SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Timur D’Vatz: Arcadian Dreams
DESCRIPTION:A summer-long exhibition of work from one of the gallery’s stalwarts\, Timur D’Vatz\, featuring his signature mix of stylised figures and symbolic settings that owe something to mediaeval European tapestry\, something to Byzantine decoration. The title refers to the dawn of an early mythology\, located in a primeval forest\, manifested through magical flora and fantastic beasts; “there are starry skies and gleaming comets guiding both travellers and wild animals to the source of life\, which appears in the form of a Fountain or a Magical Flower. This is the focal point from where life and knowledge originate …”

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Always Growing
DESCRIPTION:Subtitled “look into the history of contemporary digital art in China” and curated by Jing She\, this exhibition features works from 10 artists or collectives from the contemporary digital art scene in China that showcase AI\, generative art\, 3D imaging\, gaming\, mixed reality\, somatosensory interaction\, computer programming composition and live coding. Says the blurb: “The use of technology in art creation goes beyond merely displaying technological prowess; the exhibited artists\, like Pao Ding in Chuang Tzu’s Essentials for Nourishing Life\, use technology to deeply explore and interpret the complexities of human society and culture\, finding new avenues for expression … These works aim to immerse the audience in an embodied experience that has no boundaries between virtuality and reality\, conveying distinctive Eastern aesthetics”. \nThe show also includes a presentation from the Research Center for Digital Humanities at Renmin University of China. \nThe artists: Baoyang Chen\, Dabeiyuzhou\, Fn Media Lab\, Zixuan Nian top)\, Raven Kwok (below)\, Uchan Sun\, Xiaolei Tian\, Changcun Wang\, Yicai Wang\, Mr. D. SUMMARY:I Wish To Be Happy\, I Want To Be Yellow
DESCRIPTION:A group show for an eclectic collection of artists — Mohammad Alfaraj\, Aminah Al huqail\, Dalia Baassiri\, Richi Bhatia\, Jumairy\, Tamara Kalo\, Adrian Pepe\, and Alia Zaal. The common factor is that they “cultivate a visceral and intimate relationship with nature” and “blur temporal boundaries between presence and absence\, fullness and lack\, past and present\, engaging in generative rites that foster creation\, fertility\, and renewal … Bodies morph\, adapt\, and redefine themselves\, existing in states of transition and transformation … They embody the power of attraction and interaction\, functioning as entities that react and interact with their surroundings”. \nFighting though the thickets of verbiage\, this looks like it could be a top show for the new season: the participants are all interesting\, provocative artists with something to say and novel ways of saying it. \nTo 28 October. \nRight: Richi Bhatia\, Assemblage Bed One (2014-24\, detail) Below: Tamara Kalo\, Olive Leaves Memories (2024)

SUMMARY:Mouza Al Hamrani: Homepage
DESCRIPTION:The first solo show by the Emirati illustrator and multimedia designer reflects the duality of the digital age — “celebrating the opportunities the internet has provided\, while also expressing the exhaustion and apprehension that come with a prolonged digital presence. \n“I aimed to capture this nuanced experience\, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationship with the digital world. It’s a portrait of my own experience of the internet in this region during my formative years\, all the way to the current day.” \nMouza Al Hamrani is one of only four UAE-based artists to be accepted for Tashkeel’s popular Critical Practice Programme last year and worked with a mentor to produce a series of artworks that blend of traditional illustration and cutting-edge digital artistry. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by artist-led tours and talks on 29 September and 13 October. \nTo 15 October. \n

SUMMARY:Rouge | Red Soil: dir Farid Bentoumi (2020)
DESCRIPTION:An occupational nurse in a chemical plant turns whistleblower over toxic discharges but has to balance fighting for the truth against the risk of alienating her entire family – many of whom work for the giant chemical works\, an ominous yet unavoidable presence that dominates their modest French town. \nThe result could be a goodies-vs-baddies thriller\, or (perhaps worse) a dogmatic dissertation on environmental advocacy; in fact it’s neither – yes\, there are (eco)thriller elements\, but the personal issues make it a rich study in real life. The whistleblower’s struggles for justice aren’t just with the company; she also has to face opposition from her father\, who has absolute faith in the corporation as a crucial job provider for the community. \nAs the review says\, it’s a “tense and timely thriller”. That’s helped in no small part by the quality of the acting (Zita Hanrot as the nurse\, Sami Bouajila as her father\, Céline Sallette as a committed journalist with a dark side). Also relevant: it’s based on a real incident (in Hungary\, as it happens\, but the same process is widely used around the world with the same dangers). \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. NAAS is a collaboration between a number of cultural institutions in the UAE: the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France in the United Arab Emirates\, the Embassy of Canada to the United Arab Emirates\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, the Embassy of Switzerland to the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain\, and Alliance Française Dubai. \nNAAS: Green Reel runs from 10 September to 26 November at Alliance Française Dubai. The screenings are all free and subtitled in English. \nUpcoming: (click the title for the link) \n24 September Ökozid | Ecocide dir Andres Veiel (2020)\n8 October Siccità | Dry dir Paolo Virzì (2022)\n22 October Animal dir Cyril Dion (2021)\n5 November Taste the Waste dir Valentin Thurn (2011)\n12 November More than Honey dir Markus Imhoof (2012)\n19 November Hadwin’s Judgement dir Sasha Snow (2015)\n26 November Dans la brume | Just a Breath Away dir Daniel Roby (2018)
