SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:The 33rd ADIBF 2024 – which runs 29 April to 5 May at ADNEC under the slogan ‘Where the World’s Tales Unfold’ – will be showing 1\,350 publishers from 90 countries (12 of them represented for the first time)\, 375 local exhibitors (publishers\, distributors\, government entities)\, and more than 2\,000 associated activities covering various cultural and knowledge fields (including the third running of a series of debates modelled on the Oxford style\, the first examples of that in the Arab world). \nEgypt is the Guest of Honour this year for its “role as a beacon of knowledge\, culture\, and art that has influenced the cultures and knowledge of the masses with creative content across various fields”. The Fair also celebrates the first Arab author to win the Nobel Prize\, the late Naguib Mahfouz\, as the Focus Personality for this year – his best known novels\, Cairo Trilogy and Children of Gebelawi were banned in Egypt until recently. The Focus Personality programme includes critical readings\, lectures and seminars\, and a dedicated pavilion. \nAlso returning is a Professional Programme designed to support Arab and international publishers. This year’s edition will highlight the impact of AI on the publishing world and creative industries; there will also be a Copyright Exchange Forum\, the Abu Dhabi Fellowship Programme (Abu Dhabi Connect)\, and the New Opportunities Centre. The Fair will also adopt a new initiative to support digital technologies and statistics in the Arab world\, with a special focus on artificial intelligence\, offering advanced workshops to build Arab publishers’ skills in this field. \nNew this year is an Arabic Content Forum for Children and Adolescents\, a dedicated forum for photography as part of the Arts Corner titled ‘Image as Language’; a dedicated Cinema Corner with screenings and creative workshops; an Arabic Content Forum for Children and Adolescents; a dedicated forum for photography as part of the Arts Corner titled ‘Image as Language’\, and a popular book market named after the Al-Azbakiya Wall Book Market in Egypt. \nExtras for visitors include one free visit per person to the Qasr Al Hosn and Louvre Abu Dhabi museums\, discounts from audiobook publishers\, and savings of up to 25 percent on book prices. SUMMARY:Cirque Du Soleil: CRYSTAL
DESCRIPTION:The second weekend for “a truly breathtaking entertainment phenomenon”\, with Cirque du Soleil exploring brand-new creative territory by combining its signature acrobatics with ice-skating. So acrobats and skaters perform on the ice and in the air\, seamlessly combining disciplines from both genres as the ice is transformed into “a dynamic stage where precision skating mingles with awe-inspiring aerial feats and acrobatic prowess”. \nThe technology should be pretty spectacular too – state-of-the-art infrared trackers with 36 spotlights and 28 powerful projectors should create a visually stunning experience for the performers to move through. And no two performances will be exactly alike\, with the action unfolding dynamically around the skaters and acrobats. The soundtrack looks characteristically strong\, too\, with the likes of Sia’s Chandelier\, Sinner Man by Nina Simone\, and A Beautiful Day by U2. \nAs usual with Cirque du Soleil shows\, there’s a storyline – Crystal\, a young girl who feels misunderstood\, goes on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. DESCRIPTION:World Art Dubai is back for its tenth edition\, with more than 4\,000 artworks from 300+ galleries and individual artists who come from more than 60- different countries. WAD has grown out of its early days as a simple lo-fi affordable art fair into a bustling\, buzzy four days celebrating art in many of its manifestations. There will be lots of live art performances\, workshops\, street art and fashion\, talks and more alongside the commercial art. It’s still affordable (prices from $100\, we’re told); and since there’s no jury to oversee applications\, it’s likely to be variable in quality. But then that’s all part of the vibe … \nWAD is open 1pm to 9pm. As well as the single adult ticket at AED 25\, there’s reduced-price entry for kids aged 13-18 and family tickets at AED 55 (two adults one child) and AED 65 (two adults\, two children). DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s annual handover of the arts centre to a selected cohort of young visionaries starts on Saturday 4 May and runs to Monday 27 May. SUMMARY:The Ice Hole
DESCRIPTION:The final two performances for this hit comedy two-hander by Pierre Guillois and Olivier Martin-Salvan\, reworked from the French original for an Anglophone audience at last year’s Edinburgh Festival. There were rave reviews for a show that has an imposing Shakespearian actor telling incredible stories of a man journeying through Europe under the curse of a mermaid he’d absent-mindedly caught in a fjord. The actor is accompanied by a put-upon flunky (maybe a stage manager?) who strives with the help of hastily-scribbled cardboard signs and boxes to help us understand the meaning of this journey … \nIt’s fun\, mad as trumpets\, with echoes of Monty Python\, Laurel and Hardy\, and the Mighty Boosh; and it’s well worth an evening of your time. \nMatthew T Corbett directs Sadiq Saboowala and Patrick Albrecht for Complices Théâtre.
