The previews look great\, and the watery additions do add to the circus skills on show. Thierry Antonios\, founder and Managing Partner at Cirque Du Liban\, described Fontana as “a perfect blend of creativity and strategic partnership\, enhancing the vibrant cultural tapestry of Abu Dhabi … we are excited to share this extraordinary experience with the audiences of Yas Island”. \nIt all happens in a purpose-built big top circus tent near twofour54. There are shows from 7 April to 26 May.

SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:The 33rd ADIBF 2024 – which runs 29 April to 5 May at ADNEC under the slogan ‘Where the World’s Tales Unfold’ – will be showing 1\,350 publishers from 90 countries (12 of them represented for the first time)\, 375 local exhibitors (publishers\, distributors\, government entities)\, and more than 2\,000 associated activities covering various cultural and knowledge fields (including the third running of a series of debates modelled on the Oxford style\, the first examples of that in the Arab world). \nEgypt is the Guest of Honour this year for its “role as a beacon of knowledge\, culture\, and art that has influenced the cultures and knowledge of the masses with creative content across various fields”. The Fair also celebrates the first Arab author to win the Nobel Prize\, the late Naguib Mahfouz\, as the Focus Personality for this year – his best known novels\, Cairo Trilogy and Children of Gebelawi were banned in Egypt until recently. The Focus Personality programme includes critical readings\, lectures and seminars\, and a dedicated pavilion. \nAlso returning is a Professional Programme designed to support Arab and international publishers. This year’s edition will highlight the impact of AI on the publishing world and creative industries; there will also be a Copyright Exchange Forum\, the Abu Dhabi Fellowship Programme (Abu Dhabi Connect)\, and the New Opportunities Centre. The Fair will also adopt a new initiative to support digital technologies and statistics in the Arab world\, with a special focus on artificial intelligence\, offering advanced workshops to build Arab publishers’ skills in this field. \nNew this year is an Arabic Content Forum for Children and Adolescents\, a dedicated forum for photography as part of the Arts Corner titled ‘Image as Language’; a dedicated Cinema Corner with screenings and creative workshops; an Arabic Content Forum for Children and Adolescents; a dedicated forum for photography as part of the Arts Corner titled ‘Image as Language’\, and a popular book market named after the Al-Azbakiya Wall Book Market in Egypt. \nExtras for visitors include one free visit per person to the Qasr Al Hosn and Louvre Abu Dhabi museums\, discounts from audiobook publishers\, and savings of up to 25 percent on book prices. DESCRIPTION:A summer-long exhibition of work from one of the gallery’s stalwarts\, Timur D’Vatz\, featuring his signature mix of stylised figures and symbolic settings that owe something to mediaeval European tapestry\, something to Byzantine decoration. The title refers to the dawn of an early mythology\, located in a primeval forest\, manifested through magical flora and fantastic beasts; “there are starry skies and gleaming comets guiding both travellers and wild animals to the source of life\, which appears in the form of a Fountain or a Magical Flower. This is the focal point from where life and knowledge originate …” To 10 September.

SUMMARY:Mr Brainwash
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the French-born LA-based street artist who started filming graffiti art and subsequently became an artist in his own right after an off-hand suggestion from Banksy. As it happens\, many of the 10 works on show here are reworkings of Banksy originals (there is a persistant rumour that Mr Brainwash was/is Banksy’s alter ego\, or possible vice versa: but Mr Brainwash’s artistic evolution was mapped in Banksy’s 2010 documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop\, and Banksy has confirmed that Mr Brainwash is indeed real and a friend). Mr Brainswash has also deployed other iconic images in his paintings\, notably from Warhol and Haring. The resulting blend of Pop Art and Street Art he describes as his own form of “graffiti hybrid”. SUMMARY:Sharjah Animation Conference
DESCRIPTION:“We bring together animation enthusiasts\, professionals\, and children to celebrate the art and craft of animation.” This second edition of the conference actually offers a rich programme of workshops\, talks\, screenings\, and exhibitions which seem most suited to the industry; it’s organised by Sharjah Book Authority in partnership with Italy’s Bergamo Animation Days (BAD) and features a roster of heavy speakers from the industry – lots of Europeans\, predictably enough\, but also a good representation from the Arab world. \nHighlights include a Masterclass by artist and director Junichi Hayama\, celebrated for his work on titles like Fist of the North Star; an exhibition from stop-motion specialists Aardman Animation that promises an in-depth look at the studio’s innovative techniques and storytelling prowess\, and a special 30th anniversary screening of The Lion King\, with a presentation from top Disney animator Andreas Deja. \nOne day tickets are AED 280\, the four-day pass is AED 400 (but there were heavy discounts when we last checked). Those prices just buy admission to the event; if you want to attend a workshop\, you’ll pay extra – AED 350 per workshop (and no discounts that we could see). The workshops look particularly good\, an hour long and generally on very practical topics like animating facial expressions and using Storyboard Pro; there are around two dozen of them over the last three days (day one is just the exhibition plus a concert of iconic game soundtracks from the Florence Pops Orchestra).

DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed Egyptian theatre-maker Ahmed El Attar adapts and directs an Arabic version of Duncan Macmillan’s powerful\, poignant play – an hour of life and humour about mental health. As her mother battles chronic depression\, the child creates a list of every thing they can think of that makes life worth living; as the child grows\, so does the list. \nThe play features Syrian actress Nanda Mohammad\, alone on an empty stage with only a minimal set\, accessories\, and music. She has the challenging task of balancing the storyline with the energies of the audience\, who are invited to participate and even improvise during the show. \nThe play is performed in Arabic with simultaneous English translation. There are further performances on 2 and 3 May.

DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that.
