SUMMARY:Houda Bakkali: Digital Art\, Digital Culture
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition that aims to demonstrate the power of digital art to break spatial\, temporal and generational borders\, “creating synergies between different audiences and making art not only timeless\, but also universal\, close and understandable”. It features work by Bakkali alongside educational information about digital art\, creative process and the uses of art and new technologies. Says the artist: “Digital art is not a trend\, it is the present and the future. My art represents the need to tell stories through captivating and surprising environments\, in which the viewer can immerse themselves\, as is the case with augmented reality. It’s a way to experience a variety of sensations and emotions with my artwork. It also allows me to expand the story and give it life or several lives\, as many as I want. In addition\, it’s a way to create more fun and unique environments\, involving the viewer in the artwork and making it grow over time with new stories\, settings and characters. \nTo 31 July.

SUMMARY:All That Breathes: dir Shaunak Sen (2022)
DESCRIPTION:From their makeshift bird hospital in their tiny basement\, two brothers —  Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad – try to care for thousands of the black kites that struggle in New Delhi’s smog-choked skies. As environmental toxicity and civil unrest escalate\, this documentary shows how the relationship between this Muslim family and the neglected bird provides a poetic commentary on the city’s collapsing ecology and rising social tensions. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus calls the film “a poetic tribute to tenacity” that makes “a broader point about finding triumph within tragedy”. Hindi with English subtitles. \nThis film screens in the sixth edition of the Manarat’s CinemaMAS film festival\, curated this time by filmmaker and visual artist Scandar Copti – head of the Film and New Media program at NYU Abu Dhabi from 2014 to 2017. Currently\, he is still teaching filmmaking at NYUAD while working on an upcoming feature film. \nIndividual films on weekdays are AED 30 per head\, weekends are AED 50 per day\, and there’s an all-inclusive ticket at AED 150.

SUMMARY:Nezouh: dir Soudade Kaadan (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Fourteen-year-old Zeina lives with her mother and father in Damascus\, one of the few remaining families in a devastated neighbourhood. Covert visits from a local boy offer Zeina glimpses of freedom outside the oppressive control of her father – but her escape comes as much through her imagination as it does through her connection with the boy. Nezouh finds real poetry in the dust and wreckage of the city. Arabic with English subtitles. \nThis film screens in the sixth edition of the Manarat’s CinemaMAS film festival\, curated this time by filmmaker and visual artist Scandar Copti – head of the Film and New Media program at NYU Abu Dhabi from 2014 to 2017.
