SUMMARY:Library Circles: Azza Aboualam
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s Library Circles is a series of research\, talks\, and experimental interventions by UAE practitioners that offers alternative research methodologies with a focus on ‘thinking in public’. For this iteration\, Azza Aboualam – an Assistant Professor at Zayed University Dubai with an M.Arch from Yale – is displaying results of her investigations into the evolution of architectural typology within spiritual spaces in Sharjah and New York – notably\, how architectural form shapes spiritual practice\, with regional architectural elements. The project underscores the transcultural dialogue within the built environment\, offering insights into the employment of architectural forms and considerations in mosque spaces across these landscapes. \nTo 25 November.

But then they meet a highwayman … In Arabic with English subtitles. \nThis film screens in the sixth edition of the Manarat’s CinemaMAS film festival\, curated this time by filmmaker and visual artist Scandar Copti – head of the Film and New Media program at NYU Abu Dhabi from 2014 to 2017. SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fremont: dir Babak Jalali (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Beautiful but troubled\, 23-year-old Donya finds her promoted to writing the mantras inside fortune cookies because the wise owner of the factory believes that people with memories write beautifully. Donya\, an Afghan refugee with PTSD\, Donya already has memories aplenty – which may explain her insomnia\, the way she stares solemnly into space\, or the maturity that she possesses as a 23-year-old. It also means that\, as her boss predicts\, her fortune cookie messages pierce the hearts of strangers … This Jarmusch-like black-and-white comedy is a deadpan delight that eschews ostentatious set pieces and favours sombre reflection. It was a big hit at Sundance and SWSX last year. Recommended. \nThis film screens in the sixth edition of the Manarat’s CinemaMAS film festival\, curated this time by filmmaker and visual artist Scandar Copti – head of the Film and New Media program at NYU Abu Dhabi from 2014 to 2017. Currently\, he is still teaching filmmaking at NYUAD while working on an upcoming feature film. \nIndividual films on weekdays are AED 30 per head\, weekends are AED 50 per day\, and there’s an all-inclusive ticket at AED 150.
