SUMMARY:Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF)
DESCRIPTION:SIFF is back for its eleventh edition with an expanded official selection of 98 films (last year had just over 80) selected from 1\,834 submissions from 73 countries. Zimbabwe takes part for the first time; Palestine’s selection as Guest of Honor makes good sense\, given both consistent success of Palestinian films and the miserable situation in the country. Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi\, DG of the Festival noteds that “Palestinian cinema continues to deliver thought-provoking\, visually captivating works that reflect the pulse of Palestinian society”. \nThe Green Carpet platform\, a highlight of the festival\, will feature four premieres – Amakor\, a Kuwaiti comedy drama directed by Ahmed Al-Khodary; The Trainers\, an Italian film directed by Andrea Joplin; The Teacher\, directed by the British-Palestinian filmmaker Farah Nabulsi (reviewed as “riveting\, eye-opening … an intimate exploration of life in occupied Palestine” by The Hollywood Reporter); and Diplodocus\, an engaging animation about a little green dinosaur from the Polish filmmaker Wojtek Wawszczyk (above). \nThere’s a good selection of films in competition – 11 in the International Short Films category\, 17 Arabic shorts\, 14 animated shorts\, four animated features and a dozen live-action features\, 11 documentaries\, 19 in the student category\, and a cheery 10  for Films Made by Children and Young People. \nThe festival’s film market includes some practical workshops including a panel session on independent film distribution and another on the future of the Palestinian narrative in cinema. \n

SUMMARY:Abdoulaye Konaté: Sambadio
DESCRIPTION:This solo show for the pioneering Malian artist Abdoulaye Konaté is inspired by the final track of Ali Farka Touré’s iconic 1976 album Le Jeune Chansonnier du Mali. The song Sambadio celebrates farmers with lyrics reflecting a father’s passionate plea for his son to honour the earth. In a similar vein\, Konaté’s latest works draw upon themes of Bedouin culture\, integrating motifs that pay tribute to their relationship with the land. \nKonaté creates large-scale textile-based installations using woven and dyed materials native to his homeland Mali. His abstract and figurative tableaux explore both aesthetic language and diverse socio-political and environmental issues; this show includes a new monumental work 9m wide. \nThis exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with contributing writers Simon Njami\, Ousseynou Wade and Professor Yacouba Konaté. \nTo 6 January. \nRight: Abdoulaye Konaté in front of Source de lumière (Soleil) Motif d’Arabie sur Fond Ocre (2024) \n

We all know what happens next\, but as private detective Martin Balsam and Marion’s sister (Vera Miles) search for Marion\, the horror and the suspense mount to a terrifying climax … Hitchcock’s film\, definitely one of his greatest movies\, has become a cultural phenomenon with its mix of suspense\, horror\, mystery\, black comedy; this is the original cut of the movie\, exactly as intended by the director.
