SUMMARY:Arda Aslanian: Obscured / Untold Stories
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition for the self-taught Armenian-Jordanian artist who uses her meticulously crafted works to explore the intricacies between visibility and concealment\, using drapery as a metaphor for the complexities of human experience. This series of works delves into the delicate boundaries that define our personal narratives that are often left untold. The gallery comments that “Aslanian’s use of a single-colour gradation technique increases the viewer’s confusion regarding the symbolism of the scene and imposes silence on us. Perhaps this is what she seeks: silence in a world full of noise.” \nTo 30 November. \nRight: Arda Aslanian\, Symphony (2024)

SUMMARY:Kes (dir Ken Loach\, 1969)
DESCRIPTION:Bullied at school and ignored and abused at home by his indifferent mother and older brother\, Billy is a 15-year-old working-class Yorkshire boy who discovers his own private means of fulfilment when he adopts a fledgling kestrel and proceeds to train it in the art of falconry. Loach’s compassionate treatment means the film is both a biting indictment of the British class system of the time but also a celebration of the power of relationships between humans and animals – and his kestrel has everything that Billy needs: freedom\, pride\, respect and independence. \nScreens with Ma Poule | My Girl (dir Caroline Ophélie\, France\, 2023: 18 min). Ever since the rooster died\, Jasper’s only surviving hen has been plagued by depression; forced to come down from the mountain where he lives far from the modern world\, the old man sets out in search of companionship for his beloved feathered friend. \nThis programme is part of the Al Sidr Environmental Film Festival\, a collaboration between NYUAD and Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi

SUMMARY:The Night Visitors (dir Michael Gitlin\, 2023)
DESCRIPTION:A movie about moths; film and video artist Michael Gitlin emphasises their surreal beauty as well as their ecological relevance. He’s interested in moths as organisms\, with fascinating life histories\, staggering biodiversity\, and a functional importance as indicators of climate change and habitat degradation; but he also sees moths as aesthetic beings and as carriers of meaning. \nScreens with Sleepless Birds (dir Tom Claudon and Dana Melaver\, Germany\, 2021: 45 min)\, a film that tracks the rise of artificially-lit\, industrial greenhouses in the French province of Brittany. The film shows the environmental impact of grow lights on biodiversity\, as well as on our own rhythms and perception of time. In examining the case of agricultural light pollution\, the film raises questions about the unintended consequences of human attempts to overpower nature and control the elements. \nAlso showing: The Bee Keeper’s Journey (The Climate Tribe\, 2024: 6 min)\, a short about beekeeper and ecologist Aisha Hareb Al Dhaheri\, whose passion for beekeeping raises awareness about the local ecosystem in the UAE. \nThis programme is part of the Al Sidr Environmental Film Festival\, a collaboration between NYUAD and Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi

SUMMARY:Sophie Ellis-Bextor
DESCRIPTION:The reinvented (and genuinely rejuvenated) pop sensation – Murder on the Dancefloor was a hit for her in 2001\, for heaven’s sake\n– drops in for one night only midway through an international tour that has seen sellouts around Europe and North America. Good news: Dubai Opera’s stalls area is to be transformed into a fully flat dancefloor. Should be good; she has some fine tunes\, a good band\, and masses of infectious energy. (The base price buys you a seat in the circle: the standing/aka dancing area is AED 370 per ticket.)

SUMMARY:The Ice Hole – A Cardboard Comedy
DESCRIPTION:This production debuted for four performances in May and two in July; all sold out (deservedly). It’s now back for a run at Theatre by QE2 on 26 and 27 October\, followed by one show on 17 November\, and it’s highly recommended. \nIt’s an English version of an award-winning French comedy from 2021\, Les Gros Patinent Bien\, by Pierre Guillois and Olivier Martin-Salvan. They reworked the original for an Anglophone audience at the Edinburgh Festival as The Ice Hole\, and there were rave reviews for a show that has an imposing Shakespearian actor telling incredible stories of a man journeying through Europe under the curse of a mermaid he’d absent-mindedly caught in a fjord. The actor is accompanied by a put-upon flunky (maybe a stage manager?) who strives with the help of hastily-scribbled cardboard signs and boxes to help us understand the meaning of this journey … \nIt’s fun\, mad as trumpets\, with echoes of Monty Python\, Laurel and Hardy\, and the Mighty Boosh. Matthew T Corbett directs Sadiq Saboowala and Patrick Albrecht\, two-time winners of the local Short+Sweet Dubai Theatre Festival\, for Complices Théâtre. \n
