SUMMARY:At the Edge of Land
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition\, curated by Lucas Morin\, highlights unexpectedly interconnected geographies\, resources and commodities\, moving between land and sea to tell stories of conflict\, erosion and extraction; it’s based on works from the Art Jameel Collection plus loans and new commissions by 18 international artists. It originated at Hayy Arts in Jeddah (where it ran November 2023 to April 2024) and the works presented trace the trade routes on which both Dubai and Jeddah are located – the busy maritime path connecting East Asia and Europe via the Gulf\, the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.  It’s accompanied by a film programme in Gallery 9 up to 18 August 18. To 29 September. \nThe artists: \nAbbas Akhavan\nRouzbeh Akhbari\nJananne Al-Ani\nTarek Al Ghoussein\nIosu Aramburu\nAu Sow Yee\nChihoi\nBady Dalloul\nAref El Rayess\nDaniele Genadry\nHo Rui An\nRanjit Kandalgaonkar\nLala Rukh\nHira Nabi\nFazal Rizvi\nSarker Protick\nSim Chi Yin\nJoar Songcuya\nYou Khin\nZarina

SUMMARY:No Bears: dir Jafar Panahi (2022)
DESCRIPTION:The jailed Iranian director Jafar Panahi plays a version of himself\, forced to shoot his new film in a village near the Turkish border whose inhabitants are encouraged to be scared of supposed “bears” roaming the countryside – just as the Iranian people are supposed to be afraid of their morality police … There’s a convoluted plot that mixes reality with the story being film\, but ultimately No Bears taps into an Iranian movie-making strategy based on the need to evade censorship with complexity and ambiguity in tackling contemporary political issues. Recommended. \nIn Turkish\, Persian\, and Azerbaijani with English subtitles. \nThis film screens in the sixth edition of the Manarat’s CinemaMAS film festival\, curated this time by filmmaker and visual artist Scandar Copti – head of the Film and New Media program at NYU Abu Dhabi from 2014 to 2017. Currently\, he is still teaching filmmaking at NYUAD while working on an upcoming feature film. \nIndividual films on weekdays are AED 30 per head\, weekends are AED 50 per day\, and there’s an all-inclusive ticket at AED 150.

SUMMARY:L'hôtel du libre-échange
DESCRIPTION:Classic Feydeau farce (actually co-written with Maurice Desvallières). It’s set in a notorious hotel\, with a motley group of guests entering and exiting rooms that are only sometimes the right ones … Lies and misunderstandings\, frustrations and lack of luck in love abound. Performed by students of Culture Emulsion’s Dubai-based drama school as part of its annual Tous en Scène festival of Francophone theatre. There’s a second performance on 24 May.

SUMMARY:The Burdened: dir Amr Gamal (2023)
DESCRIPTION:This drama\, Gamal’s second feature\, is based on a true story: Isra’a and Ahmed and their five children are engaged in a daily struggle against poverty in war-torn Yemen. When they discover that Isra’a is pregnant\, they scrape together the funds they think they will need to procure an abortion. But money proves to be the least of their worries as the bureaucratic labyrinth and the country’s strict social mores drive the family to the brink.
