both within her close-knit and broader communities. “Nseir’s intentional reinterpretation of historical forms demonstrates a distinctive fusion of intimacy\, complexity\, and human suffering” says the gallery. \nShe started with sculpture but deemed it too masculine a medium. She then embarked on a long journey in painting and drawing\, but developed oil paint poisoning. Transitioning from oils to acrylics\, graphite\, pastels\, and eventually developing a unique monotype woodcut print technique\, she continued to explore and push artistic boundaries. \nNseir’s later pieces delve into the complexities of diaspora\, migration\, and the interplay between tradition and modernity. She depicted females as a mirror\, reflecting Syria and its embodiment of strength\, complexity\, and intricacy.

DESCRIPTION:The first in The Gallery Collective\, a series of sort-of gallery takeovers whereby Sotheby’s Dubai is giving its DIFC exhibition space over to a series of local galleries in a two-year run starting in November. Every six to eight weeks\, a partner gallery will curate a show in the space. First up is Zidoun-Bossuyt Gallery with a two-hander\, showing the works by NYC-based Khalif Tahir Thompson (“emotionally charged pieces\, characterised [by] a vivid colour palette\, explore themes of identity\, cultural heritage\, and personal narrative”) and the American Summer Wheat (“textured\, vibrant paintings [that] focus on femininity\, labour\, and community through bold\, figurative compositions and innovative use of materials”). DESCRIPTION:“If the bee disappears from the surface of the Earth\,” said Albert Einstein\, “man would have no more than four years left to live”. That’s because without the bees’ pollinating work\, agriculture could collapse and with it our ability to feed ourselves. \nWell\, all over the world bees have been dying for the past few years. Although the causes for this are still a mystery\, one thing is already clear: there is more at stake than simply a few dead insects\, and a great deal more than just honey. Imhoof’s documentary takes us on a journey to meet some of the people and places whose existence depends on bees – a Swiss beekeeper in the Alps\, the gigantic almond plantations of California\, a bee brain researcher in Berlin\, a pollen trader in China. His directorial style is laid back; there’s no hectoring here\, we can draw our own conclusions. And along the way there’s much to enjoy in this film\, with the mystery and beauty of bees emerging strongly – including the perennially fascinating question of whether individual bees are effectively buzzing cells in super-organisms: do they know more than us? \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. NAAS is a collaboration between a number of cultural institutions in the UAE: the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France in the United Arab Emirates\, the Embassy of Canada to the United Arab Emirates\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, the Embassy of Switzerland to the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain\, and Alliance Française Dubai. \nNAAS: Green Reel runs from 10 September to 26 November at Alliance Française Dubai. It’s hosted by Funeral Home Comedy; the Jamaican vibe is always great\, irrespective of whether the comedy is any good – and while there’s always going to be a hit or miss element\, experience suggests it’s been good most of the time so far. The admission price includes two free drinks\, and there’s usually a DJ set afterwards too.
