SUMMARY:Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF)
DESCRIPTION:SIFF is back for its eleventh edition with an expanded official selection of 98 films (last year had just over 80) selected from 1\,834 submissions from 73 countries. Zimbabwe takes part for the first time; Palestine’s selection as Guest of Honor makes good sense\, given both consistent success of Palestinian films and the miserable situation in the country. Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi\, DG of the Festival noteds that “Palestinian cinema continues to deliver thought-provoking\, visually captivating works that reflect the pulse of Palestinian society”. \nThe Green Carpet platform\, a highlight of the festival\, will feature four premieres – Amakor\, a Kuwaiti comedy drama directed by Ahmed Al-Khodary; The Trainers\, an Italian film directed by Andrea Joplin; The Teacher\, directed by the British-Palestinian filmmaker Farah Nabulsi (reviewed as “riveting\, eye-opening … an intimate exploration of life in occupied Palestine” by The Hollywood Reporter); and Diplodocus\, an engaging animation about a little green dinosaur from the Polish filmmaker Wojtek Wawszczyk (above). \nThere’s a good selection of films in competition – 11 in the International Short Films category\, 17 Arabic shorts\, 14 animated shorts\, four animated features and a dozen live-action features\, 11 documentaries\, 19 in the student category\, and a cheery 10  for Films Made by Children and Young People. \nThe festival’s film market includes some practical workshops including a panel session on independent film distribution and another on the future of the Palestinian narrative in cinema. \n

SUMMARY:Alymamah Rashed: Mirrors from the Sidewalk
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of Alymamah Rashed’s latest work. A new series of large-scale watercolour and acrylic canvases\, it’s shaped by the belief that bodily connection to specific environments and elements can facilitate spiritual awakening. Rashed reflects on the immersion of the body in water\, soil and sky\, embracing floral elements and the everyday objects that she collects from the sidewalks of her hometown Kuwait. \nTo 10 November. \nRight: Alymamah Rashed\, I have fixed your roots in the soils of my earth to reach your 7 skies (for I am near your heart) (2024)

SUMMARY:torn
DESCRIPTION:Two more performances of this “sexy\, fast-paced\, brutal\, funny and at times moving dissection of post-millennium relationships … With echoes of Patrick Marber’s Closer\, torn is about the impossibility and possibility of love in a modern world where choices abound and nothing is forever”. Written and directed by award winning Australian writer/director Alex Broun\, assisted by Alexander Rondel\, torn is set in modern-day New York\, with four people in various stages of connection – lawyer Susan (Nadine Basiony) is in a relationship with advertising executive Cade (Osman Aboubakr: that’s them above)\, and Gerry (Basel Yafi)\, a voice-over artist\, is in love with Susan’s PA Daniella (Kethy Kist). \nIt will be performed at The Fridge in what’s termed “intimate mode” with the audience fully immersed in the action (“they will be so close that they can literally reach out and touch the actors … although we are hoping that they won’t!”).  Quite apart from the theatrical experience\, this means there will be only 70 seats available per performance – early booking is recommended. \nThere are performances at 5pm and 8pm\, with two final shows on 13 October.

SUMMARY:Seulgi Kim: Ride the Wave
DESCRIPTION:Seulgi Kim’s first solo exhibition in the Middle East brings to Volery Gallery a deeply personal exploration of her emotional journey\,. The sea\, which plays a central role in her work\, becomes a metaphor for life’s turbulence and tranquillity; her depictions of crashing waves and steady rocks speak to resilience in the face of life’s challenges. And they feature her characteristic figures\, navigating the passage from childhood to adulthood\, boys and girls learning how to fit into their own individual adulthood – the innocence of youth is juxtaposed with the weight of adult responsibilities. To 8 November. \nRight: Seulgi Kim\, Blue Dragon (2024)

SUMMARY:Creative Career Days
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s introduction to careers in the creative sector\, aimed primarily at school and college students\, is back. Under the (somewhat unwieldy) title Form = Function = Form = Function = Form\, the 2024 edition focus on design careers “and the ways in which the arts intersect with design\, architecture\, fashion\, graphics\, interiors and beyond”. \n“Attendees discover the disciplines of design thinking\, from collaborative and problem-solving approaches to the myriad opportunities that lie between the intersection of form and function” via stands run by potential employers and educators (over 30 UAE organisations and universities) plus hands-on workshops (craft-making\, but also CV-writing)\, panel discussions\, and a series of ‘Meet the Creative’ talks. And the valuable ‘career surgery stations’ are back\, offering one-to-one consultations with career experts suggesting tailored career mapping plans. \nThere will also be onsite food stalls\, music and entertainment “for all ages”. \nThis is the drop-in open-to-all day; it’s preceded on 10 and 11 October by two prebook-only days\, dedicated to group visits by school and universities and anyone with a student ID. Early registration is recommended via this link.

SUMMARY:Umm Kulthum & The Golden Era
DESCRIPTION:Saudi theatre producer Mona Khashoggi is bringing this acclaimed musical biography back to Dubai Opera after sell-out seasons in Saudi Arabia\, Jordan\, and Bahrain. For thousands of Arabs\, Umm Kulthum’s death in 1975 was particularly personal and shocking: “my family grieved as though we’d lost a family member\,” Khashoggi wrote. The show tells the life story of Umm Kulthum\, the most famous songstress of Egypt and the Arab world\, from the 1920s to the 1970s – culminating in a grand concert at the Olympia in Paris. \nThe role of Umm Kulthum will be performed by Syrian opera singer Lubana Al-Quntar\, and with a live orchestra we’re promised iconic songs from different eras of Umm Kulthum’s canon – including classics such as Ghanili\, Alf Laylah\, Serat el Hob and Hob Eyh. \nThere are further performances at 2pm and 8pm on 13 October.
