SUMMARY:Candice Lin: Night Stone
DESCRIPTION:The LA-based artist’s first solo exhibition in West Asia. In Night Stone\, a large one-room installation\, Candice Lin uses ceramic sculptures\, textile works and a site-specific mural to connect the contemporary trade of manganese between Australia and China with the 18th-century commerce in sea cucumbers. Intrigued by the sea cucumbers’ unique digestive and respiratory systems\, Lin imagines and depicts their toxic encounter with manganese and the surprising bodily transformations that follow. \nThe exhibition was co-commissioned by the Biennale of Sydney and Monash University Museum of Art | MUMA in Melbourn. \nTo 12 January.

DESCRIPTION:Gjoen invites the viewer to explore the delicate balance between history and modernity\, as envisioned through a distinctive style that fuses street art influences with pop culture and fine art – symbols and themes from the Renaissance and Baroque are reimagined to challenge traditional views of beauty. That aesthetic isn’t too surprising; after studying fine art and fashion design\, Gjoen worked with Vivienne Westwood en route to a full-time commitment to art rather than fashion. DESCRIPTION:One of the most consistently funny of the Courtyard’s classic improv gigs is back after a couple of months’ hiatus: the speakers have to give a presentation on a slide deck they’ve never seen before\, with the topic determined at random by the Wheel of Destiny. Each presentation will be rated by a panel of judges and the winner applauded as the PowerPointless champion. Afterwards there’s a chance to mingle with the presenters and the Courtyard’s Corporate Team for mocktails (and a chance to find out more about the Courtyard’s Corporate Academy). \nIt’s free\, with donations welcome; but you need to put your name on the guestlist via the website. It’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n
