DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s annual handover of the arts centre to a selected cohort of young visionaries starts on Saturday 4 May and runs to Monday 27 May. There will be multiple artwork and installation “interventions” across the ground floor of the building\, both indoors and outdoors\, with a public programme of talks\, performances and more on the four weekends. \nThe Assembly is an annual experimental learning programme designed to foster creative leaders aged 18 to 24 in the UAE\, inviting the creation and curation of projects reflective of their generation’s areas of interest. This year’s learning programme was designed\, curated and facilitated by Abhirami Suresh\, Library and Youth Coordinator at Art Jameel\, in collaboration with Osemudiamen Ekore\, alumnus of The Assembly 2022-2023. DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition curated by Faridah Folawiyo\, showcasing artists of African origin across the world and examining how artists from Africa and the diaspora see the restrictive concepts of Eurocentric cultural superiority. The show aims to stretch audiences’ limits and perceptions\, inviting them to consider the elasticity and hybridity of influence and output. Folawiyo is a Nigerian curator with a background in Middle Eastern studies\, and she’s also interested in the historic dichotomy created by Orientalism and its interrogation by Edward Said. \nThe exhibited artists include: \nKesewa Aboah Ghanaian-British artist and model who uses her own body as a paintbrush\nKevin Claiborne New York-based conceptual artist whose work examines intersections of identity\, social environment and mental health within the Black American experience\nFadekemi Ogunsanya multidisciplinary artist from Nigeria who explores African culture\, blended with mythology and folk art\nEnam Gbewonyo British-Ghanaian textile and performance artist exploring womanhood and humanity while advocating the healing benefits of craft\nAmina Kadous Cairo-based artist whose work explores memory\, identity and the ephemerality of experience \nAlso being displayed at Efie Gallery are more than 70 vinyl record sleeves belonging to El Anatsui that offer a unique glimpse into the cultural inspirations which have shaped the career of one of Africa’s foremost contemporary artists. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Prior to his Arts Center show tomorrow\, the fiercely independent hip hop artist Oddisee will lead a talk in the NYUAD Gallery Reading Room that focuses on the DIY entrepreneurial approach to building his career – instead of pursuing record deals\, Oddisee has taken the less-travelled path from single-handedly writing\, recording\, producing\, and mixing his music to steering his marketing strategy and tour runs. In this presentation and audience Q&A\, Oddisee covers some of the essentials elements of this: building a brand\, identifying markets\, developing relationships with promoters\, and running a record label (he launched his own label OUTER NOTE in 2020).
