SUMMARY:Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF)
DESCRIPTION:The 43nd edition of SIBF promises to be the fair’s biggest edition ever\, claiming to show more than 1.5 million titles by 2\,500 publishing houses from 112 different countries. There will also be a packed 12-day agenda of more than 1\,350 activities – among them 47 live cookery demonstrations and no fewer than 600 workshops in creative writing for all age groups conducted in Arabic and English. \nAnd there’s the return of the third edition of the Thriller Festival show-within-the-show (7-10 November) organised in partnership with Thriller Festival NY and featuring authors such as Ahmed Mourad\, Amir Atef\, Yehia Safwat\, Saad Abed Al Badr\, Mohammed Al Nasser\, John J Nance\, Isabella Maldonado\, KJ Howe and Tess Gerritsen. There will be panel sessions\, workshops (including a three-dayer led by Ahmed Mourad on writing thrillers) and of course book signings. This segment is building into a successful event in its own right and surely deserves its own identity away from SIBF … \nSIBF runs 6 to 17 November\, open daily 10am to 10pm (Fridays 4pm to 11pm). \n  \n

SUMMARY:Urban Market Festival
DESCRIPTION:Originally launched in Dubai in 2021 to promote sustainable thrift shopping\, this event arrives in Abu Dhabi with a makeover and what looks like a more commercial bent – the 40+ vendors do include thrift and vintage fashion\, but there’s also new streetwear\, accessories\, nail art and hair braiding\, and “homegrown brands” (maybe there isn’t enough upcyclable/recyclable stuff to go round) – and a specific festival vibe. There’s all-day music from top talents like DJ Beth Marie\, Ayesha Reid\, DJ LongLiveAce\, Olwyn Murray\, DJ Crown Prince and more – check the website for the schedule – and a few pop-up food stalls too. Opens 3pm to midnight on 8 and 9 November\, 3-9pm on 10 November.

SUMMARY:Searching for Pierrot
DESCRIPTION:A return for this single-hander\, written by and (we think) performed by Gillian Rhodes\, who is really very good at this storytelling-with-performance sort of thing. This time it’s a coming-of-age tale of a young boy in the late 19th century; a chance encounter with the famous clown Pierrot “sets off a chain of events that leads the boy through the city\, from the freak show to the opera and all the way to the future … He meets a host of colourful and mysterious characters that prompt him to question what it really means to be remarkable\, and what it costs”. Recommended. \nThere’s a performance in French at 2.30pm and in English at 7.30pm.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Areej Rajab: Interwoven
DESCRIPTION:New work by the Bahraini artist\, based on an interplay of colours and emotions where the intricate patterns of human behaviour are delicately overlapped with the rhythms of nature: “she reveals the intricate beauty of natural forms and how they mirror the complexities of human emotions\,” says the gallery. By layering colours\, Areej reflects how human emotions and experiences intertwine\, much like patterns in nature. \n“I find inspiration in nature as it is the purest source of colour\,” says the artist. “My focus is on colour combinations and how they blend and overlap rather than just colour itself\, much like how human behaviour and emotions often intertwine and influence one another. Different cultures can interpret colour in various ways\, which adds another layer of meaning to my work”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Alymamah Rashed: Mirrors from the Sidewalk
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of Alymamah Rashed’s latest work. A new series of large-scale watercolour and acrylic canvases\, it’s shaped by the belief that bodily connection to specific environments and elements can facilitate spiritual awakening. Rashed reflects on the immersion of the body in water\, soil and sky\, embracing floral elements and the everyday objects that she collects from the sidewalks of her hometown Kuwait.

SUMMARY:Pina: dir Wim Wenders (2011)
DESCRIPTION:A captivating dance documentary that celebrates the life and work of the world-renowned choreographer Pina Bausch. During the preparations for the film in 2009\, Bausch died suddenly; the dancers of Bausch’s company\, Tanztheater Wuppertal\, convinced him to proceed as a way of memorializing Bausch and her choreography. The film has four major stage performances actually rehearsed by Bausch\, interspersed with solo and duet dances from many of Bausch’s other works; many of the dancers relate their stories of working with Pina. As a result\, Pina is a tribute to an extraordinary artist who redefined the boundaries of modern dance. Screens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige: The Vertiginous Story of Orthosia
DESCRIPTION:A second performance for Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige’s speculative performance about the lost Roman city of Orthosia. buried beneath the Nahr al Bared refugee camp in north Lebanon. The ruins of the ancient city of Orthosia\, lost since being hit by a tsunami in 551 CE\, are a major find; but a proper archaeological investigation would necessitate yet another displacement for the families living there – a process that would be socially\, politically and humanly untenable. Performed by Ahmed Abu Arada and Miryana Milad Almaalouly as part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Perform Sharjah programme\, The Vertiginous Story of Orthosia is presented in English with Arabic subtitles.
