SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Mohamed Yousif and Maggie Otieno: Solace in Soil
DESCRIPTION:A duo exhibition for Emirati artist Mohamed Yousif and Kenyan sculptor Maggie Otieno that “celebrates the grounded connections between the practices of the two artists and the cross-cultural exchange between the Middle East and Africa”. Or as curator Shamma Al Mheiri puts it\, “Maggie Otieno and Dr Mohamed Yousif share leitmotifs of expressing generational sentiments and experiences through tangible expressions. Perhaps distinct in visual identities\, Otieno and Dr Yousif manifest connections deeper than the aesthetic portrayals in a state of continual solace …” The gallery is equally effusive: “This exhibition fosters a symbiotic exchange between the artists and their artistic practices\, intimately linked to their earthy foundations\, enabling their work to converse and showcase the interconnectedness between the regions”. \nMohamed Yousif is regarded as a pioneer of UAE sculpture and is one of the founders of the Emirates Fine Art Society. His 3D work is typically carefully crafted and delicate wooden sculptures\, many woven out of palm tree fronds handpicked in the UAE desert. He has featured in several exhibitions\, including The National Pavilion of the UAE at the 2015 and 2017 Venice Biennales. \nMaggie Otieno characteristically works with long abstract figures comprised of distressed railway sleepers\, originally from India and used to lay the ‘iron snake’ railway line in Kenya at the end of the 19th century – carrying within them stories of travellers\, labourers and communities. “Through her deft manipulation of form and texture\, she endeavours to imbue her sculptures with a sense of temporal continuity\, affording them a palpable resonance with the viewer’s own lived experiences”.

SUMMARY:Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF)
DESCRIPTION:SIFF is back for its eleventh edition with an expanded official selection of 98 films (last year had just over 80) selected from 1\,834 submissions from 73 countries. Zimbabwe takes part for the first time; Palestine’s selection as Guest of Honor makes good sense\, given both consistent success of Palestinian films and the miserable situation in the country. Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi\, DG of the Festival noteds that “Palestinian cinema continues to deliver thought-provoking\, visually captivating works that reflect the pulse of Palestinian society”. \nThe Green Carpet platform\, a highlight of the festival\, will feature four premieres – Amakor\, a Kuwaiti comedy drama directed by Ahmed Al-Khodary; The Trainers\, an Italian film directed by Andrea Joplin; The Teacher\, directed by the British-Palestinian filmmaker Farah Nabulsi (reviewed as “riveting\, eye-opening … an intimate exploration of life in occupied Palestine” by The Hollywood Reporter); and Diplodocus\, an engaging animation about a little green dinosaur from the Polish filmmaker Wojtek Wawszczyk (above). \nThere’s a good selection of films in competition – 11 in the International Short Films category\, 17 Arabic shorts\, 14 animated shorts\, four animated features and a dozen live-action features\, 11 documentaries\, 19 in the student category\, and a cheery 10  for Films Made by Children and Young People. \nThe festival’s film market includes some practical workshops including a panel session on independent film distribution and another on the future of the Palestinian narrative in cinema. \n

SUMMARY:The Wizard of Oz: dir Victor Fleming (1939)
DESCRIPTION:A newly restored version of the classic fantasy road-trip movie. The Guardian‘s summary says it all: “Victor Fleming has made … the most delightful film of its kind since Disney’s Snow White. The blend of old-fashioned\, classic storytelling with cutting-edge technology is undeniably enthralling. A work of almost staggering iconographic\, mythological\, creative and simple emotional meaning\, this is one vintage film that fully lives up to its classic status”. The sets might look a tad clunky to the modern eye\, but it’s easy to suspend rationality in the company of such warm\, affectionate storytelling with clever undercurrents of psychology and philosophy. Great performances\, too. Recommended\, and yet again a hat-tip to Cinema Space for booking this (free-to-view) classic.

SUMMARY:Porous Paradigms: Arab Art in Global Context
DESCRIPTION:Part of a series of events organised by Dubai Culture and Fiker Institute to “exchange expertise\, empower creative talent\, and support Dubai’s cultural and creative industries”. This one features a panel of Emirati artists and creatives\, including cultural researcher and writer Dr Khawla Al Marri; artist Zeinab Al Hashimi; and Shamma Yahya Al Mheiri\, Senior Officer of the Arts & Literature Sector at Dubai Culture. The moderator is Alia Al Shamsi\, author\, poet and Cultural Programming Manager at Louvre Abu Dhabi. The panellists will discuss “the fluidity and permeability of cultural expression\, exploring how Arab art operates within and beyond geographic\, historical\, and ideological frameworks” – based on the premise that cultural identities are constantly being reshaped by external influences. As the blurb puts it\, “Arab artists\, at the forefront of this transformation\, are recontextualising their heritage and making significant contributions to global artistic narratives”.
