SUMMARY:Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF)
DESCRIPTION:The 43nd edition of SIBF promises to be the fair’s biggest edition ever\, claiming to show more than 1.5 million titles by 2\,500 publishing houses from 112 different countries. There will also be a packed 12-day agenda of more than 1\,350 activities – among them 47 live cookery demonstrations and no fewer than 600 workshops in creative writing for all age groups conducted in Arabic and English. \nAnd there’s the return of the third edition of the Thriller Festival show-within-the-show (7-10 November) organised in partnership with Thriller Festival NY and featuring authors such as Ahmed Mourad\, Amir Atef\, Yehia Safwat\, Saad Abed Al Badr\, Mohammed Al Nasser\, John J Nance\, Isabella Maldonado\, KJ Howe and Tess Gerritsen. There will be panel sessions\, workshops (including a three-dayer led by Ahmed Mourad on writing thrillers) and of course book signings. This segment is building into a successful event in its own right and surely deserves its own identity away from SIBF … \nSIBF runs 6 to 17 November\, open daily 10am to 10pm (Fridays 4pm to 11pm). \n  \n

SUMMARY:Steven Naifeh: Found in Translation
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in Abu Dhabi in 50 years of works by Steven Naifeh\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author\, businessman and artist – particularly of large-scale geometric abstractions that owe much to hos appreciation of geometric art in the Middle East. \nNaifeh\, whose family is of Arab origin though his parents were US diplomats\, grew up in the Middle East\, Africa\, and South Asia before pursuing art history at both Princeton and Harvard. His practice is closely tied to his family’s experience in the UAE and his exposure to Islamic art; Naifeh’s large works reference the glorious Middle Eastern geometric heritage\, while integrating the newer traditions of geometric abstraction of Europe and America from Kazimir Malevich to Sol Lewitt. The result is a body of work that is both physically imposing and intricately wrought. In both paintings and sculptures\, Naifeh takes specific precedents from millennium-old Islamic and Arab prototypes that were inspired by mathematical principles\, removes them from their temporal and material context\, and reimagines them in the world of twentieth-century international art. \nThe exhibition is organised under the patronage of HE Zaki Nusseibeh\, Cultural Advisor to the President of the UAE. \nTo 8 December. \nRight: Steven Naifeh\, Saida XIII (1998)

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Seulgi Kim: Ride the Wave
DESCRIPTION:Seulgi Kim’s first solo exhibition in the Middle East brings to Volery Gallery a deeply personal exploration of her emotional journey\,. The sea\, which plays a central role in her work\, becomes a metaphor for life’s turbulence and tranquillity; her depictions of crashing waves and steady rocks speak to resilience in the face of life’s challenges. And they feature her characteristic figures\, navigating the passage from childhood to adulthood\, boys and girls learning how to fit into their own individual adulthood – the innocence of youth is juxtaposed with the weight of adult responsibilities.

SUMMARY:Urban Market Festival
DESCRIPTION:Originally launched in Dubai in 2021 to promote sustainable thrift shopping\, this event arrives in Abu Dhabi with a makeover and what looks like a more commercial bent – the 40+ vendors do include thrift and vintage fashion\, but there’s also new streetwear\, accessories\, nail art and hair braiding\, and “homegrown brands” (maybe there isn’t enough upcyclable/recyclable stuff to go round) – and a specific festival vibe. There’s all-day music from top talents like DJ Beth Marie\, Ayesha Reid\, DJ LongLiveAce\, Olwyn Murray\, DJ Crown Prince and more – check the website for the schedule – and a few pop-up food stalls too. Opens 3pm to midnight on 8 and 9 November\, 3-9pm on 10 November.

SUMMARY:Meeting Mozart
DESCRIPTION:This acclaimed interactive experience for the young has been a major success for Sydney Opera House; it’s a 40-minute show aimed at children aged 2 to 10 (and their families) which blends live music\, storytelling\, and song to introduce young audiences to the world of classical music “in a fun\, participatory\, and inclusive environment”; Mozart\, his wife and a string quartet help the audience explore the instruments\, scores\, and themes that characterise his best known compositions. \nThe show has curriculum connections to Performing Arts\, Fine Arts\, Social Studies\, History & Culture and is reportedly great for Emotional Development. A free teacher’s resource pack provides classroom exercises and curriculum links. \nThere are performances on 8 and 9 November.

SUMMARY:Blackadder Goes Forth
DESCRIPTION:A stage adaptation of the fourth (and best-scripted) of the BBC sitcom originally written by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton. Dubai Drama Group really can’t go wrong with this – a series of schemes by Captain Edmund Blackadder to escape the horrors of World War One\, aided and impeded by his dimwitted yet endearing sidekick Baldrick\, the bumbling but lovable George\, and his nemesis Captain Darling. Should be laughs a-plenty\, right up to the tragic twist in the tale at the end … James Mitchinson directs and plays Flash; Blackadder is Matthew T Corbett\, Baldrick is Sadiq Saboowala. \nThere are performances at 8pm on 8 and 9 November.
