DESCRIPTION:An exhibition created by the Bulgarian immersive-experience specialists Poliforma\, using surround-sound and surround-visuals to celebrate “stories of people who have overcome\, adapted\, or ignored their limitations” through “captivating video inserts\, stunning 3D projections\, and four interactive installations”. Apparently it’s “a revolutionary digital art exhibition fully adapted for people with disabilities that celebrates resilience\, creativity\, and the ability to shape the world\, no matter the obstacles”. \nIt runs to 23 December. You book a one-hour slot; first available is 10am (1pm on Saturdays)\, last is 8pm (4pm Monday to Wednesday).

DESCRIPTION:This acclaimed interactive experience for the young has been a major success for Sydney Opera House; it’s a 40-minute show aimed at children aged 2 to 10 (and their families) which blends live music\, storytelling\, and song to introduce young audiences to the world of classical music “in a fun\, participatory\, and inclusive environment”; Mozart\, his wife and a string quartet help the audience explore the instruments\, scores\, and themes that characterise his best known compositions. \nThe show has curriculum connections to Performing Arts\, Fine Arts\, Social Studies – History & Culture and is reportedly great for Emotional Development. A free teacher’s resource pack provides classroom exercises and curriculum links. \nThere are performances at 11am\, 2pm and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday (2-3 November) and 9am and 11am on monday and tuesday (4-5 November); it moves on to Cultural Foundation Abu Dhabi for performances on 7-9 November.

SUMMARY:Taste the Waste: dir Valentin Thurn (2011)
DESCRIPTION:Valentin Thurn’s documentary shines a spotlight on the global scandal of food waste. Why do we throw away so much? On the way from the farm to the dinner table\, more than half the food we grow gets thrown away. European households throw away 100 billion Euros worth of food each year – as much as the annual turnover at Nestlé\, the world’s largest food corporation. The food people throw away in Europe would be enough to feed all the hungry people in the world twice over … So what can we do? How can we improve our behaviour? \nThurn seeks explanations: from supermarket sales staff and managers\, from bakers\, wholesale market inspectors\, welfare recipients\, ministers\, farmers and EU bureaucrats. We all have responsibility: the EU for instance sets restrictive guidelines for selling produce (apples must have a minimum size; potatoes must not be too big or too small)\, and customers’ tastes and preference are equally burdensome (who is happy to buy day-old bread? Why do we expect flawless fruit?). At least Thurn finds that some people do oppose this madness with imagination and commitment. \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. NAAS is a collaboration between a number of cultural institutions in the UAE: the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France in the United Arab Emirates\, the Embassy of Canada to the United Arab Emirates\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, the Embassy of Switzerland to the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain\, and Alliance Française Dubai. \nNAAS: Green Reel runs from 10 September to 26 November at Alliance Française Dubai.
